Loaded with superstitions that convinced me the Paper bride was a real story. Its not, but its a damn good one. I have enjoyed each one, and in a weird way they remind me of True Fear, but this series has a ton of lore about the superstitions and a village that is quite interesting, every story intersects. In the end this feels like a good series you waste a whole day on, like a binge day or all nighter with Netflix. At the heart of the game it is a point and click adventure/escape room but leans more toward the latter. The game has several chapters and in each you are moving around four to six rooms at max. There are no sparkles for areas of interest but it does have a good hint system that recharges in about 10 seconds, there is also a skip button in case a puzzle really stumps you. My only grumble is that the objects you interact with are in Chinese characters so unless you know what the character means you will be just coming up with something like "Hey its got a Z on top and T and I on the bottom with a line through the middle." There is also a lot of reading in the game when you click on book, which you will do a lot of since these are the backbone to the story. The books usually describes an event/superstition but it also mixes the puzzle solution in the words, making the read more interesting. The game takes about four to six hours to complete. A few of these games I finished in a single sitting because I enjoyed the characters, the mystery, the story, the horror, and the voice overs.
Paper Bride is a decent point-and-click puzzle game; though a couple of the puzzles were pretty obscure. I played without using the in-game hint system and there were two puzzles that I had to look up in a guide (one of which still didn't make sense to me, but that's probably because I can't read Chinese). Anyhow, it's not bad; I liked it well enough, but I suspect I'm not the only one that has had trouble on some of the puzzles because of a language / culture barrier.
I definitely recommend playing Paper Bride! I actually first discovered it through the Identity V collab. Later, my boyfriend told me it was based on a real game and recommended that I play the original, and I’m really glad I did. The game was fun, and the story is incredibly interesting. It kept me hooked from start to finish, and I especially loved how it incorporates Chinese folklore and traditional customs into both the story and the puzzles. It made the atmosphere feel even more immersive and unique. There are a few minor language barriers since some puzzles use Chinese characters, but they’re easy to work around. The in-game hints are usually enough to help you figure things out, and if you know someone who can read Chinese, they can give you a hand if needed. It didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the game at all. If you enjoy horror games with puzzles, a great story, and folklore-inspired horror, I’d definitely recommend giving Paper Bride a try!
