Riding the coattails of Alien: Isolation, I needed something I could actually relax with. GYLT was a smaller title I'd heard about roughly a year ago on a list of underappreciated gems, and the trailer was intriguing enough that I picked it up during the Steam summer sale. What I got was a compact little adventure-horror-puzzle game — an odd but effective blend of Alan Wake, Little Nightmares, and the 2004 Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events tie-in, which I hadn't thought about in twenty years. I wouldn't quite call this family friendly, or at least not without a caveat — it works best for older kids playing alongside an adult. The story tackles some fairly serious questions and subject matter, especially if you read the found materials scattered throughout. Don't let the cartoonish aesthetic fool you; the game opens with a disclaimer about its content for good reason. After finishing, I went back through to piece the timeline together and make sure I'd read the subject matter correctly. The gameplay and puzzles aren't especially difficult, even for a casual player. They're straightforward as long as you're paying attention, which I'd actually commend Tequila Works for — accessible without feeling condescending. Where it stumbles is balance. Certain weapons trivialize enemies and deflate what should be tense encounters. Leaning toward stunning enemies rather than outright killing them would have preserved the tension better. That said, the enemy designs themselves are varied and creative, sitting in a space that almost teeters into Tim Burton territory. Overall it's a thoughtful game punching above its weight, and at $8 on sale the short runtime is easy to justify. In a saturated market it manages to stand on its own with its own spin on mechanics and storytelling. Other reviews tell the same story — Overwhelmingly Positive, and I can see exactly why. 86/100
This Game needs to be used in Schools for Education... The Gameplay itself is nothing special. Its not hard, its nothing new. It has some Bugs and Crashes. And some Achievements are just... why... The Graphics are nicely done. The Horror Aspect is soft and not really scary. But what the Game does is talking about one of the Biggest Problems of Kids in School... BULLYING!!! Every Page i read from Emily and every Comment Sally made feels so Authentic. It says Things most Victims only think about and only comes out when its too late. And i know what im talking about cause i have been a Bully-Victim for Years... I hope some Teachers out there play this and use this Game as Educational Material for Bullys and Victims.
GYLT is a survival horror game developed by Tequila Works that explores themes of bullying and childhood trauma through a "delicate psychological horror" lens. Are you ready for this? Gamers will play as Sally, or I'd rather say guiding her throughout the game. She is a young girl searching for her missing cousin, Emily, in the fictional mining town of Bethelwood, Maine. After being chased by local bullies, Sally is transported to a twisted, nightmarish version of her town where her fears and memories manifest as real. Silent Hill déjà vu, anyone? The narrative heavily focuses on the emotional impact of bullying and how inaction or guilt can shape a person's world. The game emphasizes stealth. Carefully sneaking past enemies rather than direct confrontation. You can use environmental distractions, like throwing soda cans, to lure monsters away. And similar to Alan Wake, Sally's primary "weapon" is a flashlight. It can be used to stun enemies or hit glowing weak spots to defeat them. This game will also sharpen up your smart brain to solve linear environmental puzzles and find collectibles like diaries that flesh out the lore. What I love the most from GYLT? It has multiple endings! There are three different endings based on your choices and how many collectibles (like caged canaries or stone figures) you recover. Originally released in 2019 as the first Google Stadia exclusive, the game eventually went multiplatform following Stadia's shutdown. This game is still available on Steam, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One & Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch by the time I wrote and post this review. As of March 2026, there have been reports of the game being delisted from certain digital storefronts like the PlayStation Store. So better buy it while it's still around and purchasable, before it's permanently gone. GYLT has quickly become a standout in my library. It’s a masterfully crafted psychological horror game that balances a creepy, Tim Burton-esque atmosphere with a deeply moving story about bullying. If you’re looking for a game that is as emotional as it is eerie, this is a must-have for your collection! +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ I hate bullies. From the playground to the boardroom, bullying remains the weapon of the weak. It’s a cowardly attempt to bankrupted someone else’s self-worth just to feel 'rich' for a moment. But let’s call it what it is: the lowest form of loser behavior. There is no glory in a fight where only one side is throwing punches; there is only the pathetic shadow of a small person trying to look tall. Don't let a coward rewrite your worth. The scars they leave are proof that you survived their worst, but they don't get to own your future. You are more powerful than the fear they sell.
Fully enjoyed this game, very beginner friendly when it comes to combat, puzzles and cozy horror in general. Loved the Silent Hill esque environment, the story reminded me of the horror movies Mara and The Babadook, where mental health struggles manifest themselves into an entity and attempt to swallow us whole. Would love a sequel.
