The best way I can describe this game: it feels like 8 friends, sat down together, struggling to answer the age old question, "What game can we play that we will all enjoy?". So they decided to start discussing what their favourite games are. One said Helldivers One said Borderlands One said Balatro One said PayDay One said Warframe One said Red Dead Redemption One said Deep Rock Galactic One said Vermintide ...they then proceeded to take their favourite little bits of each of those games and combined them into this masterpiece.

this game has the groundwork to be, in my honest opinion, the next Big Thing™ in the PvE co-op shooter/slasher department. right off the bat, it's very well optimized, with very crisp visuals, great animations (I can't tell if they're mocapped, but if they are, it's done very well) and a solid artstyle. it's most reminiscent of DRG's pseudo voxel based aesthetic, both in direct visual comparison and feel. gameplay wise, it's very similar to Helldivers 2. you load into a map, you have a set objective, with side objectives and even quests to complete strewn around the map. you complete the objective, defeat the boss, and extract asap. what separates this game from other extraction based PvE shooters is the lack of a hard time limit. as long as you don't defeat the boss, you can take as much time as you want to explore the entire map, find the various collectibles and complete all the side quests to progress your account at the completion of the mission. lastly, even though the game is still in early access, I can already tell there's a semblence of endgame progression via the prestige system, build variety and (proposed) cosmetic unlock progression. I feel like the only thing missing to really expand the build customization would be spell-exclusive jokers, but that's just my opinion. I'm really, really looking forward to seeing this game succeed, as it's already such a blast with or without friends, x10 more polished than most EA games in the modern world, and has a future proof gameplay loop that'll take really long to get bored of.

Let me preface by saying this, as a Deep Rock Galactic fanatic (1600+ hours), I REALLY like this game! I've put in 10+ hours 2 days in a row now. Hero Level 60 at the time of this review. This game has a lot going for it already, and I'm certain it will only improve over time. I'll list my 3 biggest complaints, or at least things I personally find a bit bothersome so far. (None of which are game breaking) (Excluding Deadeye enemy potency on account that they have already acknowledged this in their patch notes.) 1. I feel snake spawn frequency, and movement speed is more than a little overtuned, especially once you reach the Jungle map. I'd love to see either (A. Some sort of perk that wards off snake attacks) (B. A accessability setting to add outlines to enemies, i find that in the midst of chaos the snakes blend in a bit too much to the ground. Maybe allow an outline that has an adjustable boldness and vibrancy around all enemies for the visually impaired) I'm also already a bit tired of the animation that happens when throwing a snake off of yourself. 2. The sound the "Minigunner" enemy makes is actually the most obnoxious sound known to mankind, please make it stop for the love of all that is holy. I'll be in the thick of battle on Very Hard and I just hear a small nation of screaming skeletons drilling into my brain nonstop the whole mission. I understand the need to telegraph the sound cue of their attacks, but a less grating sound would be amazing. 3. This is the smallest of my complaints and is overall rather insignificant and def a lower priority. When a cactus gets hit with electricity, at a distance, I often mistake it at a glance for the collectable grave tombstones scattered around each map, Not sure what could be done to fix this, nor do I think it really hinders the experience in any meaningful way. I have submitted very few Steam reviews, but I see the magic here and only want the best for this game, and it's very talented dev team. *I also really love the minigames for mission objectives, and the attention to detail at the town and saloon hub* At this time, which is obviously very early, I would rate this game an overall 8.5 - Rod & Steed!!!

If you're a big fan of a Left 4 Dead horde shooter style of game with progression elements reminiscent of Payday 2, this game is a must buy. While team work isn't required it's recommended, at least for now. What are you getting out of this game? Wizard Robot Cowboys who are bounty hunters to take on occult beings to line their pockets with cash. It's pretty fun.
