The first thought in the back of my mind: "Why would I buy a game that looks so similar to the first game?" Of course, there are many parallels...but this is REALLY not the same as Genome Guardian 1!!! I am positive this will be a common point in the reviews... I genuinely enjoyed playing GG1 and I probably didn't even unlock more than half the content. From what I have seen so far I am truly impressed with. I really reeaaaally feel the effort and passion put into this game and I genuinely feel that it differentiates itself from GG1 so much that it is worth the purchase. The only critique of this game is that since the graphics (& effects) are better, I encounter more noticeable lag compared to GG1, but obviously that's my PC's problem (rtx2060 lmao)--and I know there will probably be many tweaks to the engine as we get to release (Keep up the great work !!!). I have recently heard of the sauce/spaghetti (style/substance) analogy. I feel like GG1 had the sauce, but not enough spaghetti. This game has a LOT of sauce, and a LOT of spaghetti. This is 1000% the best of both worlds. If you are on the fence, I think you will end up liking this game more than you expect!
It's Genome Guardian with even more stuff. If you played the first Genome Guardian, you already know that's a really good thing. If you haven't: this game is a roguelite wave survival game with a weapon fusion & upgrade system that gives you a million bajillion different options for powering up your weapons during a run, on top of a million bajillion different options for your character/perks/etc on a run-to-run basis. These options are substantial, some to the point of creating an entirely unique playstyle. If you like experimenting with different bonuses, mixing and matching stuff to see what happens and how strong you can get, you'll probably like this game. Also, the dev (solo dev, I think? forgive me if I'm wrong) presents information in-game in a way that's very candid and, at times, witty, which I really appreciate - I like when games kinda pull down the veil between the developer and player and talk to the player directly, makes it feel more... "human", I guess? Anyways, in summary, this is an excellent sequel to a game that was already excellent.
It's damn good. Simple as. If you liked genome guardian 1 but wished everything was hypermodular and able to be optimized to the nines, you'll love this. If you haven't played genome guardian 1, you might still like this, provided you like games that are extremely customization heavy and stimulating to the ADHD brain. I do think this game obsoletes the first one because it is strictly better in almost every way though, so if both GG1 and GG2 look interesting to you, I would buy both (to support the dev) but only actually play GG2. Still pretty menus heavy, not as parkour as I expected even with the addition of gadgets, new guardians, and with movement being more central to the gameplay loop (this comment is specifically for Alpherior cause I know he reads these. If you don't know what this means look it up) but that's fine, I think a lot of GG's merits come from it being a menus focused game. Bottom line is that Alpherior is consistent in his quality and this game is no exception. Definitely worth the play. 9/10.
Just love the insane combinations we have over the original Genome Guardian cant lie! Mixing and combining the weapons initially got me hooked to the original, but this game takes that freedom to the next level... Its just simply insane and the subtle animations in the UI does make the game feel more fluid in my opinion. Highly recommend :D
