Masterclass Puzzle Platformer I was looking for a good 2D Zelda-like game and and decided to get this on sale after learning that Mina the Hollower has Souls-like elements. Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo turned out to be the perfect alternative, and I was hooked almost immediately. The yoyo based combat and puzzle focused exploration are incredibly clever and well designed. Many of the puzzles are surprisingly challenging and may require you to chain together abilities or techniques you have or haven't learned yet. The game offers very little hand holding, leaving it up to you to decide which order to tackle each dungeon while discovering new moves, upgrades, and secrets hidden throughout the world. It's a rewarding experience that constantly encourages experimentation and exploration. Hopefully this hidden gem gets a sequel someday, although Pocket Trap seems to have gone radio silent and hasn't been responsive regarding future projects. If you're looking for a quality 2D Zelda-like adventure, Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo will not disappoint.
Pros: - Challenging gameplay with tight controls. - The yo-yo and the player's ability moveset feels unique. - Almost every screen has a puzzle that you have to use your abilities to solve. Feels rewarding. Cons: - Having the player drop coins on death and also making coins be the main progression resource is a bad combo and not fun. The player doesn't have enough health to make this feel fair. I set the coin lost on death to 0% in the accessibility options and had a much better time. The coin grind for progression is still pretty challenging even without coin lose on death.
The best Nintendo game Nintendo never made. Infuses the top-down Zelda formula with fresh new mechanics and uses them to great effect with incredible room and puzzle design. Great hidden secrets (some devious), a fun original world to explore (this city dethroned New Donk for me), and enough progression carrots to keep you motivated to complete every challenge and find every secret room exit. Played on Retroid Pocket 6, this game would be perfect on any capable handheld device. Steam time is inaccurate as I played offline, I hit 100% completion with about 16 hours of IGT.
