First impression is very good. It has that Japanese style overly convoluted stat/gear system you just gotta roll with. Feels very much like Ast Libra and Odin Sphere. Kinda feels like a single player mmorpg from 2010 with the massive amount of quests going on that are just too numerous to pay attention to.

Lost Epic is akin to a best friend you meet for the first time without knowing he or she will become that best friend. In other words, it is a great game I put down for awhile due to other distractions so by the time I returned to it I realized just what I was missing. First and foremost the visual presentation is superb. I could complain there are not more exaggerated busty gals as playable avatars like the sorceress or amazon from Dragon's Crown yet Lost Epic is still done in that whimsically nostalgic 2D animated storybook vanillaware style. If you ever wanted a game similar to Salt And Sanctuary with a colorful and vibrant anime template along with more merciful difficulty sliders then Lost Epic will fulfill that wish. There are a multitude of classes to choose from whereas the ravaged world you find yourself in that is besieged by the holy ones is massive with a lot to explore and to unlock. Because of the aforementioned easier challenge threshold I would say Lost Epic leans closer to being a Metroid-vania than a Souls-vania. (Yet its' grandiose scale makes me want to use the term "Ultimate-vania" instead!) Regardless of semantics, the combat feels both crunchy and satisfying! This goes hand in hand with varied ways to build your character from the ground up. Whether you specialize in battle magic, the holy healing arts, or melee combat each path towards mastery is as viable as it is fun! You can make almost anything your heart desires with the excellent crafting system as well. However, you will have to go spelunking into the deepest dungeons, climb up the highest of spires, pluck the rarest of herbs, and collect arcane obscure mineral deposits whilst simultaneously slaying dreadful monsters, eldritch fiends, or self proclaimed gods to acquire those components. (Incidentally the fishing and cooking mini games are easy peasy and not a complete hassle! What a friggin relief!) It's not often you can pick up a "Lost Epic" that gives you so much content for the low admission cost of 17.99. Instead of paying inflated Triple A rates for slop why not give this one a fair shot? Your itch will be thoroughly scratched while you will be left with enough spare change to afford rent, the electric bill, and a decent dinner! What a bargain! Pro It's "Salt And Sanctuary" thru an anime lens and a vanillaware inspired coat of paint! Likewise runs great due to reasonable system requirements. Neutral There's not much hand holding. You can stumble haphazardly into a brand new area having missed out on important details, hidden recipes, pivotal encounters, and special abilities earlier on that make the overall experience much more satisfying. Yet I inevitably found myself relishing in the thrill of random exploration and new discoveries! Con Would have appreciated female avatar options in the more busty milf variety. That's the only nothing burger of a tiny grievance I could think of. Overall Lost Epic is an an exemplary example of what I want from this game genre! You might also like: Astlibra, After Image, Vigil Longest Night, Sword Of The Vagrant, and Frontier Hunter: Ezra's wheel of fortune.

Positive but barely. The game has a lot of negatives to go with the positives. The game is a sidescroll sort-of Soulsike sort-of Metroidvania type game. Things it does well: Skill tree is the main draw. Similar to a Souls game every enemy killed drops a souls-type currency that you spend on everything - leveling up, buying items, and forging equipment. Each level gives you a skill point to spend on the skill tree. Skill tree nodes can raise a specific stat, or grant a different kind of enhancement (elemental resist, increase crit, etc). You start out with only one page of the tree but each boss you kill unlocks a new page. Later pages give you better increases per point so sometimes it's better to save up and wait (though there is respeccing it is costly). There's three different main weapons (sword, 2h sword and bow) with magical subweapons and things scale off different stats so there are different builds you can make. Each weapon also has its own unique skill attached to it that you have to used a certain number of times to master after which you can equip it anytime. This means you want to forge a copy of every weapon at least once, and there's different weapon forging lines among the same weapon type so you keep four to six different lines going sort of like Monster Hunter. The best part is that you can only unlock about half the nodes with skill points, the rest you unlock via completing sidequest, killing minibosses, or finding monuments in the world. The constant advancement feels very good and it makes finding new areas enjoyable for the new stuff you'll unlock. Exploration is pretty good. There's lots of stuff to find in the maps if you hunt for them like skill nodes as detailed above but also equipment and equipment enhancement materials. The game isn't really a Metroidvania in that the level design isn't really gated by you unlocking different movement augmenting abilities. You have mostly the same moveset from beginning to end, and although there's a bit of non-linear exploration each area has a boss that you are required to defeat. One of the main flaws with the game is the animations especially outside of combat just feel extremely cheap and don't look very good. Your character's jump feels super floaty because the animation barely moves, the double jump doesn't even look like your character does anything. Your lateral jump sometimes for no reason turns into a half speed jump that doesn't move you as far as you expected, causing you to miss your platforming target. Platforming is very frustrating, which at first isn't a big deal but later levels make it an issue. The combat is a mixed bag. You have your basic light and heavy attacks with your weapon as well as five bindable special attacks that you can use freely but have cooldowns. There are some nice combos you can do chaining attacks together allowing you to juggle enemies for a fairly long time. When things are flowing combat does feel good. Hitting an enemy enough times opens up a finishing blow you can do which does big damage....but often isn't enough to kill a lot of enemies. You eventually start using this as sort of a way to reset your combo and start it again from behind the enemy. The problems creep in with how clunky things are. Half your moves crisply flow into each other, but there's a bunch that have chunky animation locks and don't flow well at all. Input buttons are routinely lost, dodge rolling frequently does not move you through an enemy like it is supposed to, the "parry" mechanic is finnicky and unreliable, the "counter" system routinely fails to trigger, item use is sluggish and sometimes just doesn't activate, and you can be interrupted very easily. The finishing blow activation uses arcane randomness to decide whether it will allow you to activate it or not when close to the enemy. Critting an enemy inexplicably causes the camera to jump cut around for no reason which is sometimes disorienting and becomes more frequent as you increase your crit rate (which you obviously want to do). Item use in general is a problem since you have to buy consumable items constantly, unlike a typical Souls game which has estus flasks or equivalent. Since items aren't refunded when you die on a boss you have to keep topping up, and sometimes even go farm which just feels awful. This is a solved problem in other games. Another problem is the English localization is just godawful. The story is barely there to begin with but the translations across the entire game are not even passable. Spelling and grammar errors everywhere, and just awkward unnatural sentence structure and word phrasing indicating a cheap inept localization. It actually causes problems when the text of several of the sidequests is confusing about what you need to do given the poor translation. It's both fun and frustrating. As scores go it's probably a 6 or 7/10.

It's a fun game, though with a lot of grind for upgrading materials. You can pretty much clear the game in about 20 hours and have your fun, getting endings C and D. As I understand it, you can still reload from the last save even after getting those endings, if you want to go for the better endings. If you're aiming for endings A and B that require almost all side quests completed by the time you check in with Cecilia for the final time, then the game pretty much overstays its welcome for the last 15 hours as you grind the side quests as well as Mist (used for ending A). The 2 new Abyss areas and bosses that open up for these endings aren't particularly interesting either. The ending boss rush and final boss was pretty cool though. Story-wise, there's practically nothing until you start to enter endings A and B, which is all the way at the end of the game, and then you get an exposition dump from the cat. So, not a very well paced story to push you along, which to be fair, a lot of metroidvanias suffer from this as well. You have to love the combat and exploration in order to sustain interest in this game. Overall still recommended, just bookmark some handy guides, maps and walkthroughs first to make the grind more tolerable (and there are indeed very good guides and map resources on PSNProfiles).
