Overall a fun little puzzle game with some room for QoL improvements. The core gameplay loop is engaging and not having any overarching time limit gives it a semi-cozy vibe despite the story/setting. None of the puzzles felt punishing and the pace was nice, with most solutions being pretty intuitive. My only real gripe is that the only way to achieve the multiple endings is to reload from the end-branching day and play the whole game over from that point, which is an absolute slog for a one-time solve puzzle game. Would be nice if once you solved everything you could go down the branching paths with everything labelled/solved just to see the endings. There also should really be a sort/look-up feature for things you have labelled. Otherwise an enjoyable experience that doesn't overstay it's welcome.

Strange Horticulture was my GOTY 2022. I don't know what happened to my original review, or if I even wrote one in the first place, but here we are. Strange Horticulture is a lovecraftian (or chambersian) deduction game that puts you in the shoes of the titular horticulture, and to tend to your clients' needs, you'll have to identify plants using context clues, textbooks and esoteric tools. The same goes for finding the plants in the first place. Some of the plants have effects that, when given to the right or wrong person, will affect the story. The gameplay loop is meditative, relaxingly immersive and life threatening in its capabilities to fully absorb you and grasp at the edges of your mind. You decide when to open the shop, when to venture out to find more plants and solve puzzles, when in need of more energy you are also free to water your dearies and regain some, and you can also pet your feline friend. Rearrange the plants also, try to have them displayed by color or name, but don't take it personally if they, well, prefer other locations. Once I started playing, other games ceased to exist. That deduction itch was finally scratched like very little pieces of media have offered, because Strange Horticulture respects you as a being capable of thought. It's not overly difficult, and it doesn't spew three quarters of options like Obraa Dinn (another 10/10 experience) does. Because it's not a 3D first person exploration game, instead feeling like a series of menus and submenus, it also won't make you dizzy if you happen to suffer from motion sickness. The different possible outcomes, consequences of your decisions, also make it heavily replayable. The setting, inviting in the tempting whispers of it dark tones and darker plots, makes for a wonderful world building experience. The writing is witty, the ambiance is moody, and the cat, the cat, the cat, my dearest Hellebore, is the most pleasant company. For 2022, and I'm not kidding, no other game compared. Really nice game! Beautiful (and less beautiful) flowers, a cute cat, mysterious people, a cult and a monster, lots of puzzles to solve where you're either looking for a point on the map or the right plant. Not too hard and I really had fun thumbing through the book again and again. I only wish the game was a bit longer - I left it to idle now and then, so I'm not sure about my actual playing time: 6 hours maybe or could be 7. That's quite okay, I'm not really complaing, I just wanted to go on for a bit longer. I will go back to it for additional achievements, otherwise one playthrough would be enough. So, yeah, I wish I could go on serving customers for example, having a longer epilogue than just one day. I liked the part where it's up to you to organize your desk and lable your plants. You're not forced to do it - which somehow made it even more rewarding to have everything nicely sorted. The only real complaint: the background music. Meh. But for the first part it was okay and then I just turned it off, so no problem. If you enjoy light puzzle games with nice handdrawn graphics and no timer, go for it!

Basically a text-based puzzle (actually more like riddle) game in an eldritch setting. Its main strength lies in the 2D art and animation, the mysterious world, and the botanic setting with 77 fictional but imaginative plants. As for the gameplay: * You advance the story by fulfilling requests of the customers. In 90% of the time, a specific plant is requested (and usually the system tells you its name straight away). All you have to do, is to go to the encyclopedia and find the description of this plant, then identify it on your shelves. Giving a wrong plant too many times will force you to go through a mini-game to resuscitate yourself, but otherwise has no persistent consequences. A built-in hint system is also available. * In the rest 10% of the time, you may choose between two options. There is no branching narrative, however: the story is completely linear; your choice only has influence on the eventual fate of your customer or endings available. * Plants are mostly fetched by deciphering cryptic messages left by your customers or the narrator and clicking on the correct locations on the map. The general concept and ideas are intriguing, but the gameplay gives you almost no agency, and it hardly varies from the start to the end. Personally, this monotonicity is the main downside of the game. Even worse, most plants are requested only once (some even never). You also do not get to be a real horticulturist who can decide what to recommend to your customer based on your own creativity. To conclude, I give a neutral recommendation (meh). The game can be for you, if you love plants, or you are mainly after the unique and strange world and do not mind repetitive gameplay, light puzzles, and cliché story. Bonus: you can pet a cat! PS: Potential buyers should note that this game has zero resource management or shop simulation element. Also, the game has an auto-save system that also serves as chapter selection, which makes it possible to complete all endings or achievements without replaying the whole game.

If you're looking for a cozy yet spooky puzzler, Strange Horticulture is it. The graphics are fantastic, the story is intriguing, and the puzzles require you to really use your noggin without being too hard. I loved running my own gloomy little plant shop and helping to solve a murder mystery along the way. Absolutely recommend!
