While the developer went under, they did make a complete experience in this before then, its obvious to me they did want to do more with it, but they tied it off into a finished product still. The game wont last you a long time so you may want to wait for a discount before getting it. However, what's here is a pleasant and just fun experience, also completely family friendly for those that care about that.

Two paws up! I have not played a platformer since the Nintendo 64 days. The idea behind this game interested me as I enjoy being around squirrels at my local park or when hiking on nature trails. Squirrels are very playful, energetic, curious creatures that are interesting to watch and fun to be around. I wanted to play a game where you play as a squirrel exploring their surroundings. This game lets you do just that. Squirrled Away is an enjoyable colorful game full of cute likable characters and cozy locations. The game lets you progress at your own speed while completing quests from other squirrels. You will be leaping from tree to tree as you forge for items and explore an ideal sunny park. You will also craft new tools to help you progress. Fans of base building will enjoy how much you can upgrade your home nest in this game. The music is nice and soothing and fits the games relaxing atmosphere. I wish I could find the soundtrack available outside the game because I liked listening to it in-game. The game also features an online coop mode so you can enjoy the game with others. Overall if you want to play a relaxing stress-free game or just love squirrels (Or both!) this is the game for you. Endless summer days of adventure await!

How and why did you addict me to this? Seriously? It's cute enough and relaxing enough to just get slowly absorbed into the characters and mechanics. The mechanics also being super relaxed. I actually quite enjoy it. The environment is adorable as well: - This game is a crafting game taking focus on having unlimited tool use - This game focuses on climbing, running around, (and eventually gliding) through area's - The game invites building multiple tree houses and gives you many area's to build them throughout the game - The game has a multitude of quests across many characters (Predominantly squirrels) Mostly fetch quests and some other unique ones - The game area's have a collectible and side task (Golden Acorns and Food Storage's) to give the player a reward for each area But there are some things I wish for, as odd as it sounds: I want area's that go further into the city/town and suburbia. I'd also love the ability to go out at night or day, and have an appropriate day/night cycle and even a weather cycle if plausible. Or be able to set this information at the bed the player puts down and uses. That being a general "what will tomorrow be like?" and having the player set that information "Rain, Night" etc, thus giving the player full control on the environment/weather/quests to do and characters to interact with I feel this would explode the ability to re-investigate maps in a different perspective, but give the developers a chance to play with many other types of wild-life characters, such as Bats and other nocturnal creatures, and give more quest exploration based on the environment conditions of the players choosing. This could make previous area's be re-used with more quests and characters to explore and interact with. I also feel adding things like Mice and Rats, Badgers, Opossums, Raccoons and even communicative birds (Such as Robins, Chikadee's, Owls and Ducks) and even insects could vastly expand the types of quests to explore and how unique the challenges could become. I feel there could even be a whole avenue of less then savory critters to explore without the need of 'combat'. (Not that the game actually has any whatsoever and I feel that's a great thing) I feel this could also add for unique interactions or characters (Such as needing to help a pet, like a snake or a ferret ((IE a predator)) or creatures such as insects or even things like Spiders and other such things.) and with that give the development team plenty of extended resources to really explore many quests and puzzles. I'd also love to have NPC squirrels be invited at your properties, further instigating the idea of making more lavish tree houses for nothing more but the sake of making the tree houses more lively. (But I play single player, and just really like how the squirrels have been presented in the game in terms of animation and all around character - it makes me wish for further exploration of that, much like you see in a game like Moss.) I am unsure if there is an intended road-map for the game, or if the game is fully finished as of this date. -- I also feel that a key thing to add would be a couch co op (If this is even possible). That way a parent could play with a child. Since I even like the game (Being nearly thirty) that dynamic is a solid thing and I feel Local Co Op could be something worth exploring if you have some parents in your discord/community that feel the game is good for their kids. In all honesty, I bought the game on sale and feel I should have paid in full. It's a great experience for the style of game it is, and a rather refreshing and very relaxed take on many other crafting games. I'm delighted I picked it up on sale and if there are intended updates in the future for the title - large ones - I'm thoroughly excited for what the team comes up with. There aren't many games that explore just 'being an animal' and even if this one adds much more then just 'being an animal' it's done so in a way that's thoroughly explored the core of what Squirrels do to make a relaxing title. I genuinely like that about the game and implore others to at least try the game.

Squirreled Away is almost a fantastic game and yet, nearly everything about it is slightly flawed. If for whatever reason you find yourself predisposed to like this game, you'll be fine. But if you're looking for Squirreled Away to win you over, you may be disappointed. Myself, I'm predisposed. As a casual birder I also watch and feed legions of squirrels. I top off the bird feeder every two or three days. Birds and squirrels? I'm a fan. Squirreled Away's graphics and art direction are charming; the environments are thoughtful and beautifully designed, and the world as a whole is a delight. The 'Squirrel Vision' ability is a well conceived invention and adds critical quality-of-life features by highlighting materials and objectives at a distance. Exploration is a lush and wondrous joy. But then there's also all this: Your inventory is always too full, your stamina is always too low, and anything you need is always too far away. It's fine and necessary to have limits, but these limits need tuning. You can't crack open a few walnuts without tapping out, and you probably have no room to carry them anyway. You can only craft with what's in your pockets, even if your chests are flush with inventory, forcing you to shuffle items back and forth (sometimes cross-country). Other games have recognized and fixed these tedious issues; why must we deal with them here? A critical--perhaps the critical--mechanic is the sheer pleasure of a squirrel's freedom of movement: hopping through grass, jumping streams, climbing branches, leaping from tree to tree. This game about nails it, and it's magical when it's working. But the magic is spoiled whenever your squirrel veers near the underside of a branch, causing a full-on wonk-fest of stuttering paralysis. This movement quirk isn't good, it's frequent, and it badly needs fixing. The game is almost cozy and casual, but there are several non-optional timed puzzles with minimal margins of error. Players without the requisite dexterity--many who will be attracted to Squirreled Away--will be frustrated and unable to finish the game. It's almost family friendly, but one of the squirrels swears about his problems. Sure, it's mild compared to the average game or film, but it's juvenile and out of place here. Likewise, the dog could impede your progress by affectionate licking instead of aggressive biting. Clearly this is minor and in no way a deal-breaker, but I bring it up as another example of the overarching inconsistencies that plague the game. Aside from the environment, just about everything else misses the mark by some margin. Most of this could be fixed by twisting a few knobs and pulling a few levers, but as of this writing Squirreled Away needs some adjustments to take it from average to great. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely, and I'm looking forward to more from this developer. Will others enjoy it? In its current state, a recommendation requires major caveats. I'm afraid its flaws will hamper its broader success, which is a shame.
