Even though this might not be the best game of its decade, I'll give respect to the developers for modernizing it for advancing technology rather than abandoning it to time. While it still lacks a proper windowed fullscreen option, it at least honors numerous monitor resolutions which makes it playable here on Steam despite other flaws like clunky mouse movement for aiming your weaponry. Many other older video games, some of which are actually slightly newer than this one in that those released in the early 2000s, are unplayable without spending hours tweaking files or downloading community patches. This "redux" is not perfect but it's serviceable. I doubt it'll be appealing to the mainstream due to its age and it being the true definition of what is now known as the 'boomer shooter.' But I think it's important to pay homage to the roots of video gaming. Shadow Warrior was one of the first of its kind and competed against the greats of that era like DOOM and Half-Life . It had to try and be different, which it does by offering humor and a protagonist that isn't silent, many of his quips going unnoticed if you aren't pressing the E button on literally everything you see, as back in the day, developers created substance with obsolete technology by making everything an interactable object. This also might be the very first video game in history that has you play a stereotypical Asian dude written by people who weren't yet brainwashed into the ideology of social justice and political correctness, those guys long retired from the industry by now and replaced by the otherwise incompetent, as there's even a map that shows a number of nude (but conveniently censored) women back when female characters in video gaming were actually attractive to look at. It's a game that combines unapologetic humor with brutality and viscera where you watch your enemies slowly slop down from being sliced in half with the katana and is very detailed in that regard. It's interesting to see the difference between the gore of classic video games compared to modern video games now, and is something that I think is sorely missing. These are the games that new-aged gamers crave when it comes to modern gaming lacking a sufficient challenge where developers like FromSoftware have come in to fill that void. The games of this era lack the yellow tape that directs you towards where to go. It doesn't hold your hand with tips and hints that pop-up on the middle of your screen whenever you inevitably get lost. There's no automatic save points and so you have to remember to manually save otherwise if you die, you restart from the beginning of the level. You're going to have to find hidden walls that you open with the 'use' keybind, which is E by default on the keyboard, and finding these walls is how you often progress to the next area of the map. You'll have to pay attention to details, where everything is deliberately designed to lead you forward. If you see a crack in the wall, it's probably cracked to indicate you can blow it up. People who did not play video games of this age may struggle to solve these puzzles as these video games are designed so differently from how video games are now. The core gameplay loop, aside from just shooting demons, is to go around and collect different colored keys to unlock doors to locked areas of the map. One key basically leads to another key which leads to another which leads to the completion of that map. Each map has a few secrets to try and discover, another common design choice of these older games, where it is often containing a weapon, ammo, and health pack. The map design, at least when it comes to the base game, is a bit questionable at times. Especially the final chapter of the game. It is perhaps indicative of inexperienced developers or developers just doing what they can with what they have. Enemy variety is lackluster as well, and some of them are very annoying like the ghouls that fly around and the hornets that are seemingly impossible to aim and shoot at given how terrible the mouse movement is in this redux edition. I had to opt to using the rocket launcher's splash damage to squash those evil bees. It isn't as obnoxious as Serious Sam , though, where those developers seemed to have the intent to troll you at every corner. The story itself is delivered from a "show, don't tell" perspective and requires the player to use context clues to figure it out. This is also common of these older games where you just didn't have the option to include narration. Shadow Warrior has you playing a corporate shogun in a futuristic version of Japan that was as best as it can be imagined back in the '90s using limited tools that developers were given, and this version of the game also includes the two expansion packs which adds some extra content to an otherwise short campaign where it only has like five missions otherwise. The expansion packs are much better than the original campaign and show some improvement and experience from the development team. While I'd recommend the game, I still believe it should probably be cheaper at like $5 USD. The remastered visuals does help with modernizing the video game, but just barely, as you can still tell the game is decades old and it won't hold up to scrutiny when compared to many other FPS games, both old and new. Respectably, the original version of this game is actually free to play on Steam but I don't trust that it'll work for most modern setups given my experience with other older titles still available here on Steam. I can respect the developers for making the original game a freebie, as many other older titles of this generation are basically scams because it just doesn't launch or will constantly crash to desktop while costing at least $10 USD. This version at least works.

The game could’ve been so much better if most of the levels didn’t require you to find a secret in order to progress. On some levels, I’d get stuck and end up having to look up gameplay videos just to find the location of a secret wall, lever, painting, etc. It really kills the pacing after a while.
