Let me start by saying that I am only on chapter 12. I usually wait until I'm finished with a game before I leave a review, but this game is truly a masterpiece. Its visuals are not the greatest, even considering that it is 5 years old, but they are still beautiful, from he envirenments, to all the difference Sects, this game is beautiful. And so is the music. I live the vibes and its very relaxing. Characters are all really good and have very different personalities. Their designs are also very well done. Combat is much simpler than similar titles I will say so that hinders the expierence a little bit, But overall I love this game and so far I am giving this one an 8/10, Strongly recommend . I am looking forward to finishing this and then I think I might try Xuan Yuan Sword 7.
The first Chinese RPG I've played and enjoyed immensely was Gujian 3. Since then I've been trying to find something to recreate that feeling of enjoyment and the various aspects that it came with. I had tried Sword and Fairy 6 before this and it was pretty bad, so I was quite pleased to see that Sword and Fairy 7 managed to capture me within just an hour of starting. It has been presented well, and localized relatively well, which made all the difference. 👍The story is quite strong, and dense at the same time. There are a lot of details and it does require paying attention. Doing so I was able to understand at a high level what was going on, though there were a lot of names and sects and realms and mythologies and deities and demons and wells and techniques and all sorts of object names being thrown about. But I enjoyed it, and persisting and paying attention was indeed rewarding in my opinion. I think if you're used to skipping dialog in other games, this just won't appeal to you. 👍There are 4 main characters , and most of them are quite likeable. I especially liked Sang Yo and Bai Moqing. Each of the characters felt like a good mix of vulnerable and strong, and at the same time came with a sufficient amount of complexity and their own motivations, backstories, growth, and way of seeing the world. 👎Unfortunately there is what I term a "Generic Wuxia Protagonist (GWP)" which is another way of saying a "Gary Stu", and overall I found Xiu Wu to be the least interesting of the group. But I think this particular kind of character really appeals to wuxia fans, oh well. There is a bit of romance with Xiu Wu and it's pretty obvious from the opening scene, although to be honest it felt forced and I think the story could have done without it. The relationship between Yo and Bai felt a lot more genuine, realistic, and affectionate without being contrived or eyerolling. 👍Overall though the combination of story and characters on their various quests was quite appealing to me. There's an aspect of caring about the whole - what effects will our actions have on the village, on others, on friends. There's taking care of people, there was even one quest in which someone had to go apologize to grandpa. They discuss things before taking action, and it takes into account everything that's happened so far. This isn't something I normally see in western RPGs, and so it was quite refreshing to go through. 👍The environments are gorgeous, even the supposedly dangerous ones. There's plenty of room to explore although the discoverables can be few and far between, and can lend a sense of emptiness to the zones. It's accompanied by an equally gorgeous soundtrack which I'm planning on playing on repeat for a good while longer. 👎I think others have pointed out the combat , which felt like the weakest point to me as well. Although you are taught combat moves and magic skills and dodging as well, they barely matter during fights as you alternate between zipping randomly all over the place, or being unable to finish combos before being knocked down and staying down for ages which I found frustrating. Even worse there's no 'feedback' when the characters are hit by enemies, so not infrequently I'd reach zero health and not realize how it happened. I really think the developers could have paid more attention to polishing the combat or just simplifying it. I'm glad that Sword and Fairy 6 didn't put me off and I gave 7 a chance, and I'll now look forward to future instalments, hopefully this series continues.
Really great hidden gem. Beautiful visuals and a work of art landscapes and backgrounds. It’s everything you would probably want out of a Wuxia game outside of replayability but will keep you going for hours. Maybe one you could play again in new game + after not playing the game for a while. The demo was great and this game went up immediately on my wishlist and I bought it shortly after. I really liked the gameplay and the RTX effects in the water reflections especially. It’s a very beautiful game to look at. The story line keeps you interested and the exploration and combat is really fun. Just word of caution that the DLC is nothing like this game and I would not recommend it as it’s quite long and boring. This game along with Xuan Yaun Sword VII highly recommended on sale. These games are quite different but both really good and I look forward to seeing what the future brings from Softstar. 8/10
Overall it's a nice game, I'm on my second playthrough right now. The world looks beautiful, the playable characters look beautiful, the outfits are very pretty, there's some customisation if you've played a bit and I adore the little spirits. The fights are a little sloppy at times, and there are some minor stutters here and there. The English translation is unfortunately not that great - I personally can make up for it understanding basic Chinese, but I'm aware many other can't. The story isn't unbelievably long or insanely exciting, I still had a lot of fun. I recommend buying it on sale if you're into somewhat ancient Chinese stylisation. Mind, this isn't historically accurate and a phantasy setting with magic, spirits and deities. I'll give this game a 7/10.
