This is a game made with Viva La Dirt League fans in mind, the references will likely go over the heads of those who don't watch their skits. The large majority of the game is good but it relys to heavily on backtracking back and forth, whether it be to recollect bait for the fiftyth time or to travel all the way across the map for a single stage in a quest. It gets mind numbing. If I didn't get the references I don't know if I'd like the game.

I would like to make one thing perfectly, and abundantly clear. I... HATE... Fishing. Fishing in games is boring and tedious. It's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ minigame that more often than not, relies on RNG that can have you stuck in one spot sitting for hours trying to get one thing so you can actually do literally anything else. It's even worse when progression is locked behind it. Games that didn't have fishing in them were fine, until they added it, and it became miserable. I've uninstalled games for ♥♥♥♥ like this. I abhor it with every fiber of my being. The nerve endings in my body heat up with anger anytime I think about having to do it in games. When they added it to No Man's Sky, I dreaded the day they made it a progression point for expeditions. It made me lose the will to finish them. Or play the game at all. You always have to hope you get the right catch so you can move on. Could be the first cast or the thousandth. Either way, you're stuck there until it's done. And don't get me started on fishing in MMOs. Having to sit in one spot, hitting the same two buttons for hours or even sometimes DAYS on end, just to even attempt to fish up rare materials to make something, or trade it in, so you can move on to the actual fun parts of the game is so mind-numbingly painful to me. There are people who defend this by saying it's more realistic to actual fishing this way. If I wanted realism, I wouldn't be playing a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ video game. My personal hell is the ability to play any game I want, but only the fishing portions of those games. I hate it. So much. That being said... These bastards somehow managed to take the single-most infuriating aspect of any game I have ever played and made it actually, GENUINELY fun. I loved every moment of this game. Everything was well paced and engaging in a way I enjoyed. The characters were hilarious and endearing. The quests, and even the challenges, were so fun that I ended up casually 100%ing this game without any reservations. They cracked the code. They figured out how to make fishing fun for me. Well done, gentlemen. Well done.

If you're a fan of VLDL and Epic NPC Man this is a must play. If you've never heard of the show, you need to fix that. This game is very charming in style and story as well as doing its own thing in terms of gameplay mechanics. You may look at it and think "another indie fishing game" but it really doesn't live up to that stereotype. The "fishing" is a new take on the concept that incorporates RPG elements and character progression while at the same time slowly unlocking underwater exploration options similarly to a metroidvania. With that said the game is almost completely linear and at times feels like a never-ending MMO fetch quest. If you know the backstory, this actually makes sense and can be overlooked if you enjoy the writing. Although pretty cheesy at times, if you know VLDL, then you know what you're going to get here. As a fan I think the price tag is reasonable for the amount of game you get and the gameplay is fun if at times repetitive.

6.5/10 – Funny, but not quite the catch I hoped for. As a big Viva La Dirt League fan, this game definitely made me smile. The humor, references, and voice acting are spot on—it really feels like stepping into one of their sketches. For fans, that alone makes it worth checking out. That said, once the initial laughs fade, there’s not much depth to keep you hooked. The gameplay can get pretty repetitive and drawn out, which makes it hard to stay engaged for long. I wanted to 100% it, but honestly, it just didn’t feel worth the grind. Verdict: Great fan service and classic VLDL humor, but shallow gameplay and pacing drag it down. Fun once, not for the long haul.

I'm happy to support Viva La Dirt but this game is not that great. I'm happy to see it has overall good reviews but if it wasn't for it being based on their skits, it wouldn't be rated well. The game is just a back and forth grind. Go here, get this, come back. The story isn't anything special either. I'll give it positive for the support factor but it's a negative in terms of actual gameplay.
