Much like this game’s predecessor Life is Strange: Double Exposure , Life is Strange: Reunion is a bit of a mixed bag. For every positive aspect of the game, there’s also a negative aspect dragging the experience down. Positive 1. Chloe returns. She’s a bit older, a bit wiser, but still recognizable as Chloe, for the most part. 2. Max is Max. She leads with her heart, not with her head. And she bears the weight of the world upon her shoulders. 3. The few times Max and Chloe get to exist together feels good. Yes, I said “few times.” See the next section. 4. The core idea behind how Chloe and Arcadia Bay can now co-exist with each other is sound enough. That first conversation Max and Chloe have where they realize what’s going on was emotional. 5. The music is decent. There are one or two songs that standout, and none seemed out of place or distracting. 6. The game looks good. Not great, but the quality of the characters and environments carries over from the last game. Occasional moments of pop-in or textures taking an extra second or two to load, but it was fairly minimal. Negative 1. Chloe feels a bit too subdued in some scenes. I realize she’s not a teenager anymore, and over the intervening decade she’s matured into an independent adult. But she always had a fire within her that’s barely flickering in this game. 2. Max sounds like she’s struggling to speak in some scenes. Not in a she’s-upset-and-her-voice-cracks kind of way, but as in Hannah-Telle-needed-a-drink-of-water kind of way. 3. In the original Life is Strange game, trying to keep Chloe alive and prevent the Storm was a cloud that hung over almost every scene of the game. Beyond that, there were several side events keeping the world interesting (Rachel Amber, Kate Marsh, Chloe’s step-father, etc.) On paper, trying to keep Chloe alive and prevent a major fire event is the cloud that hangs over Reunion , but it’s not felt. There’s a lack of urgency or emotional turmoil in most scenes. Everyone keeps reiterating the upcoming tragic event, but rarely does it feel dire. 4. Because Reunion doesn’t import saves from Double Exposure , it asks several questions up front to calibrate your world state. Outside of whether Chloe lived or died, most of these choices amount to flavor text. Characters might reference your past once or twice, but relationships and story outcomes remain largely unchanged. Even choices within the game itself rarely impact character behavior or story direction outside of identifying the firestarter and Safi’s arc. For a series built on emotional consequence, the illusion breaks quickly. 5. Not only do the choices before the game don’t really matter, neither do the choices within the game. Other than choosing who you think the firestarter is, nothing is impacted. The same things will happen, the characters will still act the same, nothing changes. The only real exception to this is with Safi, which was nice to see, but why only her? 6. Speaking of Safi, her big emotional scene is with Chloe , not Max. I get why thematically the devs did this, but emotionally, she needed a big scene with Max. Or even Moses, who she doesn’t even interact with for the entire game except for one line of dialogue towards the end. They’re supposed to be best friends, right? 7. Speaking of Moses, the supporting characters are walking plot devices. Amanda, Vinh, Moses, Loretta, Reggie, etc. They exist solely to move the story forward. You’re not going to deepen your relationship with any of them. You’re not going to learn anything new about them. They are cogs in the machine to complete Max’s quest. 8. The world is largely lifeless. Characters just sit or stand, waiting to be interacted with. You don’t sense that these characters have lives outside of interacting with Max or Chloe. Caledon felt alive in DE, but here’s it’s just wallpaper. The only real exception to this is the Abraxas party, which almost feels like a real party. But it’s still a fairly contained experience. 9. Perhaps the largest sin this game commits is keeping Max and Chloe separated for most of the playtime. The cycle begins with them meeting and talking, then they go off on separate quests until they reunite to fill each other in on what happened, then they might bond for a couple of minutes before separating again. Rinse, repeat until they come together for the final time at the end of the game. Consequently, this game skips on the shared hijinks of the first game. There’s no adventure to be had, no shared bonding experiences. Just investigations and debriefs. Regardless of any choices you make in Life is Strange: Reunion , Max and Chloe ride off into the sunset together . I guess the devs were afraid of messing that up after the hoopla surrounding Double Exposure . Double Exposure had lower lows than Reunion , but also higher highs. It felt like a complete game with major story problems, while Reunion feels like a rushed production with a stronger emotional core that never fully reaches its potential. At its best, the game briefly captures the feeling of “Max and Chloe are back.” Too often, though, it leans on nostalgia, procedural mystery plotting, and golden-hour aesthetics instead of the lived-in relationships and emotional intimacy that defined the original game. The first Life is Strange game is one of my favorite games ever, let alone of this series. If you’re invested in the Max and Chloe relationship, I’m sure you’ll find this game worthwhile. It would receive a mild recommendation from me. But if you’re new to this game franchise, this game is not the one to start with (let alone Double Exposure ). Go back to the first game. Or even True Colors . That was the last good game they put out. Double Exposure and Reunion just coast too much on dropping nostalgic characters onto hollow mystery boxes. The franchise is about the relationships we forge in the face of trauma and loss and how they can lift us up when we’re down. The last two games forgot that, so I can only recommend playing them to die hard fans. 3 out 5 stars with nostalgia glasses on. Pro Tip : I downloaded a mod to play “Obstacles” over the end montage. It works perfectly! I recommend installing it.

I finished Life is Strange: Reunion in about 10 hours, just one day after release, and as someone who has played the whole series from the very beginning, including the DLCs, this game hit me right in the heart. Seeing Max and Chloe again, especially since they’ve always been my favorites, was honestly priceless. I literally finished the game 5 minutes ago, and all I can think is: I need more. Just like I did with the other games, I’m already ready to go back, replay everything, see every possible outcome and every ending, and experience it all over again while waiting for the next game. *I need to save everyone*

No Life is Strange game will ever capture the lightning-in-a-bottle magic of the original, but if you enjoy the deep narrative, engaging mystery, fun characters, and slow exploration, you'll find this game as enjoyable as the others. For me, this one seems more polished and far more engaging than Double Exposure. Ignore the melodramatic whiners who compulsively seek attention by stirring up pointless drama. This game is great. Max and Chloe are awesome. Play it if that's your thing.
