I have to confess - four years ago I wanted to play this game, but I was 16 and broke. So, I went and pirated the game on a random Google Drive repository. What I got was one of the most heartbreaking and emotionally compelling stories I've seen both then and now, establishing itself as one of my favorite games ever made. Four years later, I'm reviewing this masterclass of storytelling that I bought for the full $20 list price. Art and Music Firstly, the art is great and the soundtrack is just a banger. If OMORI was a steak, these would be the seasonings that bring out the flavor and turn it into a memorable experience. The soundtrack is great from both the overworld segments where it creates a memorable atmosphere (both the good and bad), to the boss battle themes that sound thrilling. The pixel art is good on its own, but I feel that the story is brought out in its fullest by the unique pencil/sketch art that the game is known for. It's a style that has the power to be very comforting and welcoming when it wants to, and genuinely disturbing when it needs to. Gameplay The gameplay is your standard turn-based RPG fare, and should feel right at home if you've had prior experience playing games like Final Fantasy or Persona. The game should take you around 20-30 hours to complete if you're going for the main route, longer if you decide to go for full completionism like I did. As far as combat, the main innovation this game provides is with the emotion system. This system involves the infliction of emotions on characters, revolving around three main emotions, sad, angry, and happy. These provide their own distinct buffs and debuffs, but more importantly revolves around a rock-paper-scissors paradigm where each emotion compliments another (e.g. sad is weak to angry). The combat can be easy if you're used to RPGs, but you'll need to make regular use of the emotions for later boss battles or if you go after optional content. Otherwise, the gameplay serves as a compliment to the real standout of the game - the story. Story The story of OMORI is one of the few stories that has managed to push me to the verge of tears. It is ultimately a game about trauma, forgiveness, and exploring just how twisted and disturbing the human psyche can become. This should especially resonate with you if you've ever dealt with mental health issues like depression or anxiety, if you are capable of exploring these themes directly. The game presents a cheery exterior on the screenshots above, but this facade unravels as you play the game and discover its secrets. The horror of OMORI does not lie in things that make you jump out of your seat and be startled - but from this facade hiding an innate darkness that you yourself may have inflicted upon even yourself at some point. Remarkably in that sense, this is a game where the story is formed before you even start a new game; it simply lies on you to uncover that story. A great strength of the narrative also lies in its characters; these are well written human characters that you can relate to, and will develop an emotional connection to. You'll care about their wellbeing and want them to succeed - which makes it all the more painful when the story plays out in the way it does. The last thing I have to say about the story is that it continues to ramp up all the way to end, and that you're going to think that you've hit the climax multiple times. Make no mistake, it's gonna keep on giving. Conclusion Ultimately, OMORI is a game that taught me about confronting emotions. It may be difficult and drive us to our breaking point; but we must do it not just for our own sake, but for the sake of our friends and family as well. Only then can we overcome and persevere, and make a difference in our lives. On that note, I want to say to you, the reader, that you're never alone. If you're struggling, if you're sad and don't know where to go, reach out and get help. You owe it to yourself. If I could pay money to get the experience of playing this game for the first time again, I would. So if you've somehow managed to go the past five years of this game's release and still remain spoiler-free, you're in for an amazing experience if you start playing. It might seem slow at first, but once the game starts to hit its stride narratively, you'll find it hard to put the controller down. And if you're still reading this review, thinking about whether or not you want to buy it, stop thinking. Play it. Do it today. And remember: everything is going to be okay.

I don't think any other game has caused me to experience emotion the way this did. I've never been very good with words, so I'll just tell you to get it. I don't think I'll ever be the same person ever again. 10/10
