Nov. 2025
I’ve played Quake 1–3 for years, but somehow never touched Quake 4 until 2025. And honestly? This game is criminally underrated. Played on PC (RTX 3080 Ti, 4K upscaled, M+K) using these mods: Sikkmod Lite, Quake 4 Tweaker, Assorted Fixes, Quake 4 Hi-Def, Impacts & Injury. These mods modernize the game completely — uncapped FPS, better lighting/shaders, HD textures, fixed bugs, improved blood/decals, FOV slider, the whole package. 🔥 The Game Released in 2005, developed by Raven with id Software, running on the Doom 3 (id Tech 4) engine. And YES — it absolutely feels like Doom 3’s cousin: the same moody lighting, heavy shadows, chunky sound design, and that dark sci-fi horror vibe. I love it. Combat is fast, fluid, old-school Quake goodness. Railgun is still god-tier. Dark Matter Gun literally fires a black hole. Movement has that classic “Quake/Doom glide” that modern shooters lost years ago. No health regen — you hunt for health kits and armor like real FPS gamers. Level design is mostly linear but fun, with lots of enemy variety. Some later battles let you bunny-hop around like a psycho, which feels amazing. 🧠 Story & Gore You play as Matthew Kane, invading the Strogg homeworld after Quake 2. Mid-game, you get captured and brutally Stroggified in one of the wildest sequences I’ve ever seen in an FPS. After that you move faster, hit harder, and look way more badass. This game isn’t afraid to be dark, gruesome, and weird. Human bodies being harvested, chopped, wired into machines… peak early-2000s sci-fi horror. Modern AAA would never. 👎 Weak Points NPC allies get in your way Vehicle/turret missions are boring filler Some bosses are either too easy or cheap Scoped sensitivity feels weird even after console tweaks None of these are deal breakers, but worth noting. ⭐ FINAL SCORE: 4/5 Not as iconic as Quake 1 or 2, but way better than 99% of modern shooters. Amazing atmosphere, great weapons, creative ideas, old-school difficulty, and that unbeatable Doom-3-era vibe. Play it with the lights off. Play it with mods. Play it if you miss when FPS games actually had soul. HIGHLY underrated.

Pretty generic campaign for a pretty simple FPS, but it was enjoyable and well produced.

A great shooter for it's time, and one of the best campaigns in the series. Lots of fun set pieces, clever placement of enemies, weapons that feel good and can be upgraded, Enemies have decent variety in mechanics and looks to keep fights fresh. Exploration is minimal but you can find bonus armor in some places. Lots of turret sections, which i found a little stale but they dont go on for too long. Gory level decorations and impressive views are fun to look at, even if levels can get a bit repetitive. Totally worthy of the name Quake

It's a pretty solid Quake 2 sequel, and i'm glad to see the Quake fan base has warmed up to it over the last twenty years. It is essentially Quake's equivalent of Doom 3 in that it's slightly slower paced with more of a "horror" element than the pure action of the previous titles, but it's certainly not a bad game.

A highly underrated Quake game with satisfying punchy gun play, a great atmosphere, and decent sci-fi story. Also plenty of body horror. Still worth checking out today.
