I really really liked the progression mechanics of this game. Unlike the Roottrees game, I never once had to turn to the Internet for help and it genuinely has all the narrative needed to solve the game within the game itself, which is one of those things that often comes up as a problem for the deduction game genre when players get stuck. I also never once needed to use the tip system. Based on some of the reviews I've seen on here, however, the play times seem to indicate at least a handful of reviewers definitely spammed the tips button (or played the previous version of the game), which kind of tells me you might be ruining some of the fun if you do so. You should easily get 10 hours of play time out of this as a new player, which is pretty awesome length-wise for these kinds of games. My only minor gripe with the game is that during a particular second phase, a lot of manual "brute forcing" is required to progress. The game attempts to hint at this with some comments directed to the protagonist, but I honestly think the exact phrase "brute force" needs to be used within the narrative to make it exceptionally clear, as up to that point, no requirement to do so was really necessary. It's one of those things that seems obvious in hindsight, but up till that point in the game I was taking my time and really reading the transcripts and working out the exact placement of the characters based on transcripts, so that sudden shift in mechanical play was a bit jarring. I felt kind of helpless till I realized that what I had considered "cheating" up to that point was actually kind of an intended methodology to get started in that second phase. In any event, sorry for the semi-cryptic review, but I did wholly enjoy the game and would love to see a sequel or something very much in the same line as this. The game mechanics for this venture is a really unique and superb idea that should be replicated in at least some future deduction-style games for sure. It's a great way to progress when you have a system that signals what DOES NOT work as much as what DOES.

If you enjoyed Return of the Obra Dinn, but are sad you'll never get to experience it for the first time again you should really get this game. The mystery was delicious, the story was convoluted but very followable, the voice acting was incredible and characters were strong. The writing, and specifically how the characters react when people start to die, deserves special shoutout. Can't praise this game enough, you should get it if you enjoy a good mystery.

Loved "The Roottrees are dead" - this is a very different offering but loving it so far. The game runs brilliantly on my PC but then I've got a pretty decent PC. Sadly my brain isn't quite up to the same speed but the first hour has been great. Also ran it on my Steamdeck without issues. Had to give my brain a rest after an hour in but enjoying it so far and looking forward to solving everything! Well done Evil Trout team!

This is a must play game for people who enjoyed Obra Dinn / Golden Idol. Type Help introduced a new detective mechanic that I had never seen before similar to how I'd never seen a game collect words in inventory until G. I. The devs discord channel is amazing and continues to be my secret source of unheralded detective puzzles games.
