Very good and creepy. Not every horror game can give me those "oh sheet..." feelings, and this one had done a great job of it! Also, if you aren't good at H.O. scenes or are too lazy, they have "Adventure" mode. Which is a simpler version of it and less items to work with in the first place. Now onto the Second of the Trilogy. Heh.......... Heh............
I've been playing hidden object games pretty much my entire life. I have core memories of sneaking on to my dad computer and getting horrified and amazed by them. Today I know that not all of these games are made equal. There's a lot of trash in this genre that I love and cherish. With this being said, I was very skeptical coming into this one. This is one of the few hidden object games that gets recommended by other. Usally people just talk about the genre itself instead of any specific games. I'm happy to say that I now see why this one stands out for so many. It manages to feel way for polished and well made while also sticking to the things that makes this genre so addictive for me. Like a very polished version of what I used to play on my dads computer. Plus the horror weirdly enough really works for me. I found myself acutally dreading going into certain rooms hahaha. It's been a long while since one of these games have made me feel that way.
Even having to play through this more than once for my completionist lifestyle, I absolutely love the game series and even though the first one has the basic 'hidden object' vibe... the story is what sucked me into loving the game. I have to play the other two games in the series yet, but I have no doubt I'll love them too. I'm not someone who usually likes simple hidden object games, so for anyone like me.. give this a shot because there's just something different here.
It's not a particularly great HOG, but not a terrible one either. It does give me things to think about, though. Sometimes my inner European grandmother rises to the surface and I . . . must . . . HOG ! I think the genre is one with a lot of flexibility, a lot of potential , despite some of the inherent goofiness of it. I was REALLY interested in this one because I thought it was a Green Moon event: a genuine melding of bloody grindhouse horror and autistically satisfying junk-huntin' (looking at the trailer NOW , it seems kind of funny that I ever thought that). Horror & HOG should go together quite naturally, shouldn't they? The decayed ! The forsaken ! What secrets lie buried under hills and heaps of dusty, rusty kipple? Though there certainly are dried blood patches and a Sadako-style background creeper in this one, none of the horror is really so direct as I'd convinced myself. I partly blame the store page, for the over-strong horror vibes it projects . . . and I also blame the elaborate emblem locks the entire genre is filled with, for constantly putting me in the mind of Resident Evil ! I'm always waiting for that extra nudge into horror territory when playing these, expecting a transition to zombie-blasting survival action any second (the protag in this one even gets her hands on a shotgun!) . . . I really do have to wonder, though, if the survival horror genre had some impact on the humble HOG -- look at how many weird, convoluted mechanisms they all have that would be right at home in RE's Spencer Mansion! Whatever the tone, I do enjoying playing HOGs for their meditative vibes, particularly early in the morning or immediately after work for a few minutes. And I do believe everything, even a HOG, is better with a little story. The narrative of this one's not awful . . . though I don't know if I'll immediately jump into the sequel. It's unfortunate that the game is simply too schizophrenic to carry the atmosphere the store page likes to project. Our Holly -- old "Xanax Eyes" I like to call her -- has to throw away every useful tool she picks up after a single use , then she has to go find another screwdriver or whatever to do a similar job not long after! It's also a little growl-worthy how the little figurines of characters you pick up totally spoil story elements for you way before you get to the proper reveals. Yes, it's scatterbrained in some wrong ways, but I enjoyed it all the same! You want a HOG? Beyond dispute, this is . . . a HOG . And now this is not a criticism of anything (just an aside), but it's very odd how a simple HOG like this doubles or triples in length if you turn the adventure sparkles off for extra challenge. It can get almost too long , actually, because though they're generally easy . . . there's always some little bit that you just won't find for a long time. Then there's another! I would have looked forever for the extra railroad piece if I hadn't relented and turned my guiding coruscations back on. (Have you ever watched a Lucio Fulci horror film? They tend to have this quality: they're often a little junky and nonsensical, while at the same time possessing fantastic camerawork and atmosphere as thick as chilled Nutella (also Italian!). That's why they're so much better on rewatching, when you know what you're getting into and can appreciate them without expecting too much of them. What I'm leading into is that I believe HOGs (at least the spooky ones) should lean into their strengths and go for the Lucio Fulci nightmare jumble -- full-on, with possessed, blood-weeping girls puking endless streams of guts, bizarro Conquistador zombies, taxidermied Birds of Darkness, and infinite hellscapes of mist and mud (and winos). True Fear I is tantalizingly close to Fulci Land, as it already has a gothic cemetery under a mansion . . . but no banana! I fear the guys who makes these will never make the leap -- probably because their European pensioner demographic wouldn't like it.)
