Tired of AAA games, tired of Souls clones that can't even get the feeling and pacing right. I'm looking for a simpler experience that doesn't sacrifice depth, glad to find it here. Edit: Now that I'm finished with the game and got all the achievements, I can confidently say that this is a fantastic game, it's a fantastic game if you see it for what it is and not for what you want it to be. I saw someone complaining about the game looking like a bad tech demo with how undetailed the environment is, which if you're judging this game based on how AAA looks you're missing the point. This is a gameplay focused game that offers a tight gameplay experience, not an interactive movie. If you want to look at the most cutting edge and detailed graphics why go here in the first place. If you're thinking about buying this game to play with your friends, I want you to keep in mind the kind of people you're playing with. The kind of people you're playing with will greatly, like I mean greatly change your first experience with the game. I first played with my friends that already had over 100 hours in the game, and I did not have fun. I couldn't keep up simply because of the knowledge gap, they have a better understanding of the map layout and everything while I don't. So when I die, I was never able to catch up. They got overpowered and have a ton of fun while I'm struggling to survive. Which ended up making me dismissed the game by "This game is not for me I guess." (Or "this shit fucking sucks" depending on what kind of person you're). But I decided to go back solo and really give the game a chance. I'm just gonna play and have fun, which is exactly what I did. I didn't care about the timer, I didn't care about playing fast, I didn't care if I die and I'm just gonna vibe. This time, I had fun, I really had fun and I got the satisfaction of "The Click" with the game. The game really just lets you play however you want, it asks you to be efficient, but you will naturally get more efficient the more time you play, so you don't have to be stressed out on playing efficiently. The pacing in this game is great, amazing even. I love this game, I didn't expect it would make it to my top 8 favorite games but I'm glad it did, I had an amazing time playing it. Also I wish that Eclipse 8 is an achievement, something called "King of Petrichor V, Beat the game on Eclipse 8 with every Survivor." I only did one Eclipse 8 win, simply because I don't think that it's worth it unless this is your number one favorite and you love it dearly. But having to play each Survivor 7 times before unlocking the difficulty just feels tedious, I would rather they just make it so you only need to get one Eclipse 8 win to unlock it for any other characters. But yea, give this game a try I promise you it's worth it, especially now that it's on discount.

This game has received a lot of bad publicity over the last couple of months due to the Seekers of the Storm DLC that was launched way before it was ever ready, but if you're new to the game, I'd still highly recommend playing Risk of Rain. Before the DLC, it was one of my all time favorite games ever; in fact I think it's one of the best rogue-like games I've ever played. It's been a few months into the bug-fixing and whatnot, and at the time of writing I think the game is about as stable as it was pre-DLC (with maybe a few more enemies clipping through walls). The original content and fun-factor is still there for new players, and survivors of the void is still a solid DLC for those who want to play more. If you get super into it like I have been, I still wouldn't purchase the seekers of the storm DLC just because they are going to be updating the added survivors and they'll probably continue to re-balance and re-work items since the game is still a bit too easy with seekers items enabled; give it a couple more months and wait for it to be fully baked, and in the mean-time there's still a whole lot of content to enjoy if you're a new player. The base game comes with almost every survivor (except for 5 spread across 2 DLCs), and they're all exceptionally fun to play. Base-game items and difficulty is generally very challenging; especially when you're a new player, it can be difficult to understand how to most effectively deal damage and heal but playing usually makes you get into the hang of it, and if you really want to get into the nuts and bolts of how to play well and beat higher difficulties (Eclipse 8), you can just look at the wiki to read about proc coefficients (basically the chance to proctor a chance based item off of an attack), but none of that is at all necessary to enjoy the fun of the game. Anyways, play Risk of Rain! It's cool and neat and I've sunk 400 hours into it so I'm pretty sure you'll get enough content to justify the money you'll spend on it!

After 800 hours and completing all achievements for this game, I feel like it's time to write this. You will hate this game, and then come to love it, and then hate it again, and then go back to loving it. You will go through every single emotion, every stage of grief, the highest of highs and lowest of lows playing this game, struggling at this game, and trying to improve at this game until it etches itself into you like the microplastics in your blood stream. And once it gets it grip on you, it won't let go. You're gonna keep coming back to this game. It won't matter why. Maybe you meshed well with similar games that allow for different play styles. Maybe you're too stubborn to let the game knock you down after losing, maybe it's because games have gotten too stale and that this is your last reliable source of pure, no nonsense gameplay. Even when you think you're done, you're not. Maybe there's a new update and you wanna take a gamble at how broken it is. Maybe one of your friends suggest you two play a run together like two crabs in a giant bucket. Maybe a mod releases that just let's you PLAY AS A TANK. I keep coming back to this game, more so than any other game I've played in my entire existence. Very rarely can a game like this feel as fresh on run 1 as it would on run 1000. I'm writing this after completing a monsoon Artificer run when most of my runs have been on rainstorm. That run in particular felt like one of the hardest challenges I've ever had to do, and vastly different from any of my autopilot huntress runs. I hate this game, and I love this game. I hate how this game has consumed me since I first game it an honest attempt at 4 years ago, yet I love how games like this can just exist. It's a game that will ruin slower paced games for you. It's a game with the potential of forming the strongest of bonds with other people. It's a game that will teach you how to get good at games. It's a game with a soundtrack made by someone who thinks he's the shit and has the evidence to back that up. It's a game that goes on sale for $8 that I put 800 hours in without even touching eclipse and having barely dipped my toes into modding. It's a game. Not a sad imitation of a movie Not a glorified storefront or slot machine (although gambling is still present) It's just pure, unrestricted fun
