My dog is still alive. I thought this game was about losing a dog. But in fact in feels like it's also about losing time. The ending didn't make me cry because Bong-gu found his dad. It made me cry because one day my dog will be waiting for me too. I wasn't emotionally prepared for that. If your dog is still with you, go hug them. If you've never loved a dog, this game won't explain it. If you have, it won't need to explain. Recommended.
I had a corgi named Tootsie who passed in 2024. When I saw this game's demo, I knew I was not ready to play it in any capacity, but that I wanted to eventually. Just finished the game, and oh my god. I think I've been compelled to write a review on steam for only two other games, but this one is for sure the most deserving. A perfect combo of wholesome and heart-wrenching. Beautiful stylized graphics and fun, varied mechanics that all feel cohesive. A few of the levels reminded me of some of my favorite games, such as Journey and Okami. This game was even more cathartic for me than I thought it would be, and I absolutely recommend it for anyone who feels strongly for an animal in their life--especially those who have lost one.
I bought this on sale around the time my little girl was diagnosed with cancer. She was laying behind me the entire time and I couldn't help but look back on occasion and just shed a tear. Her love means so much to me and I felt it every step of the way in this game. I know within the deepest part of my heart, she would do the same. One big adventure just to see me again. As would I. Thank you for making this wonderful experience. In my 20+ years on Steam, it's very very rare to have felt so much emotion in a game.
I just want to preface this review saying I decided to play this the day my childhood corgi, Ellie, crossed over the rainbow bridge (fatal mistake btw, unless you enjoy bawling your eyes out). "My Little Puppy" is a fairly average platformer that shines at telling a tragically intimate yet phenomenal tale. Anyone who has had a canine companion will instantly recognize the whimsical nature of a dog's life encapsulated in story form. The gameplay takes a backseat while you reminisce about the memories you shared with your best friend, or grieving the loss of a cherished pet that maybe left this realm a little too soon. It'd be silly to ask anyone with a dog in this Millenia if they'd ever read "The Rainbow Bridge", and even more silly to deny the profound impact its had on me growing up even as a non-religious person. As much as I don't believe in a perceived heaven, this game reminds me of how much I wish it to be true, and that someday we'll be reunited at the gates of that prismatic bridge. So thank you "My Little Puppy" for allowing me to laugh, cry, and remember the cherished times I had with my furry friend-through a hobby that holds dear in my, and many people's hearts. And thank you for being the bestest girl ever Ellie, I'll miss you so much. 2.26.2012 - 12.30.2025
this game is the deeply personal true story of the creator’s adopted welsh corgi. My Little Puppy uses the game as a moving story to portray the inescapable tragedy of pet loss, something all pet owners must face one day... or already has, like me. the game had me in tears as soon as I started playing, and I had to put it down multiple times. as I played on, it slowly became bearable again. the funny and cute moments were worth it, very much so. what stands out most to me are the raw truths the game doesn't shy away from, including one I knew from real life many years ago... a vet in Taiwan who was so crushed by guilt and grief from euthanizing strays that she ended her life using the same drug she used on them. her death led to Taiwan banning the euthanasia of stray animals. this real story was in the game, and it broke me the hardest. has anyone else found themselves crying while writing their review for this game? (also not helping that I'm listening to sad music while writing this) I can’t think straight right now, so I’ll stop here.
