A huge step up from the original, with larger maps and more freedom to approach objectives your way. The stealth can feel a bit clunky by modern standards, but there's a certain charm to learning enemy patterns and pulling off a perfect assassination. Some missions are frustrating, yet the atmosphere and classic Hitman sandbox design still hold up surprisingly well.
FIrsty, this game is awesome, at its worth the potential extra work to get this running on Windows 11. Okay, in my first review, I gave this a bad rating, since it didnt work on Windows 11 right now of the box. I tried things like compatibility mode and such, but the game wouldnt even run, after I was even able to find the game folder. But, I was able to fix this by editing a config file. Ive seen similar fixes on Google, including downloading a replacement DX8 DLL, but I dont really want to download a potential virous right now (although, the DX8 github replacement MAY be a safe and viable option). The following are steps to remedy ths issue: 1.) Open file explorer 2.) Navigate to folder and edit config file at location: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Hitman 2 Silent Assassin\Hitman2.ini" a.) *IMPORTANT* Make sure to backup original .ini file somewhere that you can find it again if needed 3.) Find this line near the top of the .ini file: "DrawDll RenderD3D.dll" 4.) Change to "DrawDll RenderOpenGL.dll" (Without quotes) 5.) Save and Run game This is all that I had to do. Graphics settings didnt matter on my machine, compatibility mode didnt work, running as administrator is dangerous. Just alter that single line in the .ini file and you should be good. It IS possible the game will render better with DX8 instead of OpenGL? I havent tried that yet; I just wanted to play the game and I dont want to risk downloading things.
Initially, I was very frustrated with this game, as much as I enjoyed the more recent Hitman games. But, once I beat the first few missions, I realized how well designed and thoughtful this game is. It is an incredibly difficult game, especially on my chosen difficulty (Expert). It requires extreme patience from the player in order to avoid suspicion from trigger-happy guards. Essentially, everyone is an enforcer. So, you need to walk like you belong where you are and turn your face away when you pass a patrol. These little details do an incredible job at making you feel like a real spy deep behind enemy lines. The soundtrack adds to the tension and is definitely one of my favorites. In addition, you can watch all NPC movements on your map, something that isn't possible in the other Hitman games I've played. I learned how powerful this can be and it allows you to devise a master plan and execute it. In effect, I leave every mission feeling like I executed it the same way that 47 would have. I highly recommend you give this game a fair shot if you want true satisfaction out of playing a game.
