Dec. 2025
The GOAT of the TRPG genre for many and one of my favorite games of all time. I've played War of the Lions and the original PS1 version as well. This version was a little controversial within the FFT community due to the removal of the added content from the War of the Lions version. The Good: +Voice acting is a tremendous addition to giving the narrative more life. The story was already considered one of the best of all time, but the voice acting takes it to another level. +Extra dialogue from party members makes the story a lot more cohesive. The weirdest part of the script from the older games was the fact that all characters added to your party essentially became silent, meaning you never really got to see characters like Agrias, Mustadio, Orlandeau, Meliadoul, contribute to the dialogue after recruiting them. The number of these additional lines isn't super crazy, but this is still one of the best changes in this version. +UI changes are generally good. Main one that I don't like as much is the removal of the Job Wheel, but this has essentially no impact on gameplay. +QoL/changes are welcomed: Being able to skip random encounters or force them at will, autosaving in the middle of fights to go back a few turns, being able to retry battles easily, leaving multi-stage battles. +Tactician Mode and Class Updates: I'm on the fence about these, as I like that they tried to implement these but the execution was a a bit off. The Bad: -Removal of War of The Lions content did infact hurt the game slightly. It's certainly a weird design choice given that War of The Lions was essentially a straight upgrade to the game in terms of content and all of those additions were removed. Many people complained about the removal of Dark Knight and Balthier, but I think the removal of all the extra equipment such as Tylnar Rouge and the additional battles/scenes was a much bigger loss. -Class updates were very mild. They did not really revolutionize any of the classes and a lot of the problems with most classes still exist: Why is Samurai MA scaling on abilities but revolves around a weapon that uses PA but is a worse PA class than every other class in the game and does not even innately have 2-hand even though every other PA class has an innate of their equip skill? Why is Geomancer also a PA class with MA scaling abilities? Archer is still just a charge bot, though a bit faster. I didn't find that the class changes affected my opinion of them very much. -Tactician Mode is harder, but at the end of the day is just a straight "you do less a lot less damage and take a lot more damage" with an additional caveat of friendly fire basically one shots your allies a lot of the time after the midgame. I think this was a lost opportunity to revamp the campaign in a lot of ways; FFT's campaign always had relatively minimal enemy variety compared to the classes available. You fight so many knights, archers, and black mages and it would have been a good chance to incorporate new classes into some of the campaign fights. Overall, it did an OK job of making the game not as much of an easy sweep in the later stages, but most of the strong strategies from before will still be strong, just with a few extra turns needed. This difficulty mode made gun damage feel painfully weak pretty much the entire game. -Deluxe version is a bit of a blueball. They added a cosmetic option as well as new items. But then the game itself offers no other cosmetic options or new items besides what is in the deluxe version (and those are ultimately inconsequential). It kinda goes against the philosophy of the devs saying they wanted this version to be true to the original PS1 version and therefore removed the additional content from WoTL. So new stuff is okay if they can add it as a microtransaction bundle, but no other new things? -It's a steep price tag for what is essentially a 27-year-old game that has less content than the version released 17 years ago. As much as I enjoyed the upsides of this version, I can't really find a good reason why this version needed to be released this way and for this price tag. In summary, I think anyone who likes TRPGs or great stories and hasn't played FFT before should definitely try this version at some point. For FFT veterans, the voice acting and additional dialogue will be nice, but you will lament the loss of WoTL content and Tactician mode will likely just be OK.

First, a few cons: 1. If you're an FFT veteran or just hate forced tutorials, this game unfortunately shoves several tutorials in your face upon starting a new game. (Fortunately, they're quick and to the point) 2. Luso, Balthier, the Dark Knight/Onion Knight classes, along with other WOTL content is mostly absent here. 3. Sadly, no multiplayer which feels like a seriously missed opportunity here. Now for the pros: 1. Improved UI and runs very smooth 2. Gameplay is much easier to learn, turn order and charge times for skills/spells is MUCH easier to read and plan around than it was in WOTL and the OG FFT. 3. Combat feels a lot more balanced and fair than it did in previous versions, as well as adding difficulty settings which further makes this game accessible to more new players who are not familiar with RTS or RPGs 4.The new voice acting is pretty good and makes the story more engaging, but you are given the option to auto play the scenes or simply skip (Which was thoughtful of the devs to add) 5. There are subtle improvements to the main story's writing that helps the story make a little more sense which is a very nice touch. Overall, this game is definitely an improvement in the story and gameplay departments, just a shame they didn't include much of WOTL's content or a multiplayer function, but the pros definitely outweighs the cons here if you're just here for a great single-player experience.

You do not know peak gameplay until you have 5 characters standing in a circle throwing rocks at one another to level. I've so missed this game. 10/10

Step back into the story of ambition, betrayal, and honor that defined a generation in this iconic RPG. Featuring fully voiced dialogue, enhanced graphics, and multiple gameplay improvements, players can lead their party in exhilarating encounters where strategic positioning and forward planning determine the outcome. Use the varied terrain of 3D battlefields to your advantage, skillfully manipulate the turn order, and victory will be yours for the taking! For those just beginning FFT, here are some essential tips and tricks to get you started Early Game 1. After the battle that includes Delita, recruit 3 Fighters that are Zodiac compatible with Ramza, with high Bravery for Physical Attack(PA) fighters and high Faith for Magical Attack(MA) fighters, and make EVERYBODY a Squire. 2. Set the top 2 abilities as Fundaments and Item, for EACH member. (Fundaments is Mettle for Ramza and Delita.) make sure everybody at least knows Potion, and it would be nice if at least 2 members knew Pheonix Down. 3. Grind until everybody has these skills: Stone, Focus, JP Boost, Move +1, and Counter Tackle. When i say grind, that means walk back and forth over Mandalia Plains and DO NOT GO FURTHER JUST YET. 4. As you grind, make sure to keep your potions stocked to at least 20 before each battle. 5. After everyone as a Squire has the above mentioned skills, switch your member with the highest Faith to Chemist. Grind until this Chemist learns Auto-Potion. Eventually you want everyone to learn this. 6. for the most part, you will be ready to branch out however you want. So here's the reasoning behind this.. once any member learns Focus and or Stone, then you gain the ability to farm JP for each action even if you don't swing at a monster, which synergizes with JP boost. Also, when Item is assigned as a Squire, then each member can heal themselves (and each other) while you are grinding without a Chemist. Zodiac Signs & Compatibility Each character has a fixed Zodiac sign. Each sign has "good" or "bad" compatibility with certain other signs (in some cases, the compatibility depends on the characters' genders). In short, having "good" compatibility with another character increases the damage you do, the HP restored by healing abilities, and the success rate of status magicks. Having "bad" compatibility does the reverse. Here is the Zodiac compatibility chart Fire signs: Aries ♈, Leo ♌, Sagittarius ♐ Earth signs: Taurus ♉, Virgo ♍, Capricorn ♑ Air signs: Gemini ♊, Libra ♎, Aquarius ♒ Water signs: Cancer ♋, Scorpio ♏, Pisces ♓ Signs in the same trinity = Good compatibility (×1.25). Signs in opposing trinities = Bad compatibility (×0.75). Same sign = Best/Worst depending on sex (×1.5 or ×0.5). Everything else = Neutral (×1.0). To make it simpler just keep Ramza as his default Capricorn and know that Taurus and Virgo are the two compatible signs with him. Recruiting Fighters Don't bother recruiting more than three Fighters. Due to how character progression works (which i will get into in a minute) i don't advise using a large number of characters in this game. There are a few story battles that allow you to fill up to five slots but most battles lock you off at four, so if you fill out the roster most of those characters will be sitting on the sidelines anyway and will lag behind on experience and job points. As a beginner it's best to just run with a team of four including Ramza, just let those four be your workhorses. You'll often be joined by guest characters who are controlled by the computer but you can also recruit special characters some of whom make cameos from other Final Fantasy games. Bravery and Faith Bravery and Faith are two really important statistics that each character has. A high Bravery increases a chance of a character using his or her Reaction Abilities and raises your attack power with certain kinds of weapons. A high Bravery is almost always a good thing to have! The only benefit to a low Bravery is that is improves your odds of finding good items with the Treasure Hunter ability, but even the "good" items are rarely worth picking up. Faith affects a character's affinity for magick. Having a high Faith stat makes your offensive magicks do more damage, your healing magicks restore more HP, and your status change magicks more likely to succeed. It also makes your allies' healing magicks more effective when used on you. BUT, it also makes enemy magicks more effective against you! You'll want your magick-users to have high Faith (so their magick is most effective), but you may want your other characters to have low Faith so they are less susceptible to enemy magicks. Genders Human characters in FF Tactics can be either male or female. Overall, the differences between genders are fairly small. However, men and women do differ in a few ways: Males have better Physical Attack growth and HP, making them better physical attackers, while females have better Magic Attack growth and MP, making them better mages. Additionally, females unlock the Dancer class, males unlock the Bard class, and certain unique equipment like the Ribbon is female-exclusive. Some Zodiac compatibility calculations depend on the gender of the characters involved with opposite genders of the same sign having extremely poor compatibility, while opposite genders of opposite signs have excellent compatibility. In addition, the Thief's Steal Heart and Balthier's Plunder Heart only work on characters of the opposite gender from the user. About Jobs FF Tactics is one of several Final Fantasy games that uses the Job System. Jobs are basically like character classes, except you can frequently switch them and combine their abilities. Abilities Each job has a category of Action Abilities (e.g. "Black Magicks" or "Steal"). This category of abilities is always available for use by the job. In addition, each job can equip one other job's Action Ability category. So, you can have a Knight who casts White Magicks, or a Monk who uses her own Martial Arts abilities plus the Thief's ability to steal Items. ======== In any case i hope this gives you more confidence as a new player. If you found this helpful, please like, share, and award. -peace

so ive played both the Ps1 version of FFT and the PSP version. while im disappointed that we dont have alot of the added things from WOFL, such as the dark knight class, this is a beautiful recreation of an already beautiful game. the voice acting while sometimes a little wonky, is a welcome addition. i do miss some of the old visual effects, like the old rotating class screen, but all in all this is a damn good rework worth checking out. your just as beautiful as the day i lost you. (which i didnt cus the OG version is siting in my ps3)
