Neutral Rating. 65 good, 35 thumbs down. Pros: --Souls-like feel is pretty good. Very moody but kind of its own vibe. hard to explain. -- As an old-school gamer I love my isometric games, so its a little bit new and little old. I don't mind the castle aspect and not having a true open world (we'll talk about that). -- Gameplay is most definitely easy to play, hard to master. There isn't anything all that complex to the mechanics its click to attack, dodge (you will alot), block (you will f this up alot), and to heal potion/flask (I misclick this alot on controller). --Most of the rest is finding your preferred combo of stuff and scratches a very nice character modding itch without intense complexity. (hello dragon's breath with fast wand and shield offhand). -- You will fear the rat...I hate rats... -- Value. The game is cheap for the hours of play (and fustration) I have gotten from it. Middle/Neutral -- Doesn't hold your hand at all, which is good...it doesn't treat you like an idot. -- I feel like an idot. For the longest time I had no idea which way to go or what to do. -- I still only have moderate Idea where I need to go but no idea how far from the end I am. -- I've absolutely lost the plot, if there was one in the first place. I just know that all those open short cuts I got done don't really matter. Cons -- You will die....alot and the ongoing unlocks can very tough to proc as you go on (think I got like only 60% of them?) While challenging at first this has become annoying. -- Most unlocks are just chances to drop equipment rather say perm Xp, HP or stat increases. -- Skill is great, but luck goes a lot further. Immediately before this review, I barely got any good upgrades and got slagged by a huge rat rush near the sewer entrance, sucked ass. Next run I found like 3 heal pot upgrades immediately after the bridge but nothing in the way of beyond basic equips. -- Hello darkness my old friend, I have died. Right back to the near the beginning and restart. IDK if there is check point or not beyond squidy and first bridge (hello 141 attempt). -- Blocking with a shield is rough. it is precision timed rather than just hold and hope. All great in a souls-like where you can see telegraphed moves. But in isometric you will need to zoom in to see many enemies distances, or listen very carefully for some audio procs. --...which is terrible when getting mobbed outside your FOV or being bombed by the bomber/caster/archer you proc. 5 minutes ago from what feels like from a mile. God the after aggro distance and time in this game might one the roughest I have ever seen. Biggest Cons. -- There should be someway to get bonus XP or something after a restart if you have unlocked short cut A or B. Tried being sneaky (no stealth mechanics at all) and got to a boss I'm pretty sure I need to defeat at low level...Your not locked in here with me! I'm locked in here with you! . So best option is to do old areas for quite a few levels before moving on. Grind grind...for what feels like nothing. -- The iso camera is fixed and cannot rotate, and there are many many points where there is no f'n way to see what is happening. While it will auto rotate sometimes (cue: look for door, ladder, stairs, or ledge), trying to precision dodge or block when the steeple is blocking what is happening sucks. -- I've gotten stuck multiple times on things that I couldn't see. Dodge...and dead. -- Rebinding the controller buttons in game is busted. I have no idea how it works TBH. clicking than click new button often set the wrong function to the wrong button. Use the steam controller rebinds (which isn't great either but way better).

I don't play many games anymore, but I'm glad I picked this one up on sale. It's a really simple game, but it does everything right: - Good level design - Good enemy variety - Lots of different boss fights - Lots of unlockable classes and skills, - Great progression system that made me want to keep re-playing it with different classes and trying new builds to accomplish the prophecies - It's difficult enough to keep me entertained but easy enough for my old man brain to still beat - RNG is somewhat manageable through unlocks that give you rerolls/banishments The game isn't finished yet but it's genuinely a great buy anyway, imo.

Absolutely love this game!!! Controls are tight, progression is great, atmosphere is perfect, good variance in builds and upgrades, really good difficulty levels. Definately needs more content and I can't wait for the next update!!! Two minor bugs: 1. The Steam Cloud Saves don't seem to be quite working properly. I started playing on my primary computer, everything was fine. I installed the game on my laptop, everything was fine. I went back to my original computer and the save was a few runs behind the last save on my laptop. I immediately closed the game down without starting the run and went back to my laptop. The saves had reverted to the last save on my primary computer, overwriting the saves on my laptop. 2. Not a bug, but I would love to see more info on the compendium relating to stats, strengths, weaknesses, etc... Overall, I love the game, it has quickly become a favorite!!! Can't wait for the next update!!!

Heretical is a very solid little ARPG that has the promise of becoming great if the devs stick to it. It has just enough depth and variety to keep players coming back run after run, hoping to discover more fun unlockables. Those who tried the demo should be aware that it creates a false impression of a much more shallow game. It does not properly showcase the core mechanics and might make you wonder if those rare stars are even helpful. It's an easy game to drop early on, because it starts off very barebones, giving you only the most typical characters, items, and skills. But if you decide to give it a little more time, Heretical quickly flourishes into something much better within a few runs. The Prophecies mechanic (achieve certain in-game feats to permanently unlock new skills, equipment, characters, and bonuses) begins to shine as the intended way for your characters to grow; the Star Well (limited direct stat upgrades) also becomes useful for fine-tuning your build further. The map is very nicely done, with interesting layouts that allow you to choose the order of your trials for subsequent runs if you manage to open the corresponding shortcuts. These shortcuts, by the way, are abundant. The skills are varied, featuring some tried-and-true ones (like ricocheting projectiles or chain lightning) alongside a healthy dose of clever and deadly additions that feel fresh. Moreover, the game is well-balanced overall. It offers generous amounts of skills and loot while still allowing your character to feel powerful without making the combat too easy. There are still some unimplemented features Heretical would benefit from. My main issue was with the early-game progression. During the first few runs, when your characters lack enough skills/slots to create any half-decent build, you find yourself stuck clearing the same area over and over again. As well designed as it is, it gets stale. Then, suddenly, your skill pool expands exponentially, and the rest of the game can be cleared surprisingly quickly. This bottleneck could be addressed by making the beginner area somewhat wider, offering different directions to explore (and perhaps some more bosses, too) while progressing through the earlier Prophecies. Of course, being in early access, Heretical has some occasionally annoying bugs, like archers on the upper level of the sewers being visible while you are on the lower level. All in all, this is a good effort. I hope to see Heretical completed and developed into the gem of a game it has the potential to be.

Great but it desperately needs more content. I "finished" the game in about 90 minutes and I am not good at these things
