wholesome story :3 dlc 10 years later with animation so much better it makes the base game feel dated kinda. (would kinda like the base game with extra animations now) dlcs timeline is weird anywhere from one month to a year after the main story after the main story ends and it jumps ahead without saying anything it feels like.
Compared to some of my previous reviews this one is going to be a lot shorter. Not because the game is bad, I recommend it, but because it's a very different game to those. This is a review for the base game alone, and not the DLC content of Next Exit (of which I have not played). Please be aware that there will be spoilers beyond this point. The art direction is very good, especially the background (though I do still mostly like the character designs). A few specific scenes definitely stand out, and those are nearly always the most impactful scenes (normally a kiss frankly). This is definitely a good usage of resources, as the art is all good but particularly focusing on those moments gives them an extra boost than just the emotional factor. The main character, Amber Golley, is a pretty typical lesbian character. A bit of a tomboy, a little standoffish and cynical, she has a soft spot for a pretty girl (in this case Marina). She's very weighed down by the grief she has for her recently deceased grandfather. This sets up an interesting dynamic of keeping a lot of feelings to herself, even away from her soon to be partner, and then having them explode out of her without notice. It sets up a lot of the tension in the series, where she's not willing to trust Marina even though Marina trusts her. Marina Hyde, the love interest, is not really a character with a lot of depth. She definitely isn't a bad character for that, she's definitely airheaded and cute. She has a lot of joy and enthusiasm for the things around here, and definitely insecurities about the fact she's sheltered. I don't want to say that she's not smart, but she's definitely an "ignorance is bliss" type of character. Mariah Pastorius is an alcoholic who hates everybody around her, is abrasive, accusatory, and generally unpleasant. She's not got many redeeming features, but she does clearly put aside her dislike for Amber at a key moment of the story to do the right thing (though uh, by nearly causing multiple deaths and car crashes). There's not much there other than vitriol and alcoholism, aside from that scene. Joseph Nowell is a wallflower, keeps Mariah in check when he can, and generally just seems decently unaffected by everything around him. He clearly cares little about the treasure, which is revealed to be buried by his great great grandfather, and is mostly there to make sure Mariah doesn't end up getting her and Tess killed. Tess Pastorius is potentially my favourite character outside of Amber. While she seems standoffish as well it comes across as more of a coping mechanism for dealing with her sister Mariah. She has a clear love for culture, for sights, and for Americana generally. The little details around her colouring with Marina make you realise this is just a kid, along with her enthusiasm and legitimate skill around some crafts and photography. She's definitely the best member of the secondary trio. The game does have a couple pitfalls in my opinion. The nasty things that Amber did to Marina near the end are mostly glossed over in favour of a "true love wins" type story, Amber's grief with her grandfather is not particularly discussed between the two of them, and there isn't really just character growth for anybody outside of Amber. The story itself is mostly superficial, though it does a decent job at dealing with the all encompassing feeling of grief, and that does make it seem very much a story for those looking for a mostly "feel good" experience. I did, however, come into this game directly after playing the Chinese VN Sweet Home which... is very much not a feel good experience. I think the game could've done with a little bit more reckoning with the problems Amber caused, and was going through, rather than a dramatic classical "stop the car and cry/kiss through the problem" romance fix. I personally would have enjoyed the game more with some multiple endings/multiple choice options like most other VNs but I wont levy that as a criticism of the game as it's very clearly not meant to be that kind of VN.
I've read my share of visual novels over the past couple decades, probably around 25-30 of them. Some good, some alright, a few not great. I'm ashamed to say that I usually don't expect much from "Western" titles because there's just something about Japanese writing that really does it for me, emotionally speaking, that Western writers have a hard time matching. I'm also generally not a fan of English voice-overs. But that just made Highway Blossoms a sweet surprise! This is definitely the best visual novel I've read in the past few years, and probably ranks in my top five overall. I guess it helps that Highway Blossoms scratches a lot of my itches: I've always been plagued by acute wanderlust so I have a thing for "road trip" stories, as well as good music -- and Highway Blossoms has both! The treasure-hunting plot is fun and kind of nostalgic, although the sweet romance between the main characters is what really got me hooked. The artwork is really well-done IMO; a few scenes literally took my breath away, they were so beautiful. I've lived in Utah for most of my life and yet somehow never managed to visit the gorgeous parks to the south -- a regret that this game really makes me want to fix. And the music! Just wow. There's this one track that I've been absolutely obsessed with for the past few days now: "Eleven" by Smoke Thief. Somehow this song manages to stir up so many mixed emotions in me, it's kind of amazing; I don't think I've been more in love with a VN soundtrack since I first played KIRA☆KIRA like 15 years ago! I first played through an older version of Highway Blossoms before the Remaster added voice-overs, and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the VAs in this game. The voices made the many emotional moments so much more poignant. While I'm not LGBTQ+, I've always considered myself an ally, and the romance between the main characters is so sweet. Amber's character is compelling to me because she reminds me of myself: too often stoic and stubborn, a cynic if not downright grumpy. Marina's bubbly characterization is the perfect counterpoint to Amber and just makes them so great as a couple, especially due to Marina's inexperience at the beginning. But it was Tess that really struck a chord in me, especially the way the Next Exit DLC expands upon her character, because my own depression started at that same age and nobody noticed it in my case either. Her flat affect and eccentricity reminded me way too much of myself. The way this game explores but doesn't feel the need to "fix" real-world problems like depression and alcoholism is probably my favorite thing about it. It's so real, while still maintaining that wonderful fictional quality. In short, I'd highly recommend this game to any visual novel fan, especially if you like road trips, picturesque American Southwest scenery, wonderful emotive music, and of course a sweet romance.
So I replayed this to experience the DLC for the first time as it had been several years since my first go at the base game (just realized I never reviewed it). I had genuinely forgotten how much depth there was to this game. Not that I thought it was bad or anything, but in my memories I thought it was a shallower experience more focused on a fun romp than it was, but replaying it again it goes to some pretty great places and it was neat getting to experience it again. Note: So you don't mess up like me. If you're the kind of person that likes to make a whole bunch of different saves at different points to re-experience certain scenes - make sure to overwrite your old saves. I didn't and there was one scene I wanted to save, but saw it was already there and didn't, and it turns out they're no longer compatible, so bummer.
