Dec. 2025
I played Stronghold Crusader as a kid, and I played the HD version before the re-release. Now I've played almost 300 hours of the DE version. I think all this gives me the right not only to write a comment but also to make a few suggestions for the developers. I don't think I need to prove that the game is wonderful. It's arguably the best game in the series, although, for example, the regular Stronghold DE has more beautiful landscapes. Broadleaf forests, green mountain slopes... very beautiful. And then... Suggestion #1: More diverse vegetation. Sorry, but the game has very sparse vegetation. The only trees are three types of palms and an olive tree. And this is in a game that takes place in a region with very diverse vegetation. The Judean Mountains and Galilee are home to endemic oaks, pines, cedars, acacias, sycamores, carobs, pistachios, and other beautiful trees... 1,000 years ago, dense, impenetrable forests flourished there. Galilee is still rich in forests today. The same is true for Asia Minor. I'd love to be able to experience these landscapes in-game. I can advise on this, if needed. I can provide photographs and drawings of the appropriate trees. I'm an artist and live in this region. Dynamic weather could also be added. But that's not so important. It's fine as is. Request #2: Walls 10 times stronger. The game has a feature called "Strong Walls"—it makes walls impenetrable to infantry. However, catapults and trebuchets can easily reduce almost any wall to rubble. Build 15 catapults, and even a thick wall will quickly turn to dust. So online players have to negotiate to play without catapults or simply disable them in the advanced settings. But the fact is, in real life, catapults did much less damage to stone walls. During a siege, a wall could be bombarded with stones for months with virtually no damage. I think a "Walls 10x Stronger" feature should be added. This would make the fortress much more effective against both stone bombardment and other siege weapons. At the same time, players wouldn't be forced to abandon the use of catapults, and sieges could become more sophisticated and varied. Request #3: Lord figures. It's somehow uncool that Richard the Lionheart and Duke de Puce look the same in the game, like a big guy with an axe. I'd finally like to see figures of our familiar characters on the battlefield. So, for the lord to look like the character he's associated with. That would be really cool. Request #4: Target Priority. I'd like to have more control over my troops. For example, I really miss changing the target priority for ranged units. For example, the enemy is rolling catapults toward my fortress, and I have ballistae on the walls that could attack these catapults. But instead, my ballistae fire at archers, and I have to select them and set targets manually. Or my crossbow unit is attacked by infantry and archers. The infantry poses a greater threat, but my warriors still fire at the enemy archers because they have target priority for ranged units. Overall, it would be great to have three buttons for ranged units: 1: Melee target priority. 2: Melee target priority. 3: Siege weapon priority. I think this feature could provide much more tactical freedom and change the outcome of many battles. Ultimately, it's as convenient as autotrading. Request #5: Autotrading presets. I use the same autotrading settings in almost every match. And each time, I have to adjust about 10 different items using these sliders. It would be great if I could save and load my autotrading settings in a couple of clicks. It's just so convenient. Request #6: Castle expansion. In the standard Stronghold DE, the castle doesn't have strict territorial boundaries. This means you can expand your fortress beyond its territory, as if starting from the already built walls and extending them. This is missing in Crusaders. I'd like to have a setting to switch between a limited construction zone and expanded construction, which can be continued at a large distance from the castle, extending the already built walls. I hope my point is clear. Request #7: Ships and bridges. I understand that this will most likely never be implemented in this wonderful game. Although who knows, maybe in a DLC. It would be really cool to be able to build ships, at least just to transport troops across seas and rivers. And also build bridges. As a single, unified building. Like a barbican. So that you could walk under it in one direction and over it in the other. This would diversify the possibilities for designing fortresses. Plus, we could consider the possibility of building bridges across rivers. And we could also add a natural bridge to the editor. Like a stone arch that you could walk over or under. An indestructible terrain element. Cool. Well, yeah. I don't know if the developers will read my suggestions or consider them suitable for the game. But if you're reading this, I want to say a huge thank you for the wonderful game you created and brought back to life for us. My suggestions aren't because I don't like anything. I love this game just the way it is. But maybe this experience can help us all make the game a little better. You're great, guys. Keep up the good work. Good luck to you.

23 years later and still there's "not enough wood m'lord". Jokes aside this remake is perfection. The game has been updated for modern systems, runs flawlessly too. I haven't got any issues even with the insane battles of extreme too. Runs like butter. That being said, love they included everything from Crusader and Crusader Extreme under one roof. They added on it too, by adding additional lords. The campaign is as addicting as it was when I first played it as a child. Currently I'm having the most fun with the trials as I love how they put you at a disadvantage which turns out to have long epic skirmishes (one of the trials took me almost 3 hours to complete and those 3 hours were constant back and forth with epic battles through the entire game - I love it). Haven't tried the timed trials yet as I don't like to be pushed by the clock - I prefer to develop for a while and have large battles in mid-late game. The skirmishes are amazing as well and the map roster is both challenging and fun. The addition of editor and day 1 workshop support just adds to it, as the community is already pushing out amazing maps making the replayability practically endless. The editor is well made and I'm having quite the bit of fun with it playing out any scenario that might come to mind. The addition of the new super large 800x800 maps is amazing too. They even topped it off with an ambitious roadmap with few DLCs coming in later throughout the year that would be adding new lords, maps, units and QoL improvements as well. Can't wait to see what else they are cooking up for us. In conclusion this remaster has been everything I wanted it to be and more. Well worth it full price as there's countless hours of content to go through and basically endless replayability. Wheter you're a newcommer or you were taking the holy land 23 years ago, I recommend this with both hands (and that's not just the nostalgia speaking). Easily 10/10 and big thanks to Firefly for breathing fresh air into this timeless classic.

Don't expect Age of Empires II level definitiveness here, it's an HD remaster. Still a solid one, can't complain As for the game itself, there is a good reason why they are publishing this for the fourth time and still get away with it - the original game was an absolute masterpiece far ahead of its time. An RTS with a production chain based economy where building layout actually matters, resources are stored in an actual stockpile, with castle siege warfare more advanced and fun than Total War's? I have yet to see another game like that decades after the Crusader release There is also a good reason why it has never reached the stars - all this good stuff is singleplayer only. Things were never properly balanced for multiplayer. They didn't even implement the community patch that made multiplayer somewhat playable But yeah, "Greetings, sire! The desert awaits you!" still hits, absolutely recommended

The original Stronghold Crusader wasn’t just a game to me, it was a part of my childhood. I still remember walking home from school every day as a child, and that walk always felt extra long—not because of the distance, but because I couldn’t wait to get home and play this game on my old computer. Those memories with castles, armies, and battles have lingered with me ever since. Now, I'm a middle-aged man with a full-time job, a family, and a child of my own. Gaming has become a luxury, as life is just too busy. I am so glad that they made this Definitive Edition—it is a time machine that brings me back to my childhood and allows me to be that worry-free child again. Even just for one or two hours, I'll be happy. There is lots of content in this remake, and I believe it’s worth the money. And unlike the previous remake, this time they finally added Skirmish mode and Co-op mode. They are game-changers for players like me who are no longer up for intense PvP games. I thank the Firefly Studios for making this re-make, and I hope both veterans and newcomers will enjoy it!
