Introduction One of the most legendary puzzle games ever made. Ghost Trick is a game that pretty much does everything right, from gameplay, story, music, art, etc. Originally released on the DS and then ported to IOS, this steam port will act as the definitive version of the game for generations to come. As someone who has played all 3, I can safely say that the game has well been preserved, and even slightly improved with this version. Ghost "Ghost" is the player's primary method of movement and communication in the game. When the "ghost" button is pressed time will be stopped and the world will be covered in a red infrared like overlay. In this state the player takes the form of a blue flame and objects will appear to have blue markers on them called "cores". The player can move within a very limited range to other cores to posses the object they're attached to. Ghost can also be used as a way to engage in conversations with certain characters by connecting to a core of a living person. The player can freely move in and out of the ghost world whenever they choose by pressing the ghost button, but leaving the ghost world will cause time to flow again. This brings us to our second mechanic. Trick Once the player has possessed an object in the ghost world they'll be able to manipulate it in the real world by pressing the "Trick" button. Each object has a unique trick interaction that can effect the world in a variety of ways, such as grabbing a person's attention, creating pathways, or even interacting with other objects to achieve new effects. Knowing when and where to use a trick is vitally important since time flows when you use them. Some objects have a one time use, and other objects have to be used at the right time. While this seems highly stressful, rest assured that the game is very forgiving to players who mess up. In fact messing up is almost mandatory due to the game's final mechanic. 4 Minutes Before Death & Saving Lives When the player possesses the body of a recently deceased person they'll be able to travel back in time 4 minutes before their death. It's here that the player's skill with using their "ghost tricks" is put to the test. The player will be forced to watch the last moments of someone's life play out, where they'll be allowed to understand the circumstances behind their demise. Afterward the clock will be rewound again and the player will have a chance to change their fate. These sections require keen environmental observation and experimentation, as the cause of death will be understood, but HOW to avoid it won't be. This creates a lead for the player to follow as they move around possessing objects and manipulating them to change the circumstances that lead to the initial death. The player is allowed to rewind time as much as they want, and once they've changed a person's fate sufficiently, a checkpoint will be created to allow the player to restart from that point until the person's life is saved. As the game progresses, these environmental puzzles become increasingly more complex. As some puzzles will require multiple fate changes of different people to complete . Story, Art, & Music Story - Ghost Trick stands as one of the best examples of storytelling in video games, not just because it has one the most well crafted narratives ever conceived, but because it's gameplay loop is absolutely crucial for the story to even work at all. The player is an amnesiac ghost who learns about the different characters and their experiences by saving their lives. This creates a tension and resolution that actually feels earned because it's up to player to make sure that these characters have a future, not the script. On top of that, the characters are also just lovable and charming. The game strikes this masterful balance between comedic and tragic that few stories get right. The plot is obviously the highlight of this experience though, and while I won't spoil anything, it is EXTREMELY good. Needless to say you should experience it yourself. Art - Ghost Trick has a very unique art style that can only be described as "colorful noir". 2D artwork is highly stylized and places heavy emphasis on silhouettes, while the in-game sprites are all hand animated 3D models. Originally these models where converted into 2D to fit DS's hardware limitations, but here you can really see what the original vision for the models were and it looks fantastic. The backgrounds and environments are all incredibly detailed and diverse, but the most interesting visual element of the game are the spotlights. The game will often use them to highlight key moments or characters during certain scenes, and this gives the game a theatrical element that not many other games have. Music - By far the most divisive part of this remaster, the music of the original ghost trick was extremely memorable and well composed and here they opted to do an entire rearrangement of the whole OST. While I'm normally not a fan of such endeavors, this game has forced me to rethink my outlook because they did a phenomenal job. Some songs that play in key moments are elevated immensely by the new arrangements and by the end I actually ended up preferring the remastered OST. The game also allows you to listen to the original versions as well, so the old music isn't completely lost. Closing Thoughts Ghost Trick is a timeless masterpiece that succeeds in every area that a game should. It is the single best example of how to properly integrate a narrative into a video game. It doesn't dismiss the player as irrelevant to the game's events, and in fact, often puts the lives of its ensemble cast directly into their hands. It's confident that its writing will speak for itself, and doesn't let the insecurity of the player possibly missing a detail detract from the core gameplay loop. It was, and still is, revolutionary for its time, with a focus on fighting circumstances rather than people. It is the greatest game ever made, go play it.

Was curious if the ending will make me almost cry again after 10+ years since the first playthrough. It did.

If anyone would ask me what my favorite Ace Attorney game is, I'd laugh, and show them Ghost Trick instead. (And then whisper Trials and Tribulations under my breath) Ghost Trick is a wonderful and focussed experience with only a few puzzles that are kinda bad.

Ghost Trick is a short-but-sweet puzzle game with the same director as Ace Attorney. Originally made for the DS in 2010, the vibes and catchy music are all still here in this remaster. The story is pretty solid, with mysteries that genuinely had me excited to keep playing and see the plot unravel. The best part is that all your questions will be answered by the end of the story. I wasn't the most keen on the ending but it was still a great experience throughout. I would definitely recommend this if you like puzzle games or Ace Attorney. Even if you don't play many puzzles, this is a complete experience that you can pickup and feel satisfied from with very little commitment.

just play it. play it blind. don't look at anything about it. if you like ace attorney you'll probably like this. if you like tightly written mystery plots with expertly deployed twists, you'll like this. if you like the idea of only being able to interact with the game world through setting up massive rube goldberg machines, you'll like this. it's clever, it's funny, and i can't tell you anything about it. play ghost trick
