Fear the Timeloop is a good Survival Horror that has too much to say and too few loops I’m an avid survival horror player, so I naturally really enjoyed my time with Fear the Timeloop, but I do have a few gripes with the game. Fear the Timeloop is a very good iteration on what Resident Evil 2 Remake did, and it’s kind of amazing how well it recreates that feeling and satisfying gameplay. Of course, there are some animation issues and not everything is as polished as the masterpiece made by Capcom, but I had a lot of fun exploring the hospital and got a few good scares and great moments. Weapons felt satisfying and enemies surprised me sometimes. As I said, it’s a good example of what a small group can make when taking inspiration from a great game and doing a solid job with it. You could also ask yourself: what does Fear the Timeloop have to offer? Is the timeloop a big deal? The answer is that it’s not that innovative and doesn’t really add that much to the formula, but I’ll be there for the next time TacoEaters releases another game. I’m sure they’ll get more creative as time passes. Do NOT Fear the Timeloop, actually Now that I’ve mentioned my praises, I have to talk about some hiccups. I feel the game needs a bit more polish here and there, especially when it comes to making it clearer what the game expects you to do in some boss fights, for example. There are also some bugs, but they weren’t a big issue specially since the devs are very active on the Steam forums. I mentioned some of my bugs to them and they fixed them in just a few hours, which is wonderful. They were also very fun and amicable during the process. Another issue I have with Fear the Timeloop is the loop that gives it its name, since I personally didn’t really get to engage with it. The hospital map layout, the health system (your health is actually a chronometer: if you take too much damage and/or run out of time, you’re dead), and some other elements are built to limit what you can do. The idea is to force you to replay sections, try different approaches, open different rooms, and use the knowledge acquired in previous loops to move forward. But that’s just the idea. In practice, I played the game healing myself every time I was low on health without any issue, so any kind of decision-making related to the loop was basically nonexistent for me. This raises some questions. Why is it called Fear the Timeloop in the first place when the loop is such a superficial and unnecessary element? I think there’s even a puzzle built around the loop that can be completed with very, very simple trial and error using the information from a single run. I feel FTT would work better as a simple survival horror without that mechanic, but hey, it’s really no big deal. You could even turn this around: FTT is so fun and compelling that even if one of its core pillars fails, it still stands as a solid videogame. Press “E” to say ENOUGH The thing that really lessened my enjoyment was the writing. Or was it the story itself? I’m not sure, this is a complicated matter and not something I usually dwell on too much. The initial premise is great: you want to know what’s going on and what it all means. But soon you notice that the characters vomit too much of their state of mind, feelings, and current sensations during dialogues, and it really threw me off. The constant screaming and lack of subtlety worsened what could have been a decent story. This made me think: how would FTT’s story fare with more toned-down dialogue like in other games? And what would I think of Silent Hill 2’s story if it were written like FTT’s? There are some dialogues in which Cooper, who is actually a complex and good character, just doesn’t stop talking, repeating the same ideas, and beating himself up over something that happened. It’s nonstop self-deprecation, and at some point I just wanted the dialogue to be over. I understood what he meant after about one third of it. If you’re interested, it’s the one that triggers as soon as you reach the third floor. Overall, I feel the game would have a stronger narrative and tone if the characters talked less and things were handled in a more subtle way. You know, the old “show, don’t tell”. Let the audience interpret your mysterious story instead of explaining everything outright. There definitely IS a good story and good characters here, but they’re surrounded by too much exposition and too many words. Just play it, it’s still very good That being said, everything else is very well made, and I think it’s impossible to make a game that looks, feels, and sounds better than FTT with such a small team. Seriously, the credits are just a few seconds long, and that surprised me. TacoEaters flew very high, maybe too close to the sun, but I really want to see how they land and what they do next!

Update 2: Thank you developer for being super active and responding to feedback so quickly! Looking forward to future updates. Update: After reaching chapter 7 I am switching my review to positive, not because the issues were fixed but because the game itself is actually very enjoyable. Unfortunately the time loop mechanic doesn't really do much beside make you have a slowly diminishing health bar that can take a few good hits depending on the enemy, no different from any other survival horror. One thing I think is a bit stupid is only being able to pick both rooms if you kick the bucket and loop but that is just me. I am playing on normal difficulty and ammo is in rather short supply early game but a lot larger late game. AI is one of the hardest things to do right in games and making sure enemy AI can properly path to a target can be challenging when taking into consideration so many colliders, with that being said the AI in this game is buns... Bosses specifically all just walk into a wall while starring at you trying to find a way to get to you. I recommend you make larger enemies able to ignore certain colliders like the flesh on the wall and branches/twigs. Besides that everything else is really well done just need to fix the bugs I listed in my original review below. I am going into this game with an indie developer in mind, with that being said this game is very very buggy and broken in just the first 30 minutes of gameplay. I find myself phasing through geometry and glitching out my player on colliders, my camera can easily clip through walls and jumps back and forth making gameplay nauseating. As well as my mouse cursor being visible when respawning, the player also makes no footstep sounds. Also please make the camera movement linear and not taper off. It is good for controller but not mouse. I will change my review to positive once these issues are addressed. Edit: Game crashed when I went into a new room... thankfully i just saved but still if that happened if i hadnt saved in a while I would be pissed.

TO NARROW THE DEFINITION A LOT TLDR TLDR If RE2 is one of your favorites, this is down your lane. I don't think I need to EXPLAIN myself to anyone; -if something excites me, I speak about it. -this is clearly RE2 inspired. -the DEV has taken a few risks, I shall elaborate, the game had a time mechanism that 'KILLS YOU IN 15 MINUTES IF YOU DO NOTHING' hence the name; FEAR THE TIMELOOP The massive risk the dev took was normalizing the game & creating a normal game mode WITHOUT THAT timeloop, & given a general campaign to play through. To just enjoy the game. This game is along the lines of games like - [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/1530470/Daymare_1994_Sandcastle/]Daymare 1994 Sandcastle - [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/842100/Daymare_1998/]Daymare 1998 - [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/1298140/Fobia__St_Dinfna_Hotel/]Fobia St. Dinfna Hotel of which all of the ABOVE are clear RE genre inspired. Things like INVENTORY management gameplay, general feeling so on. The price is outrageous. Even at full price. The dev has been rolling updates. It looks GREAT. The game currently has 36 achievements . The content on offer, just has me jittery optimistic. © Valve Corporation. All rights reserved. Like RE, here, there's video cassette's for saving and FILM's, though, on the matter of immersive feeling. When you log off from the game, THEN return, YOU LITERALLY WAKE UP, you see your avatar waking up, in the SAVING room. 'He slept, while you weren't playing, HE WAKES when you return'. AWESOME. Say-I had a request to be reviewed by DEV, it's this..... WELL, he IS updating so quickly, it's heading in such an excellent direction, I hope and trust. It's all good. Like the new update that changed the game SUBSTANTIALLY, and just 'GAVE' us the campaign mode. +++ RECOMMENDED

Sorry but the time loop feature ruined the game for me. I like to explore games like this but with the time loop, its making you rush through things. The game and story do seem good so far. I'll still give it a thumbs up
