Finally a semi-Metroidvania for me. Awesome, intuitive moves, and not too complicated to pull off. The difficulty is tough in several parts, but never unfair. It ticks you off just enough to make you want to keep trying again. Same goes for the challenge rooms. And the best part: You can 100% each level (after getting all the necessary upgrades, of course) without ever having to look up a walkthrough. While each level is mostly linear, branching sections are not too convoluted. You can easily find your way to the mid- and final bosses, while picking up 'secrets' along the way. Great game, absolutely done right!

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance (SAV) is a great game. There’s some definite flaws but they’re relatively easy to overlook. The two biggest features are the visuals and the gameplay. Art of Style SAV follows Lizardcube games' trend of using "hand-drawn-look" artwork for its visual style (look at that store page!). To say it’s beautiful is an understatement. Excellent use of color, character animations are fluid and dynamic, backgrounds are interesting and varied, effects pop and add to their weight/feel onscreen. Visual queues are clear and concise, and it’s *usually* pretty easy to identify everything on the screen. SAV punches well above its weight in this area. This is some of the best 2D animation I’ve seen in a video game and even surpasses Lizardcube’s last big title Streets of Rage 4 in this department. Hand-drawn-looking-artwork is expensive and time consuming to make (at least it was - looking at you AI), and the quality on display here is remarkable and almost worth playing the game for alone. Drawbacks are a lack of ultrawide support at launch, but as an UW user I don’t feel like that’s much of a detraction here. Regarding the “clear and concise” effects onscreen, this can become less so during huge fights and you can get lost in the mix (there are skills to deal with that when it happens). Combat Seeking Perfection Saying the gameplay is excellent almost feels modest. Lizardcube again nails the weighty feel of combat – combining what feel like fighting game elements to give you a variety of tools and options that offer many possibilities. Additionally, SAV introduces the “Ninpo” system, which allows you to equip one of 8 different special attacks. These can vary from breathing fire, parrying and countering an attack, or summoning a serpent to attack your opponent. Ninpo is charged natively by attacking your enemies and is intended to be used with relative frequency, sort of like meter in a fighting game. There is also a "Ninjitsu" charged attack sort of serving as a Super or Ultimate that charges as you take damage. Fans of previous Shinobi games should be familiar with these - most of them return from previous games. Animations and attacks feel weighty and are accompanied by visual queues – enemies getting knocked down or interrupted, bass-heavy contact sounds, etc. When an enemy is about to strike there’s usually a short indicator giving you a quick warning. Controls are very responsive and feel great, but there are a lot of buttons. I personally like that - but some may not, and it could come off as overly complex. Between jumping, dashing, 2 attack buttons, a button for Kunai, a button for Ninpo that converts face buttons to 1 of 4 selected Ninpo attacks, and several dedicated traversal buttons.... it can get to be a lot. When there is a lot going on with multiple enemies it can be disorienting, and the game certainly punishes button mashing with recovery frames on Joe’s attacks. However, combat is not usually very difficult due to Joe’s overwhelming options. If anything, I feel the game could have done more to push the player harder – especially in the optional content it does offer. The Journey Level design is generally good. Lots of verticality and some platforming – none of which is ever very challenging save a few secret areas. Despite some confusion the game is not a Metroid-style game. Levels are grouped into 3 sets of 3 – capped by an intro level and a final stage. Levels can be replayed and they are littered with secrets. If you’ve ever played the NES Strider game from ancient times – level progression is similar to that. Secrets are a big part of each level. With 1 or 2 exceptions I was able to find them all without a guide – they’re pretty easy to locate with the minimap. They generally feel rewarding and definitely scale your power as you find more. From permanent resource boosts to amulets that grant passive powers, it was fun finding new toys to try out. Several levels feature areas that are inaccessible the first time you play them and will have to be revisited later. A bit of padding in terms of length, but thanks to a good fast-travel system it never feels really tedious. The Road To Vengeance is Short The game can be completed in less than 10 hours, and that’s playing at a relatively thorough pace. There’s not an additional difficulty mode. Instead, the game offers a scored arcade mode for each stage along with a boss rush and unlockable secret boss to fight. If you’re not interested in perfecting your score and grinding out levels to improve, there is pretty sparse content for endgame. And since the campaign is relatively short without additional difficulty levels replayability may be a serious issue for some players. I will say playing through it I wanted more when it was over. Even just a higher difficulty level would have been welcomed. The game does feel very short. I am one of those players who will work on arcade mode, but I’m looking forward to Lizardcube hopefully releasing more content. Katana’s Out Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is a definite buy for me so long as you’re ok with a shorter game. I think the asking price is well worth the quality you get from the visuals and gameplay alone even in the quantity that’s currently there. However, I do really hope the game gets a good chunk of post-release content down the road.

After playing for several hours, I can confidently say that Sega is back. I’ve completed The Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3 on the Sega Mega Drive, as well as GG Shinobi 1 and 2 on the Sega Game Gear. This new version of Shinobi incorporates elements from all its predecessors. It features action, skill-based gameplay, and puzzles, much like the Game Gear version where you had to revisit levels after acquiring new skills to uncover hidden treasures. Thanks to Yuzo Koshiro, the music turned out quite well, though not quite as good as in the originals. Does anyone remember the Chinatown music from The Revenge of Shinobi? Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anything quite like it here. Still, it’s a fantastic game, and I hope it’s successful enough to encourage Sega to release more remakes. Imagine seeing classics like Nights into Dreams, Last Bronx, or Golden Axe get the same treatment. Let’s hope we get to experience those gems as well!

Great game so far. Massive combat depth, incredibly responsive controls, Yuzo Koshiro bangers, and stellar 2D art and animation. I grew up on the Genesis Shinobi games, and this is exactly what I want from a 2025 sequel. It retains the spirit of the original while making the moment to moment enemy encounters engaging. Oh, and importantly, unlike many 2D games (Shredder's Revenge, etc.), you can run it at an uncapped framerate. Moving around and slashing feels buttery smooth. Big props to the devs for that.
