I don't play many games anymore, but I'm glad I picked this one up on sale. It's a really simple game, but it does everything right: - Good level design - Good enemy variety - Lots of different boss fights - Lots of unlockable classes and skills, - Great progression system that made me want to keep re-playing it with different classes and trying new builds to accomplish the prophecies - It's difficult enough to keep me entertained but easy enough for my old man brain to still beat - RNG is somewhat manageable through unlocks that give you rerolls/banishments The game isn't finished yet but it's genuinely a great buy anyway, imo.

Heretical is a very solid little ARPG that has the promise of becoming great if the devs stick to it. It has just enough depth and variety to keep players coming back run after run, hoping to discover more fun unlockables. Those who tried the demo should be aware that it creates a false impression of a much more shallow game. It does not properly showcase the core mechanics and might make you wonder if those rare stars are even helpful. It's an easy game to drop early on, because it starts off very barebones, giving you only the most typical characters, items, and skills. But if you decide to give it a little more time, Heretical quickly flourishes into something much better within a few runs. The Prophecies mechanic (achieve certain in-game feats to permanently unlock new skills, equipment, characters, and bonuses) begins to shine as the intended way for your characters to grow; the Star Well (limited direct stat upgrades) also becomes useful for fine-tuning your build further. The map is very nicely done, with interesting layouts that allow you to choose the order of your trials for subsequent runs if you manage to open the corresponding shortcuts. These shortcuts, by the way, are abundant. The skills are varied, featuring some tried-and-true ones (like ricocheting projectiles or chain lightning) alongside a healthy dose of clever and deadly additions that feel fresh. Moreover, the game is well-balanced overall. It offers generous amounts of skills and loot while still allowing your character to feel powerful without making the combat too easy. There are still some unimplemented features Heretical would benefit from. My main issue was with the early-game progression. During the first few runs, when your characters lack enough skills/slots to create any half-decent build, you find yourself stuck clearing the same area over and over again. As well designed as it is, it gets stale. Then, suddenly, your skill pool expands exponentially, and the rest of the game can be cleared surprisingly quickly. This bottleneck could be addressed by making the beginner area somewhat wider, offering different directions to explore (and perhaps some more bosses, too) while progressing through the earlier Prophecies. Of course, being in early access, Heretical has some occasionally annoying bugs, like archers on the upper level of the sewers being visible while you are on the lower level. All in all, this is a good effort. I hope to see Heretical completed and developed into the gem of a game it has the potential to be.

If Diablo and Dark Souls had a baby sprinkled with some roguelite elements on top, it would be this game. With an engaging gameplay loop and a promising EA, the game has a lot of potential. I can't wait to see what the developers are cooking up next.

a good game. Has some dark souls 1 atmospheric vibe where you dance around different parts of medieval fortified settlement. The game is isometric hack and slash where you do a run, unlock stuff, die, respawn and push a littlebit further on your next run. Its a roguelite where your progress is tracked with "prophesies". Prophesies are like steam achievements.. do a thing, kill a thing or do a thing X number of times to unlock a new thing, be it a new weapon, a character, a spell, a shortcut, a skill slot etc. During a run you defeat enemies to gain levels. Levels you use to activate skills (shoot fireball when you hit, cast a tornado every X meters you run.. and so forth). You also obtain gold to use on vendors and loot which you can equip or recycle if its worse than what you wear currently. You become stronger but since you are defeating enemies the game keeps count of enemies you slay and eventually game becomes more difficult. Each run gets harder every ~40+ enemies you dispatch and once you do, you gain a special resource which you can use on a ritual on one of certain few spots on the map to give yourself a considerable boost in something, be it damage, range, resistances.. etc. With aforementioned buffs comes detriments, one which is permanent until you use a resource received only from bosses to cleanse yourself, and another one which goes away after X amount of enemies slain or if you pay a price of health or gold. You push forward, try to unlock as much as you can before you inevitably perish.. and start a new run. Sometimes you can find weird star shards which allow you to permanently improve yourself in a leveling skill tree kind of system except they are not levels and you are free to allocate and re-allocate those points however you want. All of this works well together and create very entertaining game. Its a mix of exploration, gauntlet run and roguelite elements.

What can I say... an absolutely amazing game where no two runs are ever the same. This game made me fall in love with the genre. The prophecies add a whole new layer of depth and purpose to the gameplay. While you can always aim for a win, the prophecies give you an additional goal, letting you accomplish something that could help you in future runs. Kudos to the developers and their community for listening to feedback since the early demo-beta days. Wishing all the best to the team!
