I can definitely see where this would get mixed reviews. It's great when it's all shiny and new, but when you get into the thick of it, the whole process gets TEDIOUS! Let me try and get a little more detailed on why that is. The most fun I had with the game was when designing a STUPIDLY LONG CORRIDOR of nothing but shark traps, but you don't get sharks until over 20 hours into your "Glorious Campaign". And somewhere 15 or more hours in, I figured out...you don't actually NEED the casino. No casino, no tourists, no problem, but that same casino door is still one of the entry points for invading investigators, so by forcing that into a funnel with a dozen traps, it can kill just about anybody. (Though that's the problem, when the story SPECIFICALLY needs you to CAPTURE those same agents, the hallway is TOO GOOD at killing them. But it did make the real life me laugh like an evil mastermind when watching disposable foes being forced into shark tank after shark tank, and eventually just plop and magically turn into body bags.) (Makes me like "This is so stupid, I love it" having that forced path of those walls directing them through all the shark tanks, since they can't break through walls. It's a case of "If it's stupid but it works, then it's not stupid.") So the sandbox element of designing stupidly awesome mechanisms is absolutely a positive, so then what's that negative for the "mixed" result? Tedium. I hope you like clicking, clicking, and more clicking. Click on research buttons, click on world map, click on where to build your traps and science tools, click on building beds and eating countertops, and it's just that over and over AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN for 30 or more hours! It gets dizzying. All the writing boils down to "I want this loot, but these pesky fools are in the way," and various synonyms for that. Aside for some smack-talk or maybe one or two tiny specks of wisdom, it gets super one-note, but that's fair since we're playing as the Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain. (And with that in mind, it nails the aesthetic 10/10 especially that 1950s 1960s Cold War vibe.) It just gives us a bit of "why" and nothing more, so if you're looking for a deep story, this ain't it. To put that tedium into raw numbers, as of this writing Steam's achievements tell me LESS THAN 10% even got to the point of getting H.A.V.O.C. to fire AT ALL! And combine that with all the loot items still with question marks in the "Rogue's Gallery" collection screen, even that milestone feels more like "The End of the Beginning", so I'm thinking, "HO BOY."
this is roughly the same game as the first one but this one is done a lot better imo. its a whole lot less glitchy and they fixed the issue of minions not training and replenishing your ranks. right now i am on medium difficulty and i am actually looking forward to replaying it on hard with a different evil genius (hopefully they have a different voice actor doing the other choices) i only have one real complaint is that though they fixed a lot of issues and made the graphics better they didn't really add anything to the whole genere of dungeon building. so rebellion if your reading this please do a evil genius 3.
