July 2025
Old School Rally is developed by Frozen Lake Games and released in 2024 in early access. Remember the last century? Those were the good old days! What a joy to see that talented developers, nostalgic for that golden era, had the brilliant idea to create a rally game worthy of the classics of yesteryear, like Colin McRae, V-Rally, Sega Rally, or International Rally Championship. The retro vibe is beautifully captured, truly making you feel like you’re back in the ‘90s. The delightfully retro, pixelated, and polygonal graphics are a feast for the eyes, and for me, they’re an absolute treat. Add to that a killer soundtrack blending rock, drum & bass, and synthwave that makes the game even cooler. But let’s get to the heart of it: the racing, obviously. Fans of winding roads and adrenaline-pumping thrills, rejoice! The driving feel is super fun, ultra-arcade, and easy to pick up. No overcomplicating things: just pure, simple pleasure. Each comes in a version very close to their iconic liveries, but with fictional sponsors and names. Some cars are unlocked as you progress through the Rally mode, while others must be purchased with winnings from your victories. You can even customize each car’s livery to your heart’s content thanks to the Steam Workshop! Trust me, you’ll see the world from behind the wheel of these souped-up beasts. Nothing beats a high-speed global tour to get the full experience. You’ll race through Australia, Sweden, Arizona, the UK, China, Finland, Japan, Kenya, Germany, and Greece at breakneck speed! With so many locations come wildly different environments, weather, and tracks. You’ll tackle dirt paths, gravel trails, snowy roads, and smooth asphalt under clear skies, fog, rain, day, or night… Old School Rally offers several game modes to keep you busy for hours. Let’s start with Rally Mode, which is essentially the game’s career mode. You’ll take on various competitions, each featuring a selection of stages to complete within a time limit, often rewarding you with cash and a bonus car. Every two races, you can clean and repair your car if it’s taken a beating. Be warned: damage isn’t just cosmetic: it affects your car’s performance and handling! The Daily Challenge, as the name suggests, is a unique race you can tackle each day on a set track, but with the car of your choice. Complete it, and you’ll pocket $1,000 to save up for future purchases while awaiting the next day’s challenge. Time Trial Mode lets you try to beat your own times on specific stages or compete against other players’ times if you’re feeling competitive. Finally, Versus Mode pits you against an AI opponent or another player locally on the track of your choice. A nice little touch: there’s a Collection menu where every car you own is displayed as a miniature model on a shelf. You can customize the room to your liking, from the shelf’s color to the wallpaper and surrounding decor. I can honestly say it’s been ages since I had this much fun with a rally game. If you’re hesitating about buying it… don’t! Just go for it! This is a game I’d recommend to everyone, from newcomers to the genre to seasoned drivers.

This is the one. I've always wanted a simulation-style rally game with non-realistic aesthetics. Now, this game is not entirely sim. It's pretty close. But more pragmatically, this game is a fair mixture of retro aesthetics, arcade modes, and sim-ish mechanics. I don't like writing Early Access reviews. That said, I feel compelled to make an exception for this game — so much can change so fast. However, I feel this game is already very good, and will only get better. In its current state, it lacks longevity. It's missing features like daily or weekly challenges, something that will bring you back after you've completed the rally events and time trial modes. It does have a versus mode, either player to player or versus AI, but I personally don't feel this mode is that compelling. The main progression is completing the Rookie, Intermediate, Pro etc Rallies, and unlocking all the cars. There's also some vague sense of progression in the time trial mode where not all tracks are unlocked until you've completed another section of that stage under the given time. At the time of writing, the game only has Rally A, S and Classic cars/rallies. Deeper Mechanics I feel the game maintains itself as an approachable entry point to Rally in general, but is still very technical as far as the actual driving. Different terrain affects grip. But you won't be doing a lot of weight shifting to perform pendulum turns, however the game's internal physics still require a decent of amount of precision and technical understanding of the tracks and how different cars respond to different terrain. There is no worry about tires, there is no need to use soft/hard tires to balance grip/endurance. Which is slightly disappointing, but you have to consider that this is an indie title and it really shouldn't be compared to larger budget titles. There are weather effects, but I largely found them to not affect the actual driving. Damage as well, it's mostly cosmetic. It's persistent through a single rally, but it's more of a health bar that you have to use 'time' in-between stages to repair. I think this game looks incredible/Deck Specs I'm not sure what it is about this low-poly/pixel filter aesthetic, but it just looks amazing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3401183395 This game runs incredibly on the Deck — perhaps unsurprisingly. At the native 800p, max settings, the Deck easily pushes 90 FPS using only about 11-13W, depending on the stage. My theory is that the anti-aliasing on the stages with a lot of foliage causes the Deck to pull those extra 2W. I think a game like this would be a shining example as a candidate for the theoretical “Steam Deck Lite” that I so desire. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3401186504 The Gist This game checks a lot of boxes for me. It offers a lot at its current price point, but I would love to see it expand into something more. Jan 2025 update — a daily challenge has been added. I have looked at the negative reviews before buying, and now that I took the plunge and played the game, I can't really say that most of the criticism is called for. It's exactly what it says on the box. A PS1-styled rally game of ye olden times. Nothing more, nothing less. But what it does, the game does very well. I didn't even expect a lot, I only bought it because I had my nostalgia goggles on at the time, but the game absolutely managed to pull me back into the 90s; back into a time in my life when video games came ready made, without dlcs and what have you, it's all in there, up for grabs. And it WORKS, most importantly. The music is also very well made. Nothing revolutionary, of course, and that is per design, since all this game is trying to do is replicate what has been lost to the stream of time. I'm kinda loving it. There's more passion in this than in any of the later Need for Speeds or Colin McRae Rallys, for sure. Am definitely looking forward to another game of the dev and will most likely buy it at full price.

A simple but very enjoyable rally game, there isn't much content yet but it's priced fairly to reflect that and its in early access so I look forward to returning to it in the future.
