This game was kind of my companion during serious depression when I was a teen. Put close to 1k hours in it back when it came out on the Xbox. Every couple years or so, I'd replay it for nostalgia reasons. I bought this Steam version way back in 2018, I believe. I recently started playing it again, but never bothered to post a review before, so here are my thoughts: It's quite broken, like, literally. So many annoying bugs that were never fixed, though some can be bypassed with community patches and mods. Story is good, gameplay is mid and very repetitive but still enjoyable, balancing is pretty wack, dialog is mostly excellent, a lot of quests in need of serious rework, performance is absolutely terrible. I play in 3840x2160 with the HD Remaster mod, and obviously maxed settings. I have a PC with an i7-13700K, RTX 4080, 32GB DDR5 RAM and a 7000 MB/s SSD. And it can't hold a stable framerate, lol. I even got dips to like 35 FPS or lower in some scenarios, in particular with auras. Loading times are surprisingly (and annoyingly) long still. Yeah... game performance is inexcusably bad. I still recommend it - despite all the heachaches it may give you from time to time - because it's a game that you just have to have experienced at least once. The characters and the world building are wonderful, despite some shortcomings. Here's a couple things you want to keep in mind before you start playing this on modern PCs: - Google "Dragon Age Origins 4GB Patch" and install that right away - The game may still crash when loading certain saves or during certain fights, i.e. Denerim - Go to Nexusmods and download these mods - Either download Process Lasso or find a way to restrict the CPU resources - When you are transitioning areas, re-cast all buffs and auras - Save and reload often, and make sure to always have a more recent save available - Do this if you are missing the DLC stuff - Saves are stored locally, just FYI. Steam Cloud does not automatically store your character saves To fix the Denerim crashing problem, turn down all the graphics settings to LOW before you load your Denerim save. This has worked for me. The 4GB patch doesn't prevent crashing. Some fights, won't spoil which, have so many effects going on that the game apparently can't handle. If you still crash after turning graphics to low, also disable Frame Buffer Effects and turn on V-Sync. This got me through a certain fight where it would always crash when the boss would transition into phase 2. - Download the "Dragon Age Origins Unofficial Remaster" mod - Download the "More Hairstyles" mod - Download the "Character Respecialization" mod (*) - Download the "Expanded Inventory" mod - Download the "Faster Movement in AND out of Combat" mod - Download the "Qwinn's Ultimate DAO Fixpack v3.52" mod - Download the "Dain's Fixes" mod (**) - Download the "FtG UI Mod - More Readable Fonts and UI" mod - Download the "CharGenMorph Compiler" mod - Download the "Awakening Silverite Mines Bugfix" mod - Download the "Lock Bash" mod Trust me on this. It will play much better with these mods. (*) Careful with this one. If you respec a character that has a specialization, you can't spec into it again until you unlocked it. (**) Use CORE + TWEAKS + BUG FIXES files. Rest is up to you. I.e. Task Manager -> Eco Mode. Kinda funny how this 2009 game can make my CPU pull ~170W if I don't do this, lol. I should mention that I have my FPS globally capped to 117 and I'm using NVCP V-Sync with FreeSync to avoid tearing on my 4k120Hz OLED TV. That CPU power draw stems from the game somehow using all of my cores, not from crazy high FPS. This only applies when you get the Party Select screen. If you switch out companions, your buffs will not apply even if already enabled. You have to re-cast them all. This also applies to you, so turn them off and on again. Best to check your character screen (C) every now and then to make sure. Download the "Spell Miasma Sustained" mod if you want to use that particular aura. This is because it can happen to soft-lock yourself with a corrupted save. The game also has some weird bugs where performance may degrade over time, so simply reload your last save and it should work fine again for a while. Go to your Steam folder at: steam/steamapps/common/dragon age ultimate edition/redist and run the following .EXEs: - DAOUserviceSetup_Steam.exe - DAOU_UpdateAddinsXML_Steam.exe This will add all the DLCs from this edition.

One of those games where you travel to camp and just sit there, listening to the ambient music. And while your companions visually stand there, their dialogue and stories while you talk to them at camp sell the game itself. Leliana's adventures as a bard. Morrigan's tales of the wild lands, her mother and her philosophies on mages. Alistair's time at the Chantry, and the secrets of his family. Sten's customs and stone-like demeanour as he struggles to explain his unique and almost unknown culture. Zevran's free spirit cultivated in Antiva. Wynne's wisdom and morality - almost a total opposite to Morrigan in philosophy. Shale's unique position as a golem with no memory of who she was. Unearthing her history and origins as you converse and travel with her more and more. Oghren, the drunk. The comic relief. The warrior at heart. All of this, while that music hums like a lullaby. Music that fills you with sadness. Hope? Questioning whether or not the quest you set out on can even be done. And that is what I think is missing from most of the recent releases into the Dragon Age franchise. That dark, gritty, bleak tone that is tempered by moments of comedy and even joy. This game was peak BioWare. And one of the best gaming RPG's to date.

Dragon Age Origins is a good, albeit very flawed game. The FIRST thing you should know is how to run this game on modern hardware, since it likes to crash all the time. This is because the game's launcher can't use more than 2GB of RAM. However, the fix is INCREDIBLY simple. All you need to do is follow [url=https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=233222451] this guide and replace the default EXE with one that can utilize 4GB of RAM. It takes like 5 seconds to do and that'll fix the problem. As for the game itself, let's start with the good. The writing is fantastic, as one would expect of 2000s Bioware. They really didn't pull any punches and things can get pretty dark (not in the tryhard edgy way). The companions are great, and hearing the banter between them is hilarious. I never get tired of listening to Alistair and Morrigan bully each other. The most unique thing about this game though is how it handles the different races. You only have three to choose from: human, elf and dwarf. If this were any other fantasy game, the only difference between the races would be stat differences. But in Origins, you actually get six different opening chapters depending on what you pick. A dwarf noble is going to have a completely different experience than a city elf. It doesn't make a HUGE difference on the broader story, but it helps flesh out the world and encourages multiple playthroughs. Now onto the not so good...which is most of the gameplay. This game looks like a third person action RPG, but it plays like a traditional real-time-with-pause CRPG. In an attempt to alleviate the constant need to pause and micromanage, Origins implemented a system called Combat Tactics. These are essentially scripts that let you dictate your party members' AI. If your party member is below 50% health, make them use a health potion on themselves. If an enemy has strong armor, make them use an ability that breaks through that armor. This sounds great on paper, but there are two problems. Characters only have a limited amount of tactics slots (I think 10 is the max), so between consumable items and abilities you don't have much to work with. The other problem is that you actually need to spend skills to increase the amount of slots, which can take away from other things you want to level up and slow down your progress. Mages don't really benefit from the Cunning stat, but you'll still need to invest 16 points into Cunning if you want them to get all the slots. It feels like they saw Final Fantasy XII's Gambit system, and then decided to limit it for no reason. The other problem with the gameplay is just good ol' fashioned jank. If you're walking up stairs, you WILL get stuck on the stair at the very top. This happens almost every single time. The AI, both friend and foe, can have real bad pathfinding. In fights where groups get clustered together, it's common to see an enemy jiggling in place as it tries to run past other enemies to get to you. This also happens to your allies, where they'll get stuck on someone and can't execute their attack. The absolute WORST instance of this was a "boss fight" down in an abandoned dwarven city. You're forced to fight in a small arena, and there's this giant statue thing in the middle of it. Your companions will target enemies, and then run face first into the statue and wiggle in place. Throughout the entire fight I was constantly having to switch to different party members and MANUALLY MOVE THEM around the statue, otherwise they'd be stuck in place and die. But even without those issues, the friendly AI isn't very smart. Your allies will have a lot more abilities than there are tactics slots, and the abilities that aren't assigned will go unused. They simply default to regular attacks. So you're going to be doing a lot of micromanaging whether you like it or not. I really like this game...but to be perfectly honest, it hasn't aged very well. It's frustrating, clunky and janky. The writing is really the only thing that saves this game and makes it worth playing.

This is one of the few games that I've owned across multiple platforms. It's also one of the few disc games that I managed to keep a hold of when I was homeless and moved across the US several years ago. That disc has very high sentimental value. TLDR: Yes.
