Honestly not even sure what the point of reviewing a delisted game is but I had fun with it. It looks surprisingly good for its age and it feels good to control. In general I think the earlier events and cars are more fun than some of the later ones, because a lot of these gimmicky race formats that you have to run don't do it for me. It's also a little weird on the collision physics, which is most noticeable when you are behind someone slower than you; you don't push them forward at all, they just slow you down and stick rigidly to their line. Which also explains why it's so disproportionately easy for the AI to wreck you compared to how hard it is to wreck them. There's also an issue of flashbacks just not working sometimes? There's no pattern to it, it'll work in one turn and not work the next, you'll lose it in race 2/5 of a final and get it back on race 3, you can sit still for a second after getting put in the wall and it might finally work just long enough so you can rewind and watch yourself getting dommed by Bruno Silva again and again.

Welcome to WSR. GRID 2 is the successor to the original hit from Codemasters, packed with (almost) everything you would expect from a sequel to a great racing game. As expected in this genre, there are plenty factors which carry less weight (e.g. story, voice acting) and thus require little focus or mention, but others which require much more detail. As one would expect from a Codemasters game, the presentation is polished and follows the now familiar template of menus and transitions. Time has proven this to be a winning formula: if you have played any of their recent titles, you know what to expect. It is still a fabulous looking game so many years after its release and has stood the test of time well; the attention to detail is especially apparent in the cars and the lighting, both in terms of world and particularly reflections. As one might also expect for an older game on (generally) newer hardware, performance is great and the game runs buttery smooth on what is considered average equipment today. The career mode sees you recruited to World Series Racing as the poster child to help grow the sport by gaining fans all over the globe. In reality however, it is a thin cover story to keep you racing (not that one is needed) and something you largely ignore. Your globetrotting takes you through America, Europe and Asia (Hong Kong) and through a variety of different disciplines in your quest to win enough fans. During this tour, you will also compete in different events: face-off, touge, regular races, checkpoints etc., each varied enough to keep you engaged. While accessibility to cars is not an issue in career (most are made available to you easily and frequently), there is no customisability beyond paint jobs and sponsor decals. You would think travelling with a mechanic/engineer would mean some kind of tuning or perhaps performance upgrades, but that is conspicuously absent here. The core mechanics are good however; GRID 2 does a great job of conveying a sense of speed and teetering on the edge of control, no matter the car or location. The other major innovation in career is the liveroute concept: some tracks/races are procedurally generated as you drive and thus the next corner may not be the one you remember or expect. While it can be a bit disconcerting at first, it does a good job of keeping you involved and on your toes. Add outstanding sound design into the mix, both in terms of engine sounds and how the engine noise interacts with or bounces off the environment, and you have a good basic recipe to work with. GRID 2 does seem to suffer from a bit of an identity crisis though; not so much in terms of what it wants to be, but how it wants to achieve it. This is clearly more arcade-like than simulation, but it is not fully arcade either. While it may excel in presentation, there are some other areas which are lacking. There is no interior view, and while this may be less of an issue in a more arcade-like title, it still feels like a glaring omission. Apparently the decision was made not to dedicate development time to this after a survey revealed it was only used by roughly 5% of players; while the logic is hard to fault, it still feels a bit stingy. The other aspect which is simultaneously pleasing and frustrating is the handling model. While not realistic and clearly designed to appeal to the target audience, it feels unintuitive as well. The handling is very "drifty" and has a clear bias towards oversteer, which by itself is not a problem. I found it difficult to gauge when the car was in balance and when it was about to spin; for normal races this is merely annoying but for drift events it is a problem and thus I struggled with that aspect. The multiplayer mode, as mentioned above, is completely separate from the career, i.e. no shared resources (money) or cars. Curiously, this is also the only area in which you can apply upgrades to your cars (strangely missing in career mode). Multiplayer has various safety ratings (i.e. how likely your opponents are to ram into you) as well as performance tiers based on the cars; it is enjoyable enough but largely due to the chaos and unpredictability introduced by human opponents. If you are looking to get all the DLC for the game (no longer available for purchase), you can follow the below guide (all credit to OP): https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2559171716 Further improvements and tweaks can be found on the PCGamingWiki page located at https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/GRID_2 . GRID 2 may lack depth and real longevity, but it is an entertaining ride while it lasts and well worth a look - as long as you don't expect anything too serious. My only major gripe with this game is with the flashback functionality: there were too many times where it simply would not work, which is incredibly frustrating. Either have it work properly, or take it out. Obviously, this concern will disappear if you turn flashbacks off. Played on Windows 11 Pro x64 without any issues.

GRID 2 builds upon the solid foundation laid by its predecessor to deliver an adrenaline-fueled racing experience that caters to both casual players and racing enthusiasts. Developed by Codemasters, the game pushes the boundaries of arcade-style racing with a strong emphasis on immersive visuals, tight driving mechanics, and a diverse roster of vehicles and tracks. Unlike ultra-simulative racers, GRID 2 strikes a careful balance between realism and accessibility, ensuring that players can dive into high-speed thrills without needing to master complex controls, while still rewarding skill and precision. From the moment you hit the track, GRID 2 impresses with its stunning graphics and dynamic environments. The game features a wide variety of locations, ranging from the neon-lit streets of Miami and Paris to the rugged off-road trails of Morocco and the coastal roads of California. Each track is meticulously crafted, with attention to detail that brings the racing circuits to life — reflections shimmer on wet asphalt, crowds react to your moves, and dynamic weather conditions add layers of challenge and visual flair. The sense of speed is palpable, amplified by carefully tuned camera angles and motion blur effects that immerse you in every turn and collision. The core driving mechanics are where GRID 2 really shines. Cars handle responsively, offering a sense of weight and momentum that makes each vehicle feel unique. Whether you’re piloting a sleek supercar or a rally-bred off-roader, the controls provide a satisfying blend of precision and accessibility. The game’s focus on clean racing is emphasized through its handling model, which encourages players to maintain control and avoid reckless collisions. A notable addition is the “TrueFeel” handling system, designed to balance authenticity with arcade-style fun, making the game approachable without sacrificing depth for those who want to master each car’s nuances. Variety is a cornerstone of GRID 2’s appeal. The game boasts a diverse roster of cars that span multiple racing disciplines, including touring cars, street racers, muscle cars, and rally vehicles. Each class offers a distinct driving experience and strategic considerations, compelling players to adapt their driving style accordingly. The racing modes also provide ample variety, from traditional circuit and sprint races to drift challenges and knockout events. This breadth ensures that gameplay stays fresh and engaging over long play sessions, catering to different tastes and skill levels. Multiplayer is a robust component of GRID 2, extending its longevity beyond the single-player campaign. Online races pit you against real opponents worldwide, where precision driving and tactical aggression become paramount. The matchmaking system generally works well to create balanced races, and the inclusion of split-screen multiplayer supports local competitive play, a welcome feature in an era increasingly dominated by online-only experiences. The social aspect is further enhanced by leaderboards, time trials, and community challenges, fostering a competitive yet enjoyable atmosphere. The career mode offers a structured progression system where players compete in a series of events to earn sponsorships, unlock new cars, and upgrade their garage. The narrative framing is minimal but effective, focusing on the rise of a professional racer and the pursuit of motorsport glory. While not overly complex or story-driven, the career mode provides sufficient motivation to keep pushing forward, with a steady ramp-up in difficulty and increasingly challenging AI opponents that test your growing skills. Sound design and music play important roles in GRID 2, contributing to the overall immersion. Engine noises are crisp and varied, with each car producing distinct revs and exhaust notes that add to the visceral thrill of racing. The soundtrack combines energetic tracks that complement the pace of the races without overpowering the gameplay. Additionally, ambient sounds like tire screeches, collisions, and environmental effects are finely tuned to heighten the sensory experience without becoming distracting. However, GRID 2 is not without its criticisms. Some players have noted that the AI can occasionally behave unpredictably, either too aggressive or overly cautious, leading to inconsistent race experiences. While the TrueFeel handling is generally well-received, purists looking for a hardcore simulation might find the driving model somewhat simplified. Additionally, the game’s focus on arcade-style racing means it lacks some of the deeper mechanical customization options found in more simulation-focused titles, which may disappoint those who crave intricate tuning and vehicle adjustments. In conclusion, GRID 2 is a thrilling and polished racing game that successfully balances accessibility with enough depth to satisfy a broad audience. Its gorgeous environments, tight driving mechanics, and diverse content make it an engaging experience that keeps players coming back for more high-octane action. While not the most hardcore sim on the market, it carves out a niche for itself by delivering fun, fast-paced racing that is easy to pick up but rewarding to master. Whether you’re a casual gamer looking for exciting races or a more dedicated driver seeking varied challenges, GRID 2 offers a compelling package that stands strong in the racing genre. Rating: 8/10
