What a hidden gem, wow. The story is indeed not linear but holy heck, do you need to be spoon-fed everything?! Read a book! Enjoy the ambiguity and the abstract of this awesome story! Also, at a certain point in the game you get access to the Bestiary that gives you more context and more interesting things about the world of "There is No Light" which is just an extra plus for more immersion. I really liked the combat style, you end the game still learning it and having fun with it. The healing ability (plus the medkits) was strange at first but the challenge was really good and, in my opinion, faithful to the context of the story. The art is just top-tier - god-tier - and the maps are sensational, I visited multiple places multiple times because of how perfect they are. Enjoy exploring every nook and cranny, it's so worth it getting lost in this game! The OST is also so good, each map and each area has it's own music and you can clearly see that a lot of time and thought was given to each. I highly recommend this game for those who like RPG-Metroidvania games and that, of course, like good pixel art. This is definitely a game I will revisit in the future, this time in New Game +. If you can, support the small team Zelart by purchasing the Support DLC!

This game is insanely underrated! Reading the reviews after finishing the game i am baffled at all of the people talking about not knowing where to go or what the games story is about. It's almost like they didn't even bother doing any of the dialogue or reading the notes in the game. This game has AWESOME lore and is one of the best souls-likes i have played. Also one of the more difficult ones until you get the combat flow down. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

World building is great. A lot of questions are answered. Yet, so many remain after finishing the game. Atmosphere is also great. Combat is okay. My advise: Take the path first in the lower left of the station first, and stick to it to the end. After that choose one more, and stick it out as well. At the end of each path is a weapon for you to use. I was exploring around and bounced between paths, which had me left me with very little content to vary my gameplay with when I finally got the weapon. There are few maps included now. But you will often find yourself lost in the sprawling tunnels of the underground. And secrets are hidden everywhere.

I've been playing a lot of retro Soulslikes/Metroidvanias as of late. This game is one of the toughest I've played in a very long time. If you need a retro challenge, go for it. However, this game does punish a haphazard approach, even more than many games in these subgenres. First, the good: The setting is interesting enough that I think it would be a good campaign for a tabletop RPG. It's bleak and apocalyptic while still managing to surprise. Great world-building if you take the time to look at everything. The music is good, the visuals are excellent, the control is solid, and the boss fights are often interesting beyond button-mash and dodge. If you like 16-bit style art, this game is a visual treat. In short, There Is No Light does everything right on paper. However, there are some quibbles that keep this from being an all-time great: - This game is tough. Really tough. The simple combat mechanics work, but dodging is sometimes a tad floaty-feeling, which can make boss battles feel harder than they are. The silver lining is that when you get the hang of the combat system, you feel like you've earned it. Medkits are rare enough without spending karma (or abusing the no-karma-lost power), and near the end of the game you can't use them during a fight anyway. - It's old school from the standpoint of quests (careful not to skip dialogue too fast lest you miss something important) and maps (there are none). Find a guide if you don't want to miss anything. - The Traveler option makes the game less punishing, and as far as I can tell, it does not affect the ending. If this is the case, it should be made clear somewhere in-game. Most players are used to easier mode meaning not getting the real ending (or the full game or achievements). Also, allow us to turn off the "you can switch to Traveler Mode" message- it's unintentionally insulting when trying to figure out a tough boss XD. - Power ups and new weapons are a mixed bag. Some feel almost mandatory, while others are situational or barely useful. The additional weapons were mostly useless- the second weapon is great but it stops working way too fast (even when fully upgraded), and the third and fourth weapons I barely used at all- they did not feel very helpful. - Your patron, Samedi, is a dick. Unlike in some games like Death's Gambit, he's not an entertaining one, either- they missed the mark. I didn't care about him getting a beatdown; I just wanted him to go away. There are a few translation quirks, too: "Oh, The Great Hand/The Messiah, answer my prayers!" - Lastly- and this is a trend in video games that really needs to stop- if you have to explain how a mechanic works, especially one integral to the game, I should be able to pause, go to a menu option, and re-read it. Some of the basic mechanics are explained once, easily skipped on accident, and then there is no way to look them up again. I should not be required to go to an outside source to re-read about how the healing bar works. The lowdown: It's a well done game, but be prepared to fail a lot, even when compared to other Soulslikes.

I really want a sequel. Holy moly, just finished the game and enjoyed it a lot. The aestectics is PHENOMENAL . The setting, enemies, towns, bosses are gorgeous. The pixel art is truly well done. The bits of lore were fantastic. I went into this game with no expectations. I just wanted to play some story light game after Cyberpunk 2077 and this blew me away. Still has some plot holes (or open to interpretation / intentional ones, like Dark Souls) but I got hooked wih the mysteries of the world.
Are there angels on the surface?? Wax was modified angel's blood?? What exactly is the black Wax?? Why the fuck did the Hand needed babies?? Is all that red thing in New Dawn blood?? What is the Messiah, a fallen angel??
. Man, I want answers. The bad thing is that I wanted to unlock some of the weapons earlier. The game is repetitive until you unlock the weapons and omen variants. Those weapons had interesting upgrades, I just forgot to use most of them. Saw some reviews telling that the enemies are hard to read but all of them have telegraped moves that can be antecipated, some harder than others. Fuck that last boss Hand Overall, highly recommend if you like gorgeous pixel art and lore like Dark Souls.
