I have been enjoying the game so far, in fact I love the game despite some short comings like performance issues, small bugs and other design choices that I dont like as much (Not being able to destroy empty buildings, what?), so much so I also got the supporter edition because the game is so much fun. But there is a pretty big bug in the game where you can't load saves because the game crashes during loading screen and the devs are just saying, we know, no eta to fix in a very difficult way to find. With 26 hours in, refund is no longer possible (not really wanted) and there is no clear communication from the devs on a fix or at least an estimation, I have to give a negative review to warn others to wait until this game is updated to consider buying it ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The devs stepped up and worked hard to fix this critical bug, in fact even reached out to some community members to test the fix in a private beta branch, and once things worked out they released the update fully fixing the crash on load issue for everyone :) So to be fair with the dev team, I'm updating my review to reflect this update and my endorsement of Survive The Fall

I'll give it a thumbs up just because it's not terrible, but it's not amazing either. It's mid, but still not worth the thumbs down. Game throws you into the wilderness explaining what to do, your base gets attack and when you return it's ruins, so you build it back up. You base is a separate location from the main game, you don't get to chose where it goes. Exploring the world is alright, doesn't look the best. Very dull looking and gloomy which makes it look depressing. It feels a little out dated too, graphically. You've got freedom in the outside, looting it okay. Use tools like pick axes, axes lock picks on certain containers. You can't just every tree down or mine every rock, just certain nodes, so you need to plan what to take with you each time. Combat is okay. You can places traps and stuff and use stealth, but even in the first area, some enemies are level 1 stealth so you can't kill them. I just go guns blazing. Easier. My main hate is the base area. After returning from an expedition. Your people are hungry, tired or contaminated. Which requires you do to timed actions. And while at your base you only have so much time to do it and then the day ends. You can choose to go out on an expedition again or stay in your base and manage your people. You don't physically control anyone here. You can set people to farm materials from your base, but the reward is little and with there only being so much time, it isn't worth it, but might as well just do it anyway. This game doesn't scratch the itch, the itch just keeps moving around. When I play it I'm kinda bored but then I just want to go out and get more stuff, but I hate returning to base.

A nice blend of arpg and survival/base building elements, with a surprising large amount of content to explore and unlock. On the bad side, it's not in a very polished state and my enjoyment has been heavily conditioned by the ugly visuals, the bugs (characters getting stuck on props/terrain, loss of resources when cancelling buildings, loot dropping under meshes and becoming inaccessible), the janky combat and base management, and the bad AI that's easy to cheese (picking them off and waiting for awareness reset, dying of lack of food/sleep without automatically interrupting tasks). I still recommend the game as the slow burn of the core loop (explore, gather, upgrade) is appealing to me, but also since its clearly a labor of love by a small indie team, and the mentioned issues can be addressed over time, just be sure to manage your expectations if you buy it at full price as it really needs some bug fixing and QOL updates.

So far, I'm recommending this game because it's $20 and I like small development teams who try ambitious goals. They did a lot right here. However, I will say this is one title I kind of wish was in Early Access. I feel like the bones of a truly great game are here.. but they stopped short. It's still good how it is, but if it had more time to cook I think it could be a $30-40 game instead of $20. Lets talk about it. I will be updating this review as I play more, but this is release day and I wanna give people some early game ideas of what to expect before they buy. The Pros -When I first saw this game and the precision shooting in real time, I thought it was a bad idea. When you're talking top down games in this style and precision shooting instead of directional shooting, it's usually a nightmare for controllers or Steam Deck players. It actually works well here and the shooting locks on if close to an enemy. I like it. Now there's some jank to it.. sometimes you won't shoot what you're locked on to or the lock will just move away from your target, but I take this as a plus because it's far better when you're actually using it than I expected from watching previews. -The base building mechanics here are good so far. I like a game that understands I need a reason to go out into the world. I also need a reason to want to build a base. This game hits both on the head and I applaud them for getting that. Even major companies like Bethesda have had issues recently with this fundamental thought process. -I like all the ideas in this game. Factions, companions, looting, real time combat, a stealth system.. I love the direction this is going. Now lets talk about the cons so far.. -Voice acting. Man, this game should have it. You want me to care about these characters, but the text is really taking me away from caring if they live or die. I can't feel the story at all through text. Especially with some of the lame writing. For instance, "Are they pushing up daisies?" "Huh?" "Are they dead?" Did the world end 5000 years ago? Everyone knows what the phrase means. Come on with this writing. -Music? This game needs it. You're walking around for hours and there really is no sounds but the same ominous track in the background and shooting every now and then. There's no talking so they should have livened it up with a radio or something. They really paid very little attention to audio at all in this game. -If you're gonna do mobile game style text and a graphic of the person speaking, even mobile games today change the art of the person to fit what they're saying. It helps A LITTLE in making the person feel more real. This game has none of that. Text and a static image. I need more. It's these reasons I wish this game was in Early Access. It feels like a game you can complete.. and we can call it finished, but it should have been so much more. It's not a bad game, but it could've been better.

Survive the Fall has a Mutant Year Zero vibe, with very similar exploring system and setting, but with real-time combat instead of the turn-based MYZ. However, it takes us to a next level with the base management. It's a very cool game.
