Get on sale. For the price of a movie ticket it's kind of worth it. Sadly, there is not allot of meat on these bones. The upgrades feel meaningless and the maps are pretty much all the same. I got about 2,5 hours of enjoyment out of it in total. It's still only in early access so maybe they'll improve it.
I could poetically pontificate about this game, but I don't need to. Watch the trailer - that's the game. It's one of the most honest trailers out there - no flashy cutscenes, no big swings, nothing that says anything but what this game is. It's "Mortal Engines - the game" when it doesn't take itself seriously. You know that by the trailer. Does it get repetitive? Yeah. Does it throw some neat mechanics? Yeah. Does the difficulty curve sometimes just get unfair? Yeah. Does it offer enough variability and neat ideas that its fun for 10-20 hours till you get your fill, uninstall, and then come back after early access to see if they made enough to get you to reinstall it? Yeah. There ya go. But you knew all that if you watched the trailer!
What is it? Wanderburg is a medieval roguelike that has you drive around in a castle on wheels (or legs) and solve most problems by eating them. Sheep, villages, other castles, no matter, you're not a picky eater. As you consume everything smaller than yourself, your fortress grows bigger through upgrades and modules you add to it, letting you bolt on cannons, magic, armies of minions and other increasingly irresponsible weaponry. The Good The Gameplay – The general gameplay feels great. You drive around in minimalistic but very cute environments, kill stuff, collect gold & silver and pick upgrades. After each run you can spend silver to unlock different captains (castle drivers, basically), upgrades and modules you can tack onto your castle. The early progression of unlocking the modules and trying out different builds feels super satisfying. The Bad (Lack of) Meta Progression – As of now you can unlock a certain amount of castle modules but there is no progression outside of runs that actually makes them stronger. So your damage ceiling for a module in your first run is basically the same as it is in your 100th run. This means you'll likely find your favourite build pretty quickly and then end up playing it over and over while always picking very similar upgrades for the modules during runs. Conclusion The bread and butter of the game work beautifully and make for a very addictive gameplay loop. All we need now is much more meta progression between runs so they don't become repetitive. The devs already acknowledged the feedback they got about this (and hey, this is what early access is for) and if they act on it, this game has a ton of potential. Even as of now you probably still easily get 10 hours out of it which is fair for the price, if they keep adding more stuff, I could definitely see myself playing it for much longer than that.
