Dec. 2025
After playing this game for quite hours at this point, I wanted to update my review. Overall this game is pretty fantastic. I will say right off the bat that you will need to be able to tolerate a bit of jankness. I have a pretty high tolerance to look past some clunkiness if the underlying gameplay is good. I have found some pretty terrific RPG's this way, and Age of Reforging definitely falls into this category. That being said, I really have not ran into anything game breaking. The largest issue I had was not progressing the main story quest correctly by talking to the refugee leader about the coin before progressing the story. I'm one of those people that will make multiple saves, so I just had to load a previous save and lost about 30 minutes of progress. I actually don't know if this would have broken the story quest, but I didn't want to risk it. The English translation for the game is also very rough. Some sentences literally don't make sense at all, and others you can sort of make out what they were attempting to say. Most of the dialogue is passable, you will just notice the bad translation very often. There is a tremendous amount to do in this game. There are many different hidden skills and classes available to the player. For instance... I have found ways to unlock magic for non magic based characters, I have found several unique spell tomes for new magic types (Darkness and Spirit magic), I found a Bard college where you can learn to become a bard, and much more. All of these quest lines are fairly surface level and probably take only an hour or two to complete, but there are dozens of secrets like this spread throughout the game. There are multiple faction quest lines separate from the main story (Arena, Merc, Knight, Wild Mage, etc). These pretty much all involve taking generic quests to progress your rank, and then doing a unique progression quest to unlock the next rank of the faction. Each faction has a vendor with different tiers that ties to your rank. There is also a pretty awesome Caravan system. The Caravan system reminds me a lot of Stoneshard where you can invest in your caravan to add additional modules that will help you as you travel throughout the map. This includes a healing tent, a blacksmith, and alchemy station, a training station, and even a prison to transport your prisoners. Similar to Stoneshard, you can receive injuries that will need to be cured by a doctor, or at your caravan camp if you have the appropriate skill set and resources. What's unique to Age of Reforging is that, in addition to your standard 4 party members, you can also use an additional 4 Caravan party members while traversing the map. A significant portion of this game revolves around encounters that occur as you traverse the map. Building out your caravan and having additional caravan members travel with you is a significant advantage. They will also gain combat experience through these encounters incase you want to swap your standard 4 party members out at some point. These caravan members will only be used for map encounters, and not in dungeons or points of interest, but I still thought this was a very cool mechanic. One issue I have with the game is how quickly levels occur, and the general process of finding new unique characters. The unique characters that I have found all seem to start around level 6-8, and this was significantly lower than the content that you need to complete in order to unlock them. This often means I was something like 15-20 levels higher when unlocking a new character. Now the characters do seem to catch up to some extent, but its still a bit of a wonky system. I would love to see this game progress much slower in general, but a lot of the early content would need to be rebalanced in order to make this happen. Environments can be pretty generic, especially the map encounters. I don't like how enemies on the map encounters just rush the player. The game actually has a pretty good single pull system that works well in POI's. The biggest suggestion I would make to the developer is to try and make the map encounters more interesting and diverse. I wouldn't have the mobs rush the player, I would have them be generic environments like a couple of buildings, or a grove of trees, etc. Overall is this a pretty solid CRPG with some interesting ideas.

Age of Reforging is a game that is a little bit complicated to recommend. To start with what I consider to be the major downsides: the English translation is pretty bad, and contains a lot of typos and moments of awkward phrasing. It has never gotten to the point where I didn't understand what characters were saying, but it is noticeable. Also, the game does have a number of bugs that are still being worked on at the time of this writing. I haven't encountered anything that truly broke the game for me, but it can be immersion-breaking. So why do I still recommend this game? Because as an open-world CRPG, very few games scratch the itch that this game does. The character building in this game is fantastic, and party building is excellent between the game's pre-set companions and the ability to hire almost any generic NPC through the game's captive and favor systems. You can make a necromancer, a druid, a samurai, a monk, a bard, a shapeshifter...a wide variety of fantasy class fantasies are possible to make here. This is then combined with the sheer number of things you can do to keep yourself busy, between doing quests, hunting bounties, winning arena matches...there's just a lot here. If you're someone like me, who enjoys character/party building with a lot of things to do, this game has that. In short, if you can get past the weak translation and the buggy jank, there's a diamond in the rough here. Despite its flaws, Age of Reforging has quickly become one of my favorite games this year.

This is my second strange game discovery this year. The game is clearly rough around the edges, but it's an unusual and intriguing mix of story-driven CRPG and sandbox gameplay. You get large open-area maps with both main and side quests, often with choices and consequences, but you can also freely roam the world, take on random quests from towns, fight monsters, and clear dungeons. You can build reputation with factions, cities, or even individual NPCs — and that's great. The concept is fantastic, even if there's still a lot of work to be done. The combat system and character progression are surprisingly deep and well thought out — I love it. It’s a mix of spending experience points to unlock skills and stats, while also improving weapon proficiencies and attributes through use. Combat and character attacks rely on physical hitboxes, a bit like Kenshi. It's not perfect, but the underlying design is impressive. You can customize tactics for each character — choosing fighting styles (like aggressive or defensive), setting up automatic skill usage, controlling attack direction, and adjusting how close or far they stay from enemies in combat. There's so much depth here. The variety of monsters is also amazing. Of course, the game looks and runs pretty clunky. A lot of the assets seem to come from the Unity Asset Store, and there are plenty of bugs — but the developers are actively working on fixes. I was 100% hooked — I played for 74 hours in the first week alone. So if you enjoy sandbox RPGs and CRPG-style systems, give it a try. Maybe wait for a few more updates, but this game is a hidden gem — not for its visuals or performance, but for the brilliant ideas at its core.

If you enjoy Pathfinder/Baldur's Gate/Pillars of Eternity, you'll enjoy this. It's a bit rough around the edges, but what it is, is trying to take the best out of a bunch of CRPGs and put together. Just don't expect Baldur's Gate 3 levels of quality. Think baldur's gate 2 instead...
