I’m not a review writer, however, Twisted Tower nailed the pricing. At $15 brand new, the price sets the expectations, and I tend to be less critical. It was a no-brainer, so I bought it. It was even on sale, saved a dollar fifty. Good game. Imagine this vibe: remember when we had older game consoles, and you had your classic favorites, but you also had those filler games? You remember them fondly despite them not being perfect. You know the game has flaws, but you still like it. That’s what I think of this. It doesn't have many flaws, but it has a few big ones. It feels exactly like a long-lost Xbox 360 game I’m replaying. The environmental art is great, and that’s what made me play the whole thing. Smashing cameras, pumpkins, and enemies feels satisfying. If anything, this game attempts to max out on environmental vibe and game feel, seemingly at the expense of enemy combat and story. Regarding enemy combat: I’ve watched Thomas Brush’s YouTube channel on indie game dev, so I expected a bit more thought put into the actual combat mechanics. This game relies heavily on cheap kills. In games like Half-Life, BioShock, or even Cyberpunk, you might enter an overwhelming room, but you can spot explosive barrels or find a height advantage. You think about how to approach combat and strategize what weapons you will you and why. That’s great gameplay, you make decisions and sometimes restart a sequence just to execute the perfect play. Here, enemies spawn in waves, and they love to spawn right behind you. You walk into a room and get sniped in the back, forcing you to replay another 5-15 minutes just because of a cheap death. It's like old-school NES cruelty, enemies spawn in your blind spots and shoot you dead before you can even react. I was expecting the story to go all-out bonkers. I thought it would reveal that you are a psycho killer having a psychotic episode inside a normal hotel, you went postal, and because you fear clowns, then you become a clown. The monster thinking they're the hero, the hero fantasy getting undone. A real twist, kind of like the reverse of the Little Sisters gameplay from BioShock 2. But here... it’s just some dude proposing to his sister. The story is just okay. So, what do I rate this? It's worth skipping lunch and bringing something from home to eat at work so you can buy and play it, assuming you are completely out of games to play because you already beat the best ones. It’s not going to be your favorite, but it won’t be your least favorite either. I rate this above a casual restaurant meal, but less than BioShock 2. You figure out what that means to you.

While I’m on an hiatus from writing reviews… this at least deserves a quick “hell yeah” recommendation from me! I popped in to just check it out, and got sucked in for over three hours. Before bed, of all times, and now my heart is racing too much to fall asleep. >.> I’ve completed the Hotel floor of the tower, and am maybe halfway through the Mermaid floor. I think if you’re really taking your time, you could probably get about ten hours out of a single playthrough, as I think there are five sprawling floors to explore, plus the lobby, which contains its own challenges, and some secret areas. There are three difficulty levels though, so there is plenty of replayability, as the game notes explain that the tower labyrinth changes a little on each playthrough. The setting here is incredibly immersive. I feel TRAPPED in this fun house. I’ve seen the Bioshock-vibe comparisons, and yeah, if you’re nostalgic for that off-kilter 1950’s decopunk aesthetic, you’ll love this. The voice acting is excellent. The music complements the unsettling vibes, and I’ve noticed it subtly changing when I enter spaces. The exploration is a lot of fun, with small rewards around every corner, and new mechanics that emerge (such as swimming during the Mermaid floor). You get to play with a variety of weapons (and at least one tool I’ve so far unlocked) that are drip-fed to you. My go-to has been just wailing on everyone with my upgraded mallet. But I’m becoming fond of the guns, and better at switching amongst them during combat. The enemies are all well-designed, with their own attack abilities, and great at providing the jump scares to get your cardio workout in for the night. :) And it’s not just jump-scares. There’s an actual story you’re slowly uncovering as you explore the tower, with bits of lore (letters, newspaper articles), which enriches the whole experience. And someone to rescue, so you have a sense of purpose! I was cozy-gaming a bit of Elden Ring before checking out Twisted Tower tonight. And while I have a combined 250+ hours in Elden Ring across various platforms … let’s just say that I’m playing Twisted Tower on Fairytale difficulty (easiest) and died a comparable number of times to my brief time revisiting Elden Ring tonight. XD Twisted Tower isn’t for the faint of heart! Probably I just suck though, tbh. I was cursing alone in my dark room during one scenario (“Where is that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clown with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ machine gun?! Die you ♥♥♥♥—ahhhh nooooo—♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥...”) that was anything but fairytale-like, as I was being clobbered by waves of enemies in a gigantic multi-level room, spinning and running in circles, trying to locate from where the creepy voices were coming before they found me first. I eventually cheesed it by hiding in a single corner and smashing them all to bits as they walked into my “trap.” Work smarter, not harder y’all!! :) There are a few timed challenges that are hair-pulling, such as cranking open a door in another room that then slowly shuts again while you frantically try to backtrack through some winding rooms and traps before it closes. I may also have run into a timed grappling challenge of a similar nature before closing the game a bit ago. If you are easily frustrated by this sort of thing, just beware! I wonder if the timed puzzle elements like that could benefit from a patch that extends lengths of time in Fairytale mode, as the timer seems set right down to the wire in my opinion. “Getting good” with blasting through enemies is fun, I think. But I can’t personally say the same for repeating the timed find-your-way-here-quickly challenges. That said, I think I’ve only run into a couple of these that gave me the “ugh” factor. I’m playing in a handheld (Lenovo Legion Go with SteamOS) and it’s flawless. I have all graphics on ultra, though my Legion is the Z1 Extreme Chip model, and that chip does a lot of heavy lifting. If you’re on Deck, the dev created a default Deck graphics setting, which is a nice touch. Highly recommended for Spooky Season, for anyone who already has FPS experience, for people who love jump scares, and for everyone who appreciates this mid-century funhouse aesthetic. It’s an extremely well-crafted game by a solo dev (mind-blowing) at a steal of a price. I could see this as being an annual Halloween tradition for people, to make their way through the Twisted Tower each Spooky Season. Especially if the dev is able to create paid dlc that adds more floors!

It starts to run out of steam a bit towards the end, but it's pretty good, and has an interesting alternate route system to encourage at least one replay. Reminds me of Turok 3's alternate level paths a bit.

I have mixed feelings, but overall I am more on the positive side than the negative. The gunplay is really good, which is really important. The sound is generally good and the setting is interesting, but the game feels like a good base/prototype for a much larger production. Twisted Tower was made mostly by one person and you can feel that - the environment is repetitive, enemy pathing is lacking, and there is a little environmental storytelling. BioShock Inspiration was mention by author multiple times but feels more like a boomer shooter. If you expect some kind of immersive sim experience, you will be disappointed.

I played the demo of Twisted Tower and liked it, so now that the full game has been released, I started playing it today. I am still early in the game, but so far I am enjoying it. This might sound strange to some people, but parts of it remind me of BioShock. Not because it copies it, but because of the atmosphere. The music, environmental clues, strange footage playing in the background, and the way you enter an unfamiliar place and slowly try to understand where you are all give me that familiar feeling. The enemies are an interesting choice. Personally, I wish they were a little less goofy and that the game had a more serious and brutal tone, but they can still catch you off guard when you least expect it. Searching for hidden areas, finding ways into locked places, watching out for traps, and slowly moving deeper into the game all add to the experience. Even traveling between areas creates tension. I have only just started the released game, so these are my early impressions, but I am definitely interested in continuing and seeing where it goes. If you plan to leave a comment, be kind.
