Rogue State Revolution is a political strategy game that throws you into the uneasy leadership of Basenji, a fictional nation struggling to rebuild after years of instability. Developed by LRDGames, Inc. and published by Modern Wolf, it blends nation management, turn-based decision-making, light wargame elements, and roguelike structure into a surprisingly intricate experience. Rather than presenting a traditional grand-strategy sandbox, the game focuses on the tension between short-term survival and long-term vision. Every turn represents a month in office, and every decision carries political, economic, and social consequences that ripple across the nation’s provinces and factions. At the center of the game’s design is a cabinet of ministers, each with personal traits, loyalties, and ideological preferences. These ministers determine what actions you can take—whether investing in infrastructure, reforming policies, negotiating with foreign powers, or managing exports. Their cooperation is never guaranteed, and keeping them loyal without alienating other stakeholders becomes an ongoing balancing act. Basenji itself is fractured into provinces with distinct demographics, religious influences, resource pools, and levels of unrest. Some regions demand immediate attention; others hold strategic value for long-term growth. The constant tug-of-war among the country’s factions—religious groups, liberals, conservatives, the military, and foreign states—creates a dynamic political environment where stability is always fragile. One of the game’s standout features is its procedural generation. Each campaign reshuffles Basenji’s map, resource locations, and neighboring geopolitical powers, ensuring every attempt at governance feels new. This interlocks well with the roguelike structure: losing your presidency doesn’t mean the end of your playthrough so much as the start of a new attempt armed with lessons from past failures. Over multiple runs, you begin to recognize patterns in your ministers’ behavior, understand how demographic trends interact with policy choices, and map out economic systems that can sustain the nation beyond its early hardships. The replay value is one of the game’s greatest strengths, encouraging experimentation with different political paths—from reformist idealism to authoritarian efficiency. Despite its ambition, Rogue State Revolution maintains a tone that mixes earnest political struggle with tongue-in-cheek satire. FMV-style segments, exaggerated personalities, and humorous narrative touches soften what might otherwise feel like a dry managerial simulation. This blend doesn’t appeal to everyone—some players enjoy the levity, while others find it clashes with the gravity of internal rebellions, food shortages, and foreign incursions. Still, the writing gives the game a distinct voice, and its tendency to poke fun at political theater helps keep the experience lively even when the mechanics grow tense. The game does show rough edges, especially in its early difficulty curve. The first few campaigns can feel overwhelming as limited actions, tight budgets, and conflicting demands all converge at once. Without a clear understanding of how economic systems feed into stability, or how demographic shifts influence elections, it’s easy to lose control of Basenji within a few turns. Mid-game pacing can also falter once you achieve a degree of stability—the sense of crisis that defines the opening hours diminishes, and some turns become exercises in routine management rather than exciting political maneuvering. Players have also noted issues with micromanagement, particularly when juggling inspectors, employment allocation, or multi-step infrastructure upgrades. Visually and technically, Rogue State Revolution has a clean, stylized presentation that supports its gameplay but doesn’t strive for the polish of larger strategy titles. The interface is functional but occasionally cluttered, and while performance is generally stable, some users report small bugs or crashes. None of these issues are severe enough to overshadow the core experience, but they do reinforce that the game is an indie production aimed at a niche audience rather than a mainstream competitor to heavyweight political simulators. Ultimately, Rogue State Revolution succeeds through its mix of systemic depth, replayability, and political improvisation. It’s a compelling experience for players who enjoy juggling competing priorities, managing unpredictable ministers, and steering a fragile country through crisis after crisis. It rewards long-term planning but also demands adaptability when circumstances shift unexpectedly. Although its quirks, tonal choices, and pacing won’t land for everyone, it offers a unique take on political strategy rarely seen in the genre. For fans of management sims and nation-building games who enjoy a challenge wrapped in satire and unpredictability, this title is well worth exploring. Rating: 7/10

Congrats, you're suddenly the dictator of a middle-eastern -stan country. Just what you always wanted, right? You've got a lot of problems, many realistic and some complete fantasy. It's actually an intriguing balance of fiction and realism. The game is generally well done, though there are some graphical glitches. Helicopters tend to throw big waves of black polygons up, and when you look closely at units like tanks, they're sometimes floating polygon collections. The music and sound invoke the middle east. They change up enough to not get stuck in your head. The map is ok. The videos are cute. The jokes are funny (a country with a chicken dictator, anyone?) but also close enough to home to make one think. You have to balance developing a country with a history of violence and racism and getting stuck between three superpowers. Your people all want different things, and the only way to please them all is to pump money into development of the country without bucking any of said superpowers, but economics are tricky. Your cabinet members are all quirky. All in all, I found it refreshing, engaging, and fairly deep without being sanctimonious. I can recommend it at full price. 3.9 stars from 5.

the only game that lets you experience how it feels to have to deal with middle eastern politics as a middle eastern nation only in this game you will rule a broke nation with crybaby ministers that will throw a tantrum if you dont build a five star hotel in the most vile and dangerous place in you country meaning 10 (a lot) whole workers now contribute to nothing insted of bauxite production or something usefull. also you have to deal with a little problem ethnic minority and its your job to make sure that they wont get genocided by your people again and also try to pass any bill without making liberals and conservatives hate you the game itself is a bit janky but i still think its realy good also i LOVE the semi improvised cutscenes i think you realy nailed it with this one 8/10

Thank you for making a game like this. More games should try to do what this game does. There is no one else really like it. You are a new president leading a nation after a civil war. Your nation has several regions and cities. Several culture groups and peoples with different needs. Get your economy up and running is the first priority. First with power distribution and then fixing up the country side. I say that no other game is really like this, the only one close is perhaps tropico. So think tropico but with many cities instead of one, with neighbours, many more laws, a national budget, a (partial) market economy and without any silly hats, lamas and bad jokes. The game is; Political with laws, factions and representatives. Strategic with military units, some fog of war and placement of military buildings. Has economic management, with more laws, recources, production, budget management and power distribution. Has development, with building construction, spanning over several different areas. You can also dabble with relious activity, tourism, some diplomacy and espionage. Nothing is really lacking but perhaps some areas could be added to, for even more content. Like when a war breaks out with a neighbouring country some border areas could be conquered (fought over). The only thing that is not really balanced are the diplomatic missions (demands). When a neighbor or a world power demands something of you some of these missions are close to impossible to fulfill. Perhaps that is realistic, I do not know. But balancing good diplomatic realationships is, for me atleast, very hard. I hope that more games tries create games like this. a game without magic, childish graphics, vampires, zombies and bad jokes. To do a game with graphics good enough that you actually can see things and then just go all out on content in ALL areas. Thank you for showing how a game can be made
