A great cat-and-mouse horror game in the style of the backrooms. The whole production is very well packaged, with a VHS-coated lens and a deliberately documentary-style presentation. You don’t press "start game" from the menu; you "play tape". What follows is an interactive recounting of some poor soul lost in an impossible labyrinth of interconnected hallways, equal parts dread and disbelief. The fluorescent lights drone constantly in the background, even through total darkness, making the whole space feel mundane and impossible at the same time. The in-game map does a phenomenal job of selling the backrooms here: a sketched-out drawing with no updating markers or guides to tell you where you are or which direction you're going. It’s a terrifying place to be lost in, especially with a monster in tow that can hear every move you make -- even through the player’s own microphone. But, as with a lot of horror games, the seams eventually start to show. Once you've played for a while and figured out how to game your hideous stalker, you’re mostly left with the jump scares to raise your pulse. Meanwhile, the limited saving system helps maintain tension for a while, but ends up feeling more like a burden once the mystery unravels and you've more or less "got it". Still, it never really outstays its welcome and remains a fun and highly thematic foray into the backrooms. The presentation and atmosphere do a lot of heavy lifting, and for a while, being lost in those endless hallways is genuinely terrifying. Recommended.
This is a really good horror game, but this is not a good "Backrooms" game. I don't think the developers understood what made the Backrooms so good as a concept. I feel like this game could be its own thing, and do pretty well - but they just made the walls yellow and added buzzing lights, slapped a Backrooms sticker on it, all to market to the masses. This plays identical to their game Rotten Flesh, but, I honestly prefer Rotten Flesh over this one. Rotten Flesh doesn't need to fit any vibe or abide by any rules, but, making a Backrooms game is different. So, a very talented developer team are behind these games, and the mechanics are solid. Gameplay is solid. Jumpscares are a bit annoying, but sometimes pretty creative. I appreciate that there is an option to turn them off. The writing is absolutely horrible, however, the monster design is not bad at all, and 100% defeats the majority of crappy Backrooms entities people come up with. I have mixed feelings on the game overall. I recommend, for a traditional horror game experience. I do not recommend, for someone looking for a core Backrooms experience. Too much going on here.
