TLDR - If the idea of Murim + Rimworld sounds appealing to you, you'll enjoy this - sometimes. Eastern Era benefits from having a monopoly on the genre. There are a lot of three kingdom games, monkey king games, and RPGS. But very few sandbox Murim games. Having said that, there are some critical points that as a Rimworld clone it fails to hit. And I will be referencing Rimworld, hopefully fairly. Over time, I'll try to periodically update this review as the devs fix one thing or another. Let's start with the good - Pros - Developer attention, these folks are on top of it. They push out bug fixes and content every week. And it hasn't really slowed with the exception of them crunching down on their 1.1 release. They certainly deserve praise for this, very pearl-abyss esq on top of things. - High graphical fidelity for a rimworld clone. When a city/sect comes together it looks absolutely stunning. (see my community artwork for reference) - Combat feels like they dropped in a cultivation sim into the rimworld genre, flashy and fun. Cons - Pawn / Character variety . As of the time of writing this review, there are no unique models. This worked in rimworld because you couldn't see any detail. But here you can, it's grating looking at a beautifully drawn or rendered character page just to look at the exact same character model across all of the disciples. This severely hurts replay ability. As you don't get attached to a new set of unique disciples. Edit* Since the 1.1 update they have made strides towards making unique disciple appearances. However it's not quite there yet. The reason I think this is so important for this game is there are no unique maps. This general format leans into either replay-ability through unique sand box experiences or challenges. There are no unique maps and even on the hardest difficulties there is nothing that will threaten your sect/base. Which means I believe the only option they have within the current framework to give some sense of interest beyond a singular playthrough is diversity through characters. - Storage priority doesn't always work, This is something that worked in the first version of Rimworld. And you felt it, organizing felt good when things went where they are supposed to go. There is a priority system in Eastern Era, but it doesn't work consistently. Needs to be improved. - Work assignments and Hauling - Grouping these since even though the angry steam reviewer has the memory of a goldfish - these didn't work consistently in the original Rimworld as well. Hopefully the developers iron this out over time, allowing pawns/heros to pick up multiple items when hauling and work assignments working as intended more consistently. The work assignments do however function 90% of the time, which is good enough. - Lack of finer needs control - again, in comparison to rimworld. While you can designate the broad categories for foods/needs consumption for pawns/heros in this game, you cannot individually select for instance specific meals / foods. This can lead to some frustration when crafting as your disciples will eat whatever the heck they want - interfering with a recipe or quest as it goes - Lack of QOL Disciple/Pawn options. Equipping your sect is a nightmare, items decay but there's no automatic/standard equip features. Meaning you have to tab over each of your up to 40 disciples individually to set their items. To reiterate, there's a lot to see here. And hopefully the developers continue to pour their blood sweet and tears into the game. It will suffer forever from a horrendous launch, but games have come back from worse. With a little more polish on some core gameplay functionality - particularly the pawn variety. It will be a fantastic game. My hours are a bit inflated since I often leave my PC on while I'm out and about. But I've got at least 100 honest hours out of this! Worth every penny considering the gameplay I got out of it.
So right off the bat, there are a few people comparing it to Stranded: Alien Dawn (Which you should go play if you want a fun 3d rimworld-like), and they aren't just talking ♥♥♥♥ because it's 3d. The UI will look intensely familiar if you've played Stranded, as well as the menuing, the build menu, the seasons and everything else. I'm only about 3 hours in and I'm having fun with it, it scratches the cultivation itch. The Engrish is a given, unfortunately. The dev's previous games got quite a long dev cycle, so im eager to see what they do with it.
TLDR: If you like Stranded Alien Dawn (which was inspired by Rimworld) then you will like this game.... eventually. I'm recommending the game to support the devs because I can see a good game here but it's very buggy on release. The Good - Sect leader character customisation is a fun idea - You get points to spend on starting items for each playthrough - The game plays like stranded, you have x characters who need to build a settlement and defend it against raids while unlocking tech to get better - Loads more cosmetic options for your settlement compared to Stranded - NPC quests, sparring, trade, character martial arts growth/skills and a sect ranking system that lets you assign your characters roles and hierarchy gives more starting content over Stranded and gives the game it's flavour The Bad - Very buggy. They fixed the sound issue within hours of release. However, i've had characters getting stuck a lot (there is a button to move them so devs obviously know its an issue) but also the work assignments get bugged to where nothing works. - Mouse wheel zoom and map navigation doesn't feel fluid - Character customisation, while a good idea, needs a lot of improvement especially on face sculpting - Starting character roster needs expanding (I expect more from games in this area... it can't take long to get a portrait and and a bio and stick on some skills) - I can't seem to find a way to force someone to go fetch specific items, I have to prioritise delivery and hope they get to it eventually Still, I feel like this early on there is a lot of potential here so I hope the devs get the support to fix the bugs and flesh out the solid base.
Edit. Sound patched!! No sounds at launch, dev's responded immediately and have promised a hotfix within an hour and something about a player compensation plan (idk what that is but cool). I usually don't play with sound on anyways. Yes the game could have used a week or two more in the oven but damn I'm tired of waiting for release TBH. I don't care if they fix nothing, I'ma be busy wangdering and beat this game. Do you like Rimworld type games? Like Amazing Cultivation Simulator? Like Wuxia? Buy this. Hunting animals? They kungfu that ♥♥♥♥ and it's awesome. That rabbit tasted my spear like a champion after insulting the Young Master. He courted death and became dinner. I'll admit this hit my two favorite genres perfectly so I'm going to diehard fan this game. I'm an hour into it and no bugs whatsoever other than a few typos. This is 1000x better than garbage machine translated games any day of the week. There are a few lines so far that were not translated but nothing I couldn't ease past quickly (just build your own house in the tutorial don't use the premade yet).
About the no music/no sound - the devs have already explained that and mentioned it will be patched in an hour and they'll make it up to the players. Anyone who complains about that hasn't paid any attention to any of the responses from the devs. Some of the criticism is deserved though. The game is laggy, some of the English isn't there or is awkward and it could be improved. The game itself is fun if you enjoy these types of games! I do recommend watching streams about the game if you aren't too sure if it's for you because it is not a Western game, it's not a Western game, its' not a Western game (important things need to be repeated three times!). Keep this in mind, relax, and have fun.
