July 2025
Amount of time required to complete the game: ~50-60 hours (could be higher or lower depending upon a variety of factors) Amount of time required to get all achievements: >200 hours (could be higher or lower depending upon how efficient you are at finishing them) Amount of time required to 100%: >400 hours (could be higher or lower depending upon efficiency) I define completing this game 100% as getting every single weapon and armor in the game, finishing the Monsterpedia, Monstiepedia, Gene Book, Gallery of Story Cutscenes, Gallery of Kinship Skills, Gallery of Double Kinship Skills including all add-on content , completing every subquest on the Quest Board at least once (again, including all add-on content, as well as all Trial, Tourmanet, and Online content , getting every one-time item from Melvine Inc., finding all of the Catavan Stands in the game, and upgrading every armor and weapon to max level, and finishing both the Elder's Lair and Secret Elder's Lair. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin follows the story of you, the player, as you go through the rites of becoming a Monster Hunter on a fateful day in Mahana Village. Of course, not everything goes to plan, as shimmering red light can be seen on the horizon. You quickly go into the woods and after a lot of story, you are entrusted with Ratha's egg by Ena. You go back to the village and start your adventure. In terms of the story, it was pretty good up until the part where Ratha gains the ability to Fly , and then it's kind of just filler until the last hour or two. The main villian of the game is very easy to predict who it will be and the last bosses of the game aren't that difficult. Overall, the story was pretty good, but didn't stick in my head for a while afterword. This game is your standard Monster Hunter fare, with the exception that you are a Rider, and you form bonds with Monsties that you hatch from eggs that you gather from Monster Dens around the world. Some are more powerful than others, and some have more useful skills than others. There are quite a few different locales that you can visit, but you will need to backtrack once you get Monsties with certain skills so that you can go through and collect everything in the previous areas. This part kind of aggravated me a little bit. Monsties also come with a grid of Genes that indicate the abilities and supports that they have. It is a 3x3 grid, and usually, there are some spots that cannot be opened, and there are some spots that you will have to unlock either through leveling or various other means. Again, some Genes are harder to come by than others, and certain Genes can only be found on certain monsters (more on this later). Eventually, you will learn to combine these Genes together (of the same time) of the same type to increase their power, and also be able to move Genes from one Monstie to another, sacrificing the Monstie you are moving the Gene from in the process. There is a book of Genes that you can fill out, but you won't be able to fill it out until late into the Post-Game. This is where my sticking point was. I only had two or three genes left, however, the Monsties that I needed to genes from have all sorts of other genes, and ALSO only show up in Rare Monster Dens, which are quite a lot rarer than regular Monster Dens. On top of that, they have a low chance of actually having the Genes that I was looking for. I ended up stopping playing this game needing only 3 Genes to complete my Gene Book. This game has you playing with yourself and an NPC, which brings into clear focus a lot of problems when it comes to the AI of your partner...they can decide to waste valuable healing items on you when you can handle the healing and other quirks like that, but they are competent enough during the main story and even the post-game that this shouldn't cause you any issues. You get a variety of partners to choose from by the end of the game and post-game, and each of them have their own strengths and weaknesses. This game has online missions that you can complete with other players, however, since this game came out so long ago, there is usually no one in the lobby that would be willing to help you defeat some of the hardest online missions in the game, but I was able to get by with AI partner on almost every online mission. The main sticking point that a lot of people have is with the current DRM incorporated into the game, The Enigma Protector, which is a Russian run company. I have spent probably 50-70 hours reading up about this DRM and the company itself, and I have seen a lot of arguments for both sides (it being malware and it not really doing much). The main thing it does is prevent modding. I am neutral on this point. So, pros, neutral, cons: Pros: +Pretty well fleshed out story, though isn't too rememberable. +Very well fleshed out Gene system that allows you to really make some Monsties have some ridiculous skills/supports. +Overall gameplay loop is very well fleshed out and is entertaining, to a point. +Pretty nice online missions, but you will have trouble finding people to help you unless you have friends that are willing to help. +A nice variety of places to go and biomes to see in the world. +Music is absolutely on point. +Pretty robust partner system, each with their own strengths and weaknessess.. +Really need post-game dungeon...with an evil twin... +Works great on Steam Deck Neutral: Enigma DRM - You can decide for yourself whether or not this is something you want to deal with. Negative: -Some of the Genes in the game are too rare/too hard to find. You shouldn't have to spend 20-40 hours doing the same thing over and over just to get one Gene added to your book. Extremely frustrating. -Partner AI can be pretty bad at times; healing you when it isn't needed, attacking when you don't want them to, etc. -The hardest Online Missions can only realistically be comepleted with more than one human, one human and one AI Partner isn't enough to get the job done. -In order to get every Catavan Stand in the game, you have to be able to complete the Secret Dragon's Lair up to Floor 9 (I believe, haven't played the game in ages). This dungeon is the same as the original dungeon, but all of the monsters are much harder and do not show you how much health they have left. This can be quite a daunting challenge for those just wanting to get every Catavan Stand in the game. Overall, this game is very good, and I can give a slight recommendation and would recommend to get it on sale if you are willing to deal with the massive amounts of RNG as well as the Enigma DRM. P.S.: Deluxe Edition Razewing Layered Armors are amazing.

THIS GAME IS TRULY ABSOLUTE CINEMA. Played this game when it first came out on the Switch. Replayed the first one a few months back and now I just finished the sequel. Monster Hunter Stories 2 is a masterpiece. Genuinely top 5 games of all time for me. This game is better than the first, but the first is still worth playing if you enjoy Monster Hunter and turn based combat as much as I do. MHST2 has a cleaner feel to it, the combat is simple but there are so many little things to pick up on. The gene system is brilliant, and you don't even have to interact with it if you find it tedious or you do not want to min/max. I personally love egg hunting for genes, and creating the perfect team. AND THE MUSIC... I MEAN DO I EVEN HAVE TO COMMENT ON IT? The MH team ALWAYS brings their best when it comes to music, and this game is no different. These games fill my heart with so much happiness. The story may be cheesy, but let's be real... the power of friendship always wins. (im sorry) One of the only games I will rate a perfect 10/10 <3

This game RIPS. It feels like the dev team really knew where to focus their efforts to get the most bang for their buck. The story is fine, about the quality of the average monster hunter game but skewed a little younger. Graphical fidelity is passable, it's clearly a switch port but the art style pulls a lot of weight. The real meat is in the surprisingly engaging turn-based combat and top tier monster collecting loop. Even if you're not already a monster hunter fan, the amount of love put into the animations and special attacks of every monster is kinda crazy, all the more so if you're familiar with them from the mainline games. I've never been a completionist style of player but this game had me fiending for rare dens and more genes to play with to beef up my squad. And doing so has immediate, satisfying results in the battle system. There's enough room for creativity and variety in how you structure your team but it maintains enough difficulty to keep you on your toes, provided you aren't grinding super hard and getting overleveled. If you're at all interested in monster hunter or a new turn-based rpg to try, give this a shot. It's so much better than you would expect a smaller spin off title to be.

my only complaint is that the story ended to soon. this was honestly everything i would have wanted as a part 2 to this game. the graphics were beautiful yet still held true to the original- and continued the story in a familiar way while still being new and exciting. also cheval is back. i really cant complain- i missed my favorite boy.
