So I replayed this to experience the DLC for the first time as it had been several years since my first go at the base game (just realized I never reviewed it). I had genuinely forgotten how much depth there was to this game. Not that I thought it was bad or anything, but in my memories I thought it was a shallower experience more focused on a fun romp than it was, but replaying it again it goes to some pretty great places and it was neat getting to experience it again. Note: So you don't mess up like me. If you're the kind of person that likes to make a whole bunch of different saves at different points to re-experience certain scenes - make sure to overwrite your old saves. I didn't and there was one scene I wanted to save, but saw it was already there and didn't, and it turns out they're no longer compatible, so bummer.

Overall, a very pleasant experience and cute story. Had a thorough roughly 4 hrs enjoying it to it's completion. I think the biggest downside for me, is just that relatively short game. I understand making a longer game would mean more development, and considering it's about 4 hours of fully voice acted characters (not the inner dialogue), it isn't too bad. It does mean that a lot of the character building had to be crammed into 4 hours of story, which definitely lead to some things feeling a little rushed or confusing. In particular, it kind of felt like there were some weird "anime logic" moments, or moments that just really wouldn't make sense assuming this was a real setting. I would've loved a lot more a deep dive into Amber's background, and a lot more exploration of her past and communicating with Marina and character growth instead of what did end up feeling pretty forced for an ending / conflict resolution. All of which is to say, it wasn't a bad experience, just noting it could've felt a lot more real. A different VN I've seen that really knocks a sense of realism in terms of how the characters talk and react to each other and such is Class of '09. Not to say this game by comparison doesn't do a decent enough job, I think a lot of the dialogue over all is actually quite great! I really do think it just suffers from the fact it's such a short story. I think maybe double the length of time would've allowed it to be less rushed in terms of all the story beats and such. Definitely not a perfect, but I'd still recommend anyone looking for a nice fairly lighthearted though definitely some serious elements in particular with themes of grieving and loss. It actually left me wanting that explored way more. Still do need to actually purchase the DLC though as of this review.

Great visual novel, great characters, personalities, and interactions. Best of all, it's really cute. I'd totally watch an anime adaptation about this.

I really love Highway Blossoms. It’s a such a special game that set off the founding of my favorite VN studio. They polished this game into a gem and have made so many fantastic games since. I recommend them all, but Highway Blossoms is the perfect starting point

For an earnest and queer title, it's nice that it allows itself to be perhaps a little bit exaggerated, hokey, and frankly problematic in the same way that straight galge have gotten away with for ages instead of forcing itself to be perfectly ideal and soft. Something of a "popcorn read", but there ain't nothing wrong with that.
