It's Genome Guardian with even more stuff. If you played the first Genome Guardian, you already know that's a really good thing. If you haven't: this game is a roguelite wave survival game with a weapon fusion & upgrade system that gives you a million bajillion different options for powering up your weapons during a run, on top of a million bajillion different options for your character/perks/etc on a run-to-run basis. These options are substantial, some to the point of creating an entirely unique playstyle. If you like experimenting with different bonuses, mixing and matching stuff to see what happens and how strong you can get, you'll probably like this game. Also, the dev (solo dev, I think? forgive me if I'm wrong) presents information in-game in a way that's very candid and, at times, witty, which I really appreciate - I like when games kinda pull down the veil between the developer and player and talk to the player directly, makes it feel more... "human", I guess? Anyways, in summary, this is an excellent sequel to a game that was already excellent.

For those new to Genome Guardian, it's good, probably the best of its genre of turret/shmup defense in the center of a screen out there. I might wanna point you to the first game and read my review there if you're interested how. I also highly recommend trying 1 first simply because it's cheaper and offers its own unique experience, but if you wanted to start with 2 I'm not gonna stop you, both are outstanding! That said, I wanna focus this review primarily on those who played GG1 and want to know what the biggest difference between this and 1 is, and that is there's exponentially less guardians (aka characters), with the massive tradeoff that now all characters are extremely moddable, and the gimics of guardians from the past games are now basic attachments you can put onto any of the returning/new guardians. Example, some characters had the gimic of having 2 heavily moddable weapon slots, or 4 less moddable weapon slots. Now that gimic is sanctioned to "microchips" you can put on ANY guardian. Same goes with nozzles, you can slap a blunderbuss on there to make EVERY weapon a shotgun with less range, or gain the Bearclaw's signature triple fire. You can also mix and match microchips, nozzels, cores, hulls, etc to make whatever crazy combo you want, it's really interesting! If I were to give any big con to this system, and this is extremely petty mind you, but it's harder to make your turret look "cool", or exactly the way you want it to. Every single mod you put on your turret changes its appearance, and that's cool for streaming because people watching you play can tell what your build is just by looking at your rig, but there's also weird situations where there's a really good mod for your rig, but it looks completely ridiculous like "the cape" and you need to weigh if the benefit of being invulnerable for the first 10 seconds of combat is worth having this giant distracting thing on your back. In 1 every guardian had a unique shape, look, and color, and they all looked cool from the start, but once you got far enough in the game you can bedazzle them in however you want with silly accessories. Those silly accessories now are tangible game-altering modifiers, and sometimes if you want to be optimal or play the way you want, you gotta look like a clown (I know, rich coming from me). You can freely paint your rig (once you unlock the colors) and freely add patterns, so that's really nice, it just feels like there's a bit less "intentional flair" if that makes sense. Like, the Maw guardian used to be this BIG MOUTH that ate microbes, and now it's just "oh your round turret just walks into them and they get insta-digested, make up the mouth with your imagination". That sort of thing. Besides that there's also some Early Access jank, mostly just two things that were extremely apparent to me, but I'm sure it'll get smoothed over as updates roll out. I know the dev just perked their head up as their reading this so here's what I noticed so far -When playing the SHMUP mode my turret (had the starting wheels on) started violently snapping back to my mouse position (i think) and teleporting all over the place because of it. (this was the main thing) -game freezes up for a few second when an event starts I think that's all I gotta say for now! If something INCREDIBLE happens that addresses my cosmetic concerns, I will be sure to update, but if not again I'm really being petty, the new system is great and sets it apart in a way that does not make the first game irrelevant, just its own beast, and I think that's a great thing! I'm really excited to see how the game progresses, but it's already off to a great start <3

As of day one of early access, it's better than the first game in pretty much every way and straight up more fun! The only bugs I've encountered so far is certain challenges unlocking too early; otherwise zero glitches. My biggest worry is the developer updating the game every other day and overtuning the fun out of everything. DEVELOPER, PLEASE! let the game be goofy and let us be strong! Let the challenge come from harder difficulties! I'm also not a fan of the absolutely pointless meta-progression system these games often have. Why do I need to spend currency on an upgrade that lets me get more currency? And Why do I need to unlock stat upgrades at all? Some may say it's to pad out gameplay and give goals to work towards, but I unlocked all of the meta-stat upgrades in like 3 hours of gameplay; at best, it adds nothing to the game. The game DOES have new pieces of gear, both gameplay impacting and cosmetic to unlock, which is cool beans. Perfect for anyone who liked the first Genome Guardian, fans of bullet heavens, or tower defense games.

An excellent reimagining of the original Genome Guardian, improved in almost every form. Turrets are now fully customizable, as if they were split into constituent parts, visuals are enhanced, and the developer's overall skill in game design has evidently grown. If you haven't played GG1, this is a phenomenal synergy-based turret defence game with a shocking amount of interesting builds, exponentially more than even the original title.
