Enjoyable game have this on PS2 was fun picked it up some years back on Steam to replay it but never had the time to do so and now the upgraded version is out with Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered so I'll put my time into that one has achievements and a slight upgrade on the graphics.

Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness is one of the most ambitious and divisive chapters in Lara Croft’s long-running saga, developed by Core Design and published by Crystal Dynamics. Released in 2003, the game represents a conscious attempt to reinvent the Tomb Raider formula after years of incremental iteration, pushing the series toward a darker, more mature tone while layering in narrative complexity, stealth, and character-driven intrigue. Rather than another globe-trotting treasure hunt, this entry frames Lara as a fugitive entangled in a web of murder, occult conspiracies, and moral ambiguity, signaling a clear departure from the pulpy adventure roots that had defined the franchise. The story opens with Lara accused of killing her former mentor, Werner Von Croy, immediately casting her in a vulnerable and uncharacteristically hunted role. As she navigates the shadowy streets of Paris and descends into ancient catacombs and forgotten sanctuaries, the narrative gradually unfolds into a tale involving secret societies, forbidden art, and a looming supernatural threat tied to an organization known as the Cabal. This noir-inflected mystery places far greater emphasis on dialogue, investigation, and atmosphere than previous games, presenting Lara not just as an action heroine but as a conflicted figure driven by guilt, determination, and the need for redemption. The introduction of Kurtis Trent as a secondary playable character further expands the scope, offering a parallel perspective and reinforcing the game’s interest in layered storytelling. From a gameplay standpoint, The Angel of Darkness sought to modernize Tomb Raider by introducing systems that went beyond platforming and puzzle-solving. Stealth mechanics allowed Lara to move quietly, overpower enemies from behind, and navigate certain areas without direct confrontation. Dialogue choices with non-player characters hinted at branching narrative possibilities, while a strength and stamina system influenced traversal, requiring Lara to gradually build her abilities through repeated actions. Hand-to-hand combat was expanded, firearms were integrated into more urban scenarios, and the overall structure leaned toward a hybrid of action-adventure, stealth, and light RPG elements. On paper, these ideas suggested a bold evolution for the series. In practice, however, execution proved to be the game’s greatest weakness. Controls are frequently cited as clumsy and unresponsive, making precise movement—long a cornerstone of Tomb Raider—feel unreliable. Camera behavior often struggles in confined spaces, undermining platforming sequences and combat encounters alike. Many mechanics introduced with ambition lack refinement, with the strength system in particular feeling underexplained and inconsistent in its feedback. Bugs, uneven collision detection, and awkward animations further erode confidence in the core experience, turning moments of tension into frustration and interrupting the game’s narrative momentum. Visually and tonally, The Angel of Darkness embraces a grimmer aesthetic than earlier entries. Urban environments replace exotic tombs for much of the runtime, bathing the game in muted colors, harsh lighting, and an oppressive atmosphere that complements its story of conspiracy and decay. When the game leans into its occult themes—through ancient ruins, cryptic symbolism, and unsettling lore—it hints at the compelling experience it could have been. The soundtrack and ambient sound design reinforce this mood, often prioritizing unease and mystery over heroic bombast. Despite its flaws, the game’s ambition has earned it a curious legacy. At release, mixed to negative reception overshadowed its narrative goals and contributed directly to Core Design losing control of the franchise, paving the way for Crystal Dynamics to reboot Tomb Raider with a more polished and accessible approach. Yet over time, The Angel of Darkness has gained a cult following among fans who appreciate its willingness to take risks, explore darker themes, and humanize Lara Croft in ways the series had not previously attempted. Retrospective discussions often focus less on whether the game succeeded and more on how close it came to redefining the franchise. Today, The Angel of Darkness stands as both a cautionary tale and a fascinating experiment. It is a game defined by contrast: bold ideas undermined by technical shortcomings, a compelling story constrained by awkward mechanics, and a vision that arrived before the tools and production realities could fully support it. For players interested in the history of Tomb Raider or in ambitious action-adventure games that dared to challenge their own identity, it remains a memorable, if often frustrating, experience—one that captures a pivotal moment when Lara Croft’s future hung in the balance between reinvention and collapse. Brings up childhood memories, the first Tomb Raider that I played. Yes, controls can be a little bad, but there is that atmosphere what you don't always feel. I had to save game often, because of controls. Story is great and Lara rocks.

I do not know what all the fuss is about. Tomb Raider TAOD is a lovely game to play! The controls are far easier than 1 2 and 3 (IMO) and though they have presented me with problems, they have been far fewer than playing TR 1 2 or 3. Graphics are excellent for age, sound is awesome, storyline is good - the character interaction is very dated and unecessary, but who cares about that? The game is excellent - don't use a mouse and you'll be fine!

Tomb Raider AoD is definitely my favorite game in the series! I played it countless times as a child, and even now, I still regularly play it. While the game does have some technical issues, the dark atmosphere and captivating story make up for it. It's the perfect blend of adventure and excitement, which is why it remains one of my all-time favorites!
