i heard about this game on a good youtube series called steam dumpster diving. i watched a review, and i read the steam reviews. a lot of negativity ( while having a "mostly positive" rating) just beat the game and reread the steam reviews. a lot of what people are saying is true, but i enjoyed my time with it. excellent story concept (even if i skipped past a lot of dialogue) aegis is a cool charecter. the weapons are all cool and multi functional, attack animations are cool enemies are well designed (aestetically, if not mechanically) the world is decent looking (beautiful at times), so are other charecters. the last area in particular, is gorgeous wasn't too long to the point where i was like "i just want this to end" as i have felt from a few games lately (though it was getting close to that. there was a part where it was like "you can't turn back" and i thought it was near the end but there was a few hours more) a lot of the comments said the developers were lazy and that is one thing i can not agree on. this game may not be polished, have the best graphics, mechanics, story, etc. but it's clear to me they put a lot of effort into this game, i don't know how anyone else doesn't see that it would be a shame if people passed it up because people say there wasn't care put into it and people complaining about performance? i ran 4k, ultra settings (except not highest textures, they took too long to load) on a 4070 super with a 5600x and 16gb ram on an ssd, and it ran completely fine. i had 3 instances of getting stuck, which other people mentioned. a hald dozen or so minor graphical glitches, finicky enemy lock on, and picking up items but the glowing item on the ground would linger. other than that, it was fine. the one major complaint i have is that the load times between stage transitions are quite long if you see it on sale, get it. it's worth it

Steelrising is an interesting game. I would place it as a solid 7/10; overall enjoyable, but extremely derivative. It's very, VERY hard to not compare it to many other games that all do aspects of this game better, but the final result is a perfectly playable experience. If you like souls-likes, you'll have a good time. If you like robots, you'll have a good time. To start with the good, the best part of this game is the accessibility features. There's lots of options, my favorite of which is the option to "keep souls on death", which is a feature I often find myself modding into my favorite souls-likes anyway. The difficulty isn't too bad though, so you might not even need it, even if you are new to the genre. The enemy design is fantastic, and I genuinely had a lot of fun with ALL of the story bosses, even the ones I struggled with due to my preferred weapon type. The voice acting is overall good, and the graphics are fine. Some of the later areas genuinely do look very beautiful. The level design gets better as the game goes on, starting a bit weak in my opinion and getting more complex from there. I also like the different options you can customize your Aegis with, even if I think most of the hair styles look very silly. The combat is fine. The mechanic of overheating can be a bit harsh, but you learn to deal with it and it becomes just another thing to consider when thinking up tactics. The platforming isn't too bad, and the grappling hook is fun to use once you get the hang of it. I didn't use it much during combat, so I can't speak to that function. There's certainly a lot of weapon options, and I got used to the swords pretty quickly and just used them throughout the game. You can absolutely power through the game while upgrading only aggressive stats-- I only touched power and agility and was fine. As for stuff that I didn't like... The plot was a mess. I did a lot of the sidequests, but I still found the main quest confusing and leaving too much up to what I'm going to call "external player research". While audio logs/messages are a fantastic tool to fill a player in on quest hints, lore, and other tidbits, I don't think the main quest should hinge on the player reading something unless it is directly waved in front of their face. I read most of them, and they were... fine. But they weren't the most interesting thing ever, and I often forgot to give them a peak in the heat of battle. There must have been info in there that I missed, because there were a lot of lore-drop cutscenes where I could glean what was happening from context clues, but the plot threads felt as though they were coming out of nowhere. A lot of "necessary" information is missable. Also... there are games that just do all factors of the plot a bit better. French revolution alternate history? I can think of at least a handful-- I played Banner of the Maid over the summer, and I would consider that comparable. The robots are people (ish) the whole time? Try Lobotomy Corporation, or maybe Portal 2 if you've somehow avoided playing that. The general vibes of the game are CLEARED by Nier Automata if you're craving a robo-centric story with a female lead. And I don't dare compare it to Lies of P for its own sake. There are better games. But if you've already played those games, give Steelrising a try. Something something holy shit two cakes.

TLDR; accessible souslike veteran will find easy to exploit and newcomers will welcome; interesting arsenal; combat system has some flaws, but nothing too annoying; game is beautiful, but too dark and hard to read sometimes; story has some surprises and will interest history buffs, but that's about it; audio bugs in cutscenes; and I'll leave it at that. Sometimes it's good to play a game that isn't a masterpiece, a game whose ambition is a little further than its reach. This is true for Steelrising in a number of aspects, from gameplay to graphics to writing, but for me the good far outweights the bad, though the rough edges can be annoying at times. This is an accessible soulslike, so if you usually avoid this type of game because of its difficulty this can be a good entry point. The base gameplay is accomodating enough if you build your character properly, but there are difficulty options to tailor your experience. For souslike veterans this might be too easy to exploit, while at the same time the combat system has some flaws or quirks that will irk some. For example, you can't cancel attacks, which leads to mistimings and taking unnecessary damage. The iframes (the microseconds your character is invulnerable while dodging) are a bit tight and I found them unrealiable. Enemy attacks have an insane amount of tracking and there are plenty of 360 attacks and other long-winded attacks to punish easger players or those that dodge a bit too much. There are interesting weapons to choose, with some weird choices in the combat design. For example, blocking and parrying are weapon skills and not something you can do with any weapon. Faster weapons are better at stunning enemies which sounds counterintuitive. I ran a build based on immobilizing enemies, which not only did massive damage, but also healed me and could restore my stamina. Speaking of stamina, there's a nice mechanic where you can 'timed reload' your stamina bar, allowing for more aggressiveness or that save when you accidently dodge yourself out of stamina. The design of the enemies and bosses is inspired, visually at least, but there's not a lot of enemy variety. The game looks beautiful and has some nice skyboxes, but is often too dark or has a limited palette. This can make reading enemy movements a bit hard to read. I had a bug with the audio on cutscenes where the dialogue was dismally low and I had to go by the subtitles. The dialogue itself isn't anything extraordinaire, but for history buffs like me who love the period of the French revolution it's great to see so many characters of the time. The story has some very obvious points you can see 15 hours in advance, but it also goes some places I didn't expect at the start. You can even make some choices in a few quests, but don't expect anything close to Baldur's Gate 3 consequences. I'll leave it at that.

Well here we go with another classic Spiders release. * Bugs!! Lots of them!!! * Jank!! Lots of it!! * Weird crazy world? * Incredible levels of soul * Fun when it works * Cut and paste assets everywhere * Long maps for no reason * Insane story * Gameplay that gets in its own way * Will make RPG players angry Yep, it's a Spiders game. It's their take on the Souls formula. It's fun, it's cool, it's inexcusably broken. If you like this genre, it's worth a try. If you know what to expect from this studio, I'd say this is one of their best games. But for the average gamer, just know this is some low budget gaming and it will be a fast alt-f4 for a lot of people

Is it good? Yes. Is it great? No. • If you can power through the beginning and its boss you'll quickly find different weapons to mess around with. Get comfy with one of them and you'll breeze through any boss. • The combat is hard to describe. It feels clunky until you get a good feel for it. Then it starts feeling really good if not a little weightless. • Cutscenes are less than stellar and can glitch out in multiple ways. One of the final cutscenes made me burst into laughter when an important character slid in a static position from outside of the camera into a coffin on screen. • There are 10 different basic enemies, each with about 3 variants that do elemental damage, is bigger, or explodes. • Bosses range from regular enemies that glow and just have more health to the unique titans that are easily the best part of them game. • There's a lot to explore.
