To help other buyers, I thought I'd write an interview before Steam's 2 hour playtime refund-window closed on me. Disclaimers: I've not played the original mobile game this is based on. I bought this on at a -84% discount for about 5 USD, so that's the price point I'll be basing this around. And for as much of a fan I am of Battle Network, Zero, ZX/ZXA, I've not actually played a whole lot of OG Rockman, or of the X timeline games. 96 minutes of gameplay in, and I've just completed stage 3, am at the start of Stage 4. Looking forward, it looks like this is only part of Phase 1. Looks like 8 stages per Phase(ish), Phase 2 looks about the same size, and Phase 3 sounds like the end of the story mode. I'm seeing Event modes and another button currently locked to me, but they are there. At first, using a PS4 controller, this seemed a bit clunky. You start with B-rank X, you've got a megabuster and a sword, and can technically switch between the two, though they seem to be on a ammo-system that needs to refill/recharge when expended. I've mostly been using the buster, this game has an auto-lock-on that makes the buster dead simple to use and the saber puts me more at risk. Enemies are simple to kill or avoid, dodging isn't all that responsive though. I've kind of kept that overall feeling of "clunkiness" even up to this point of playtime, with one very notable exception. Where this started to really feel like a Megaman game? All the stages have a Normal Mode toggle and a Challenge Mode toggle. by the end of Stage 2, I decided to try Stage 1-1 again on challenge. More enemies, tankier, more damage, and the boss killed me. That surge of adrenaline finally broke my malais on this game, and I'm starting to get more into it. The onboarding is frankly atrocious, which I guess is typical for a mobile game. It doesn't hold your hand to upgrade your characters or gear, or tell you what chips are and why you want to equip them. The only thing guiding you around is going to the character setup and looking for that little orange-yellow dot signifying "you can do something here!" As is typical with mobile games, you do have typical achievement-rewards for that early-game dopamine boosts to hook you into keep playing so that later when the free stuff stops coming, you are enticed to spend money (for when this was a mobile game and not a offline port). Looking into the character roster is some serious nostalgia bait. We've got navis from Battle Network, reploids galore, and like 3 or 4 flavors of Bass. I've not looked into the various characters too much, but I currently have X and Zero, and a "S-Rank" playable character version of both that has better stats, but no alternate skins. It does have a snazzy DBZ powerup aura at all times though. But lets talk the Shop. I looked, and I can't find any gacha system. If there was one, it's gone now. So now you can buy characters with Zenny (earned from every mission), some sort of rainbow metal thing that I've mostly gotten from achievement rewards (but is also used to get the "cool" characters, like Omega and DarkMegaman.EXE), and then there's a third currency (some sort of key-card?) that seems to be for event skins that i've not found yet. But again, no randomness of a gacha, so you know what you are getting with your in-game currency. And this is offline, so no way to convert IRL currency. Overall, for a 5 USD purchase, I'm having a decent enough time. There's probably jank I haven't found yet, or design decisions I'll hate. There usually is. But again, enjoyment for price paid. Would I pay full price for this? 30USD? Oh good lord no. If I was feeling really desperate for some new Megaman content, maybe 10. But not full. My advice? Try the demo to see the janky movement. For the sake of your own sanity, use a controller, the keyboard bindings gave me a headache trying to understand them. Praise your mouse when you are in the menu, you'll move like 6x faster than controller stick. Get a feel for how this offline mobile not-a-gacha game feels. Then consider at what price point you'd pay to experience more. But personally, I'm going to keep trying out this weird little fanfiction-dream of a game. I only spent $5, so it's not like not getting a refund hurts me too much.

Regardless of its actual quality, this game is important for demonstrating that what Stop Killing Games is asking for is fundamentally reasonable. Supporting it will help the industry heal from the damage that gacha has done.

DISCLAIMER: I didn't pay full price for this game, I got it on sale for $5. This game is FANTASTIC when you just want a quick Mega Man fix! The various weapon options are nice, but the big draw is the roster of characters. X DiVE Offline is to Mega Man as Budokai Tenkaichi is to Dragon Ball; A toy box that you can dip into and play around with for hours, or even just a little bit. It's also cool that you can access the online events at your leisure through a menu, but they STILL rotate automatically as time passes! And if you're like me, and concerned about making all of your premium currency count, you'll be happy to know that the final story mode stage can actually be used to farm premium currency! It's not a ton at a time, but knowing there's an unlimited supply is still a comfort.

This game is essentially Mega Man fan fiction. The story is pretty subpar early on, but the real draw is getting to play as so many different fan favorite characters over all of the Mega Man games. The stage design gets better as you play further, and eventually the Challenge Modes wind up being the most fun since you can't just vaporize them by overleveling. Highly recommend figuring mods out, because they can speed up progression and introduce collab content that wasn't carried over by Capcom (for legitimate licensing reasons) as well as add entirely new characters, weapons, and options.

This is what every online-only game needs to do when it's no longer viable to keep the servers up. Thor is a moron. Stop killing games.
