Mullet Mad Jack is a fast-paced shooter where each level typically takes around 25 seconds to complete on average. It features roguelike elements, but the game itself is not entirely roguelike, as it has a storyline with a fixed level design during your initial run. However, they get randomized after you beat the game once. After each floor, you are presented with upgrade choices such as new weapons and bonuses that affect a variety of gameplay elements. The aim is to move fast and keep the timer going by killing enemies either by shooting them or using the environment. Each difficulty offers a new challenge by altering the rules. There are even “No Timer” and “Permadeath” modes that you can tackle, but there is no achievement tied to beating the “Permadeath” mode, so the only reward you’ll be getting is going to be a pair of sneakers, which, in my opinion, is not worth stressing over at all. The story is a satirical comedy that takes place in a distant future that is dominated by “rich” AI robots that have enslaved humans. Humans need dopamine every 10 seconds; otherwise, they die. As the game describes their pitiful existence, they are basically reduced to a currency called the audience, and they watch chosen people trying to kill “rich” robots on live to get their dopamine rush. If they were to fail to kill anything within 10 seconds, they would collectively execute the guy due to the lack of dopamine. The goal of these chosen ones is to rescue the “Influencer Princess” from the rich robots. It’s a very clever satirical criticism of today’s world since almost all of us have reduced attention spans due to scrolling reels on social media. The atmosphere is purely 80s, as one could easily say that the game is partially inspired by Hotline Miami and largely inspired by the 80s anime. However, this gameplay style was invented by Post Void. The soundtrack is also top-notch, but since each level takes a very short time to beat, you don’t get to enjoy it enough. TL;DR A fast-paced game with roguelike elements that each level takes about 25 seconds to beat. The art style is heavily inspired by the anime from the 80s, and the gameplay is partially inspired by Hotline Miami. However, one must give credit to Post Void for inventing this particular gameplay. The story is a satirical criticism of today’s world, and its soundtrack is also wonderful, but due to the fast-paced nature of the game, it’s very difficult to properly process the beauty of it.

Mullet Mad Jack combines fast-paced FPS action with rogue-like elements and an aesthetic inspired by 90s anime to deliver a challenging, yet entertaining experience focused on constantly making the right moment-to-moment decisions Considering how the FPS genre has seen surprisingly little gameplay variety in the AAA space during the past few years, it’s a delight to see smaller developers pushing the genre forward in their own way. 2024’s Mullet Mad Jack , the first game from Brazilian indie studio Hammer95, is one of those titles: Through the combination of boomer shooter-y gameplay with rogue-like elements and - most importantly - a 10 second timer, Mullet Mad Jack makes for an entirely unique FPS game that’s as fun to play as it’s to look at it’s 90s anime inspired aesthetic. The “main course” of the game would be its campaign mode, which has to be beaten at least once in order to unlock an endless mode. Offering multiple episodes/stages, each episode features 10 floors the player needs to beat as well as successfully defeat a boss at the end. This straightforward concept is modified through various rogue-like elements: Each floor is not only randomly generated (although this can be turned off) but also offers a randomised set of upgrades (e.g. new weapons, higher movement speed) to choose from. More importantly, however, if you die before beating the boss at the 10th floor, you’ll have to start over at the first floor of the episode again – although permanent upgrades rewarded for beating an episode will make you life easier (e.g. unlocking higher weapon levels). While this would already make for an entertaining concept, the true star of Mullet Mad Jack would be it’s time limit mechanic: The player’s character only has 10 very short seconds to live - should the time run out, an automatic game over is triggered. However, not only does killing enemies add seconds to the timer (not on the highest difficulties), killing them in creative ways (kicking them into lasers, killing many at once, performing special executions through picked-up items) does as well! As such, beating a floor requires quick thinking and moment-to-moment decision making apart from only being decent at shooting enemies – how can I get the most seconds out of a combat scenario? Do I go for well-aligned headshots, or can I use the environment for better effect? Especially on the game’s intended difficulty, which is on the harder side, Mullet Mad Jack isn’t “just” a test of your reflexes and FPS aim. As such, if you’d like to be rewarded for quickly analysing combat scenarios (enemy types, enemy placement, environmental hazards) and immediately putting your strategy to the test, this is the game for you. Mullet Mad Jack is probably the fastest FPS I have played but unless you heavily detest time mechanics in videogame, it’s oh so worth it. While there are plenty of difficulty options to allow for a more leisure experience, if you’re an experienced FPS player, I highly recommend giving the intended difficulty of the game (“Challenge”) a try. It might be on the harder side, but it does require you to engage with the game’s combat system a lot more – in an entertaining way - than simply shooting your way through everything. What probably catches the eye of most people first, however, would be Mullet Mad Jack ’s distinct style. Heavily wearing its inspiration on its sleeves, the game is heavily channelling the look, sound and feel of 80s action anime. A protagonist bursting with testosterone, overdramatic voice lines, a campy story as well as powerful beats make Mullet Mad Jack an audiovisual treat for fans of the likes of Akira or Fist of the North Star . I was especially delighted that the game even offers a “virtual unboxing” of Mullet Mad Jack , which even included a digital manual with more information about the world. That said, while the game’s length of 5-6h on higher difficulty is perfect for the amount of depth and variety it offers (as well as the aforementioned endless mode for those who still want to keep going) and Mullet Mad Jack was overall most entertaining for an anime and FPS fan like me, I do want to point out some criticisms - although I’m wholeheartedly recommending giving the game a try if you like it’s style or are interested in the gameplay. For one, at least on the “Challenge” difficulty, the last two sets of floors in the campaign present quite a difficulty spike in my opinion and I wish the ramp-up was built up more gradually instead. Apart from the drastic increase in enemies and environmental hazards, I feel like the visual style of Mullet Mad Jack didn’t do the game any favours at this point: While still beautiful to look at of course, the overabundance of visual effects happening on screen at the same time can be quite distracting at this point in the game. I had a hard time tracking my remaining seconds and health while my screen is filled with colourful building interior, lots of different robots, lasers, fire pits and explosions all at once, for example. While the design of Mullet Mad Jack is loud and not holding back for a reason, during the past few floors I wished it was a little less over-the-top for gameplay reasons at times. Second, the quality of the bosses can be hit-or-miss. Apart from the “fights” themselves, which I won’t go into for spoiler reasons, some obtained upgrades can make bosses entirely trivial at times. For example, the “lava shoe” upgrade, which makes you immune to damage from lava floors, can trivialise a certain boss fight as you’re no longer confined to a small stone island in a big lava room – giving you all the space needed to easily evade all attacks. Lastly, while the campy story definitely fits Mullet Mad Jack and aligns well with its inspirations, I still feel like developers could’ve been able to pull off something more interesting. Again, that’s not to say that the current story doesn’t work or fit the game, but the developers seem to have a hand for world-building and I would’ve been delighted to see them do even more with the setting. Still, in the end Mullet Mad Jack remains a shorter but very entertaining and unique FPS experience that’s definitely worth your time and money if you like playing stylish and/or more creative adaptations of the FPS formula. This is an excellent first game for a game studio and I’ll definitely keep an eye out for what Hammer95 does next now.

Nobody can kill you if you are dead inside! Mullet Madjack is a fast-paced FPS in which a lot is happening, but you must be quick to avoid dying, as you only have ten seconds to live. The game gives off that retro anime-like feel from the 90s, when you knew it was a niche, and only a few people knew about it. I loved how well everything is animated and the one-liners that are thrown at you are full of charisma. Pros and Cons Pros [*]Really fun and action-packed 90’s anime-like story [*]Fantastic voice acting [*]Fun, fast-paced gameplay where you only have ten seconds to live [*]Power-ups that help spice up gameplay [*]Nice weapon variety to help take out enemies [*]Catchy anime like soundtrack [*]Beautiful 90’s like retro anime graphics Cons [*]Some of the upgrades you get aren’t that helpful [*]Only a few weapons are worth using Story In the year 2090, man and the internet have merged into one being and it needs Dopamine every ten seconds, or it will die. AI has taken over and they have started to become Robillionaires , while humanity is called Retro-humans , these people need dopamine to remain alive. Peace Corps is seeking moderators, human mercenaries tasked to help take out these Robillinaries . However, the highest-grossing one, Mr. Bullet has kidnapped the princess , and her two billion followers are left in shock, Jack Banhammer is hired to take Mr. Bullet out and save the princess . Mullet Madjack’s story is action-packed and full of that 90s anime charm. It’s full of one-liners that are amusing to hear. The game isn’t story-heavy, but what is given to us is pretty good, the characters, with only five in total, are all fun and have something that makes them stand out from each other. Overall, I liked the story for the game, and it feels very anime-like, I also really loved how the English voice acting was done. All the voices sounded perfect, and they fit with their characters very well. I also found the story a little funny, as the characters' personalities are full of charm. Gameplay In Mullet Madjack , you must reach the end of each floor to move on to the next floor, however, you need to make sure your dopamine is kept in check. You only have ten seconds to live before you die, so you may be wondering, how do I make sure I keep myself alive? Well, there are two ways. The first one is getting kills, depending on how you get that kill, will determine how many seconds you get. Head shots give you three, while normal kills give you two. You can also find vending machines that give you soda, and they will refill your timer back to ten. Also, enemies will still attack you and if you get hit, you will lose some time on your dopamine . There are boss fights at the end of each floor and instead of a ten second timer, you are given a health meter instead. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3446064764 The gameplay is fast-paced and full of action, you can find melee weapons scattered throughout the stages, with these you can get melee kills that insta kill most enemies. They also refill your timer to max, so I recommend you do these in a pinch or to take out an enemy you hate dealing with. At the end of each stage, you are given a choice between a select power up, these power ups will only last until you move on to the next floor. Each floor has ten stages to it, where you will shoot enemies to keep your timer up. You are giving the choice of three power-ups to choose from, and you can only choose one. There are also permanent upgrades you can get after beating a boss. These upgrades can also be upgraded twice, you can get your weapons to be more powerful or have more power-up options. There are a few different weapons for you to get your hands on that can spice up the gameplay in a few ways. There is an SMG, shotgun, katana, and a few others, you can use in the levels, these weapons can also be upgraded and can go up to level 3. I should note that it’s best to not rush the levels, take your time while going through them. Kills are important, as you need them to stay alive, so just kill any enemy you see on the screen. You can only carry one weapon with you at a time, and once you move onto the next stage, you will lose that weapon. There is a permanent upgrade that will let you keep one of your power ups or weapons after beating a level. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3446066507 However, as much as I like the power-ups and the weapons that the game gives you, they both lead onto two issues I had. There are power-ups that I personally never found useful, now I was going for mostly head shots, which, I assume the game wants you to do. But some power-ups can make your bullets pierce through enemies so you can kill more of them. Which is fine, but there aren’t a whole lot of situations where enemies will be beside each other like that. There are some joke power ups, like giving Jack the ability to say more one-liners, which I would rather have than armor piercing. Which is something I thought I would never say but here we are. That also leads onto some of the guns that you can use, there are a few that I would rather just straight up avoid using. The shotgun is my least favorite weapon to use because enemies die in one to three shots anyway. The railgun I didn’t like because it felt odd to use, and the katana I just avoided using after using it once. My favorite weapon in the game is the one you start with, the pistol, and it’s the best weapon in the game at level three, as you get infinite ammo. Graphics and Performance The graphics for the game are fantastic, the game uses this vaporware kind of art style, and if you are someone who loves that, then I think Mullet Madjack will satisfy that love for the style. I tested the game on an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, AMD Ryzen 5 1500X Quad-Core Processor 3.50, and 16 GB of RAM, I experienced no issues while playing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3446067018 Final Verdict Mullet Madjack is a very fun FPS that I enjoyed from start to finish. The idea for its gameplay is just outright fun, and for those that want an FPS with a unique twist. However, I would wait for a sale, as there is only about three hours of content in the game. There are a few other difficulty options and some other game modes, but to me, that’s not worth 25 CDN. Other than that, I do personally think Mullet Madjack is worth it. As it’s an experience worth remembering, for any kind of anime fan. Literally one of the best FPS games of all-time. You know how you watch speed runners and you think 'How the F*CK do they do that? That is INSANE!" That is how YOU will feel YOU are playing this game. It isn't a hard game, or even a long game, but it is damned near perfection. I look forward to anything Hammer95 makes from now on. An absolute banger.

Realize that nobody cares! Mullet Mad Jack is one of the coolest FPS games I've played so far. I didn't get to play it in it's release year but it probably has won my heart for this year. I want to talk about all the ups and downs I've experienced and review the game overall as someone who barely plays the FPS genre. The game plays at a fast pace on limited time with roguelike elements, offering you an average range of selection on weapons and fun skills that can twist your gameplay or change minor stats. On my first playthrough, I found the game a tad too easy which made me see hard/insane to be the only playable difficulties as they offer potentially longer game time and challenge. Most enemies are conveniently placed which makes aiming cake walk and the game offers you various tools and environment traps around rooms to counter specific enemies or get creative kills for more time. I saw some negative reviews comparing some mechanics to similar titles but people SHOULD treat this game in it's own sense and what it's trying to do. I don't see a point in comparing these factors to completely different games and think that MMJ should have had them too. It's unique in it's own sense and this applies to every other game which receives unfair critic in this part. I think the game is pretty smooth in it's current state but here's what could've been different and what it potentially lacks: - Rooms are way too repetitive and unique events are limited as there's only the slide room apart from the traditional generated ones. - The campaign is unfortunately short lived. I really would have loved more of this story maybe with a unique twist. ~ The game has a cool standard soundtrack, but there's no element in the game that shines the spotlight on it. Some upgrades like the akimbo soda could've slightly tweaked gameplay for a short time to make it focus on the music or change it in some way. ~ The glitch effects (which I think are added as part of the hallucination factor?) was probably the worst design choice this game made for me. It was just annoying more than anything and I can't find an excuse to make it sound good in any way. ~ The default weapons felt like they were just offering different rates of fire more than anything. I personally didn't find the selection too interesting but I'm happy that it doesn't offer anything too extreme either. The upgrades also felt bland for the most part. ~ The idea of changing the health mechanic during bossfights was alright but it missed the potential to tweak the already existing time mechanic to allow for more fun and engaging bossfights. - As previously mentioned, bosses are what it should be like for this genre and I don't actually see it as a flaw, but they still miss some engagement that the game has during it's gameplay against normal enemies because they had unique mechanics whereas the bosses felt like shooting dummies with higher hitpoints. (The finale section made it up for that fact) + The game is really aesthetically pleasing, keeps you engaged throughout the entire gameplay and punishes you for lapses in concentration. + We unfortunately don't have many stars in this show but the ones we have are more than enough. Jack has been one of my favourite protagonists since the moment I've played this game, he keeps you in the game with one-liners and advices (they even give you an upgrade to make him talk even more!!!!), has a cool background and design overall. The antagonist is also another familiar voice just like Jack having Kiryu's VA for himself. He isn't replacing Gabriel in most people's hearts but Gianni's role as Mr. Bullet is definitely my second favourite performance from him. He keeps you in the pace with twists all the time and his fight making it up for all the other bosses which I found disappointing. + The voice acting and sound design is top notch, with a really useful option to mute the streamer. + Adding an option to remove the timer as a difficulty is pretty good. Lets you experience the game in a different way. But of course, these are just ideas and what I think the game could've had in a personal vision. I think this game is still nearly perfect in it's current state. I don't consider them flaws as these are mostly the standards of this boomer-shooter genre from what I know and this game executes them decently. I have only came across a few critical bugs and I sadly have to say they ruined my experience from time to time, they were movement-related and my character stopped moving in most times. The other being that my camera flicked offset when exiting air ducts. I don't know if anyone else had experienced these bugs but they were some that I came across during my gameplay. Needless to say, this will stay an unforgettable experience that I will come back to play from time to time. Girls love basic hygiene!
