Strange Horticulture is a fine puzzle game, but I can only recommend it for those who are ready to read a lot of text and be ready to stop and think. I stumbled upon a Strange Horticulture at random: the description didn't really captivate me at first, but I liked the art style and reviews (very positive) gave a good impressions, so I got it. I was pleasantly surprised from the start and before I knew it, I was at the end. While the gameplay gets repetitive fast, I think that there's plenty of things to keep you occupied. I refrained from using any hints (this is, of course, purely a choice of the player) and sometimes had to really think about the solutions. Which, in my opinion, is only a good thing: I managed to figure the puzzles out without any help and it did what puzzle games do great: giving you a sense of satisfaction. Sure, most of the problems you solve are mundane by nature (you ARE a flower shop owner) but there is also the bigger puzzle on the background, which slowly progresses as you do the smaller ones. The game is dialogue heavy and do require attention and information management if you're willing to solve everything without hints. There is a log of the conversations (except once, towards the end of the game, when the conversation didn't get included on the log, but this is probably a bug), which came handy couple of times. Sadly, conversations aren't voice acted, which would have been a nice touch (also if you have someone to play with, you could always divide the roles and voice act yourself, if you're into that). The reading heaviness and the setting (or more specifically the time period) reminded me of Sunless Sea, to give a comparison if you're familiar with that. Summa summarum, I recommend Strange Horticulture for those who are looking for cozy puzzle solving, that flows with players pace and are willing to read a lot of text.
I started on Strange Horticulture before Christmas, and played it through the holidays. I'd been looking forward to it after reading good reviews, but was a little unsure how good a game based around running a plant shop could be. Well, the answer turned out to be very, very good indeed. I was totally hooked, played it three-quarters of the way through, then restarted it because I'd made a little mistake. I'd got overconfident as, coming from the North-west, I knew about Long Meg and her Sisters, and this caused me to miss a clue. But I also restarted because I wanted to keep playing it as long as possible. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. There is an eerie Lovecraftian sense of unease behind the game... and yes, you can deliberately poison one of your most annoying customers. I finished it some weeks ago, and have deliberately held back on trying the follow-up game, Strange Antiquities, as I wanted to save it to play during my birthday week. That is now coming up - can't wait. And to the guys at Bad Viking, if you are planning another similar game for the future (Strange Delicatessen?), don't hang about. This is my 73rd birthday and I want to be still here when it comes out! In a nutshell, ten out of ten. One of the best games I've played in over forty years of computer gaming.
Short game, but really great vibe and I got sucked into it like crazy. There's a lot of endings, so you can really play it quite a few times and get some fun outcomes-- my first playthrough took about 4 hours, and I'm definitely planning to do a few more. The puzzles were challenging enough without being completely infuriating, and all of the identifying of plants and solving puzzles felt intuitive and kept the gameplay loop fresh. Having no time limits was also a huge plus, and made the game all the more relaxing to play and think about. Can I also say THANK YOU to the developers for giving you a chance to identify all the plants even after getting an ending? Gameplay doesn't continue past a certain number of days, but you get a chance to go through and label every single plant and get that beautiful little checkmark on your plant book. I was stressing at the ending, since I had about 10 plants unidentified, but getting to go through and label them all was so healing. Thank you, from the bottom of my diagnosed-with-OCD heart. I feel like I can close the game and do a new run without feeling like the first one was unfinished.
