I think this has become the Hitman game that's officially settled my interest in the series. A gritty, gripping atmosphere and soundtrack, nearly all of the levels being immersive and enjoyable experiences and just overall a very fair and understandable experience that still maintains difficulty. While I'm less of a fan of the Traid missions, Traditions Of The Trade, Beldingford Manor and Meat Party are fantastic displays that all play amazingly, with the former bringing C47's best level to a proper standard. Very glad I returned to and committed to this one, only excited to try out Blood Money and Hitman 2 (Silent Assassin)
For the longest while now, I have considered this to be my favorite Hitman game of all time, though I never finished it up until now. Thus far, in my Hitman "journey" as it were, I would say that that statement still holds up, maybe even more so upon finishing it, even despite the perception it has in the wider Hitman community. The presentation is the most unique in the series, featuring constant rain/snow and an overall darker mood which fits in-line with the scenario surrounding 47. Which, on that note... The cutscenes and their presentations are my favorite in the series, again, due to just how unique and intriguing they are, presenting many questions as to what's real or otherwise. Gameplay overall has only been slightly improved over the last game, ironing out a few irritations for a smoother experience... We're one game away from a more "perfected" experience, but here I'm very glad to say we've reached a very solid point. And now, we must talk about the biggest point of critique: the fact that half of this game is made up of remade levels from Codename 47. I do actually respect what they went for here, as not only do these missions work well within the context of the rest of the game, but also because, at the time, a majority of Silent Assassin players had never experienced the first game due to it being a PC exclusive. And additionally, I found myself really liking some of these remade levels, as some of them expanded upon the original in interesting ways. The problem, however, should be obvious, with half of the game being a remake, some have seen this as “cheap”, some may feel like it loses it’s own identity this way, I find myself very much in that camp. I still very much love this title, quite a bit actually, but unfortunately, considering the reputation that has spawned from the second half, Contracts more so gets tossed around as a “replacement” for Codename 47, which I find both frustrating and downright sad. As a whole, if a given original title is widely available, then you shouldn’t immediately disregard it for a remake. Contracts is a wonderful time, and I do hope that if you end up playing it, you’ll share my views.
I think about this games atmosphere a lot. so cold and uncomfortable. the cutscenes are all so dreamlike. the ui and sound design is minimlistic but has this edge to it. and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the soundtrack is so eery to compliment it and goes so hard. this game also gets bonus points for being the first game in the series to actually have non-broken enemy ai! congrats devs only took you 3 games. because of this tho the game is a lot easier than the previous ones so consider turning up the difficulty. the levels are all great. most are remakes of the first game and are all improved and imo render the first game effectively obsolete. the new additions are all awesome too. i still think beldingford manor is the best in the series! in terms of graphics too i think it still looks fantastic. character faces are very expressive and animations, expecially in cutscenes, are phenomenal. and every level has so much contrast to the color palette, rain pouring down, fog and haze, dark moody skyboxes. its so good the new games may be more polished but hitman has definitely been missing this priority of atmosphere and "weirdness" in it's aesthetic that makes these older game so memorable. for the price it's definitely worth picking up if you want a simple solid stealth/shooter game, and to see a part of the weird and cool history of this series. note - Steam currently says non supported on steamos/deck but I've been playing on deck fine, just had to add 2 lines to the ini file to fix broken input. check protondb to see examples
I'm gonna say something controversial, but this is the best hitman game in my opinion. The dark aesthetics is amazing in this game and they managed to capture that very essence. Blood money is another amazing game but contracts for me holds the first place, then blood money, then absolution.
