Like a highschool crush, you know they're not perfect, but they're just perfect enough in your heart to make you lose sleep What a bloody ride this was. I did not know about Grime 1 and just bought this because it was on special and looked very promising. This game is so freaking gas I love it! After 100% completion, I have to say that it's so perfect in its imperfection and I think the devs know this. The art style is gnarly, a bit of a mess, not pixel perfect, not tryhard. This game features, amongst other things: - Stunningly intuitive combat and navigation - Generous hitboxes and collision mechanics (for the player AND the environment 😂) - Obscenely fluid and addictive combat, I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised by this - The music in Starmire , HELLO?!?! So much longing and emotion, wtf?! - A surprising amount of weapons, armors and customization - Build flexibility in a metroidvania!!!?? - A weirdly and intriguingly philosophical story - No BS, just throwing straight hands - [...] and one of the most enjoyable aspects of all combat games: a parry that's not b%*^h-made that you can level and enhance. Nothing is un-parryable. It is crisp to a fault. Absolute *chef's kiss*. - For the completionists: if you enjoy exploration, 100% of achievements can be unlocked organically, without a guide, and in 1 playthrough. This is a godsend. Also, one thing I have to praise the dev team for: Usually, precision-platforming/parkouring in a metroidvania game feels like a punishment, a tedious task you have to get through in order to access the good stuff. But in Grime II, all parkour feels like a reward. I think this is due to the fact that all traversal abilities are so seamlessly integrated into the game's natural progression, and their evolution/upgrades make logical sense. All my applause for this part. Will definitely be following this studio more closely. Objectively maybe a 7.5/10, but a 11/10 in my heart!

The original Grime is my second favorite game of all time, only superseded by Elden Ring. I’ve played 100+ metroidvanias and soulslikes and it just NAILED everything. Atmosphere, combat, exploration, OST, platforming, enemy variety… all top notch. I’m mentioning this for context because I went into Grime 2 with some seriously high expectations. Somehow it has exceeded expectations and everything is an evolution of the first game. I haven’t been this hooked on a game in years and if it continues on this pace, it will be my game of the year without a doubt. Edit after completion: best MV of all time. I usually have lots of criticisms of games but runbacks being 10-15 seconds instead of <5 is literally the only thing I can complain about. It absolutely sets a new high bar for visuals, art direction, OST, combat, boss design, exploration, build diversity, and platforming. It is the absolute best I have seen in all of these aspects. The combat and platforming especially are the best I’ve ever experienced. If you’re a fan of the genre, please try it.

I will start this review off with an important statement: I VERY rarely write reviews for games. Grime 2 is honestly an under rated masterpiece. I am a huge fan of metroidvania games in general. I wouldn't completely compare this to a game like Hollow Knight or Silksong, but honestly it is VERY close to them. When you think of games in this genre, it is somewhat common for them to be uninspired, bland, or just copies of other titles. This is ABSOLUTELY not the case with Grime II. It has some of the most creative things I have seen compared to most other games in this field. I'll break down some things that really stood out to me (I will also include some negatives at the end). The World - Holy beautiful. There is so much variety in this game's world. There are quirky and fun characters, cute little guys you run into, amazing enemy diversity, beautiful scenery, vastly different design in the zones, many biomes to explore, fantastic connection between the world, and a fantastic sense of exploration. There was clearly a ton of love poured into this world that has been built for us to explore. The combat/movement/abilities - I won't go into any spoilers, but man, this game just does it differently. So many metroidvanias have done the same thing... "double jump, dash, wall jump" and it's not a horrible thing to have basic movement and abilities like that (they just work well), but there is something special about games that stray from the norm. Grime steps out of the norm with it's movement abilities in a pretty big way. This ties into how well the exploration feels with extremly satisfying platforming and exploration. Lacking a double jump and other movement also really allows combat to shine focusing on the grapple mechanic and parrying. I could say a lot more, but again, don't wanna soil stuff too much. Fantastic creativity from Clover Bite. The story - I'm not gonna say it's the best story in the world, and is slightly on the vague side (like many stories especially in this genre). I find myself not caring about the world and story in many games, but this game's atmosphere and characters really pulled me in. It starts off quite strong, and gives you a pleasant sense of mystery and intrigue. As stated before, the characters in this game are heavily varied. It was a cool mix of quirky, cute, dark, mysterious, and spooky vibes all mixed into one experience. THE NEGATIVES - not much honestly. There are a few wonky things such as the map not being perfect, some weird collision issues when platforming/respawning in weird spots, and animations not being perfect. Ultimately, the game starts off a little slow, and seems pretty basic if im being completely honest. Nothing is bad, but my experience with the game just got better and better. Everything mentioned above continued to grow, improve, and expand far past what I expected. If you get this game, and find yourself not super engaged at the start, I HEAVILY implore you to continue. The payoff is most definitely worth it. Thank you SO much to Clover Bite for making such a wonderful and passion filled project. If you are reading this, please for the love of god buy and play Grime.

Grime 1 is one of the most unique and beautiful (and to me best) metroidvanias of all time. This game seems to be very much its Silk Song. Atmosphere, art direction, mood, movement, and music are all stellar. Very excited to keep going. If you liked Grime, you'll almost certainly love this. If you haven't played Grime, try it now, now, NOW

First of all, in my opinion, the first Grime is a very underrated gem, which deserves much more attention. But the second chapter went further and added a lot of interesting mechanics, design ideas, cool enemies and bosses. Of course I need to finish the game to tell my final thoughts, but now the game is very satisfying so far.
