Absolutly the best deduction game i'v played since Obra Dinn. This in comparison to: -Chants of Sennaar -Unheard: Voices of Crime -Case of the Golden Idol -Rise of the Golden Idol -No Case Should Remain Unsolved -A Case of Fraud -The Rootttrees are Dead -The Red Pearls of Borneo Somthing very mysterious happend at the old Galley house. A whole bunch of dead bodies where found, with no apparent explanation for why they where there, let alone what the hell happend. Enter Reya Beckon. She is to opporate a machine that has been set up in the Galley house living room that will allow her examine the various rooms of the Galley house during that bizzare time. The only catch? She can only observe a room at a certain time if she can correctly deduce everyone who was in that room at the time. So yes, very Obra Dinn. But not in a way that feels like a rip off. While the main chalange of Obra Dinn is to name everyone abord, the main chalange of Galley House is to figre out where everyone was duing any given time. For example; during TIME 4, ♥♥♥♥ Mc'gee will anounce he is going to the gararge. So you set the machine to show (GARARGE. TIME 5. ♥♥♥♥ Mc'gee) and you will be able to observe what happend next..... or not because there was somone else in the gararge aswell, or perhaps Mr Mc'gee didn't go to the gararge at all. This game is hard in the best way. Some info is given for free, but mostly it makes you feel clever for figuring things out. It even adresses some problems I had with Obra Dinn. It's much harder to brute force an answer and the ending was more satisfing.
I enjoyed most of my time with the game, but the reviews being rated as highly helpful built expectations that were not met by the game itself. The Incident at Galley House is a fun story to sit through, but the deduction is a lot less in your hands than something like Obra Dinn, Painscreek Killing, or Paradise Killer. It is an even farther cry from Outer Wilds in terms of how it goes about telling it's story. One is a non-linear sandbox full of exploration and mysteries and one is a visual novel with some great art and fun voice acting showing you through dialogue and sound how most of a mystery plays out. None of this (or what I am about to say) is a problem with the game itself, but discourse around such a niche genre becomes a larger issue when reviews aren't being entirely honest about what that genre is. This is a linear visual novel puzzle game with a mystery theme. Those puzzles are fun, satisfying even, but ultimately every AHA moment came from the game making something clear to me, and not me being given those pieces to put together. If you're not a fan of visual novels, but are here because people are calling back to Obra Dinn and other genre favorites in the reviews, do not be misled. This is a LINEAR PUZZLE GAME, and NOT a game about true logical deduction. If you're down to experience that, ABSOLUTELY pick it up. You won't be disappointed, but it's much more Sexy Brutale puzzle by puzzle sort of experience than a more wide open mystery like Paradise or Painscreek.
Great game, definitely a very high recommendation for all fans of the genre. The mistery is intriguing and you can deduce logically how everything unfolds, resulting in a very satisfying experience. Special note to the voice acting, which was a real surprise and it really helped with the atmosphere and immersion. Awesome job there! I played it all on the Steam Deck and can confirm that it was flawless.
Fantastic game, I enjoyed every second of it, and even after getting all achievements I was very sad that it was over. If you like deduction games, get this. The Story (no spoilers) You arrive at an abandoned house, alone. A newspaper article tells you about a number of deaths that occured here, and that were never solved. You set up a mysterious machine that allows you to see glimpses of the past. Will you be able to find out what happened here? Gameplay The game throws you directly into the deep water. Figuring out how the machine works is already part of the game, do yourself a favor and do not look anything up! You have all the assets you need in game: You can review scenes and dialogue from which ever point you choose. There's a place for your own notes that you can open while a scene or dialogue is running, and by default setting, it stops the scene, and restarts the scene when you close it. There's a search function, a highlight function, a hint system if you get stuck, everything you could wish for. This is how it should be done. The game has a windowed mode, lets you control the resolution and UI size, and provides all the sound sliders you might want. Highly recommended.
Good game. Great voice acting and dialogue writing. It has lots of fun and challenging logical deductions to figure out who is who and where everyone is while piecing together the timeline. However, I personally found the ending to be wholly unsatisfying but I can't explain why without spoiling the whole story. I feel like I put together a series of events but I didn't really get to the bottom of the mystery. Still recommend for detective game enjoyers but man I feel let down by the end. Edit: typos
