Played again after the Under New Management revamp. The game feels good to play, the parry works and doesn’t feel punishing. I appreciate their efforts in listening to player feedback and trying to improve the game.

A much better game after the “Under New Management” update. Combat feels more responsive and allows more aggressive styles of play. It’s still disappointing because of how the game was marketed as a “SWERY X SUDA” collab as Suda didn’t have much of a hand in making this. I came in expecting Suda’s Punk style to meet Swery’s eye for detail rich worlds. Instead it’s just a small stylish side-scrolling hack-n-slash with none of the strengths of these two’s writing. Felt like if Swery was trying to mimic Suda’s style to make this collaboration feel justified when I’d rather he play into his strengths and save the big collaboration marketing until they both have a heavy hand in the development. I mildly recommend this game, it’s not going to be for a lot of people but definitely not bad.

I thought it'll be abandoned as unfortunately many games from similar developers, leaving it broken and the final vision unfinished. I can very happily say this is not the case. Game had a constant stream of updates - although it took a while to fix the biggest issues, like the input delay, gameplay smoothness and weird mechanics like the parry. But it's finally there. The game is noticeably more forgiving compared to launch and that's a good thing, because what made it difficult at the beginning was mostly just frustration from how the character controls and moves. The good things are still good - the characters are interesting, the writing and especially the design are top. It also performs way better - it just ran like crap at start. They also expanded the options for different accessibility features. Now its finally a fun and very satisfying slashy slashy game.

I have played in solo, it is almost impossible to connect with anyone in co-op. I was expected this game since it was announced and I could tested it in the Tokyo Game Show, and I bought it immediately. But my first play was kind of awful: the game is really really hard even in easy, I couldn't pass through the second boss. But I kept trying and trying, I got some kind of frustrated... Then, they updated the game and, somehow, I beat the second boss... and everything changed, I could chain the bosses and stages quite easily, I enjoyed the game a lot, I couldn't stop play it. I have finished it twice, sadly I cannot find how to get all the secrets yet. The best: narrative, characters (also the bosses), the game design. A lot of good ideas contained in a small game. I love that it doesn't force you to play senseless through the game as others roguelikes, you do your stuff, you get your rewards. You want to get all the costumes (there's a lot of cool costumes)? Then you keep playing it. Every weapon feels different, that's good. Every stage also. The pinball is a good add, also the videos. I think that the price is fair for this content. The worst: trying to play on co-op, the first steps in the game are really awful, really hard to love it. Doing a Carnival Attack in the first hours is almost impossible.

Fully completed the game with all hearts, now in NG+ I have to say, at first I thought a lot of the reviews about the combat being janky were correct, but I actually highly disagree after playing for hours. The combat system is waaay more in depth than it seems. There are a generic set of Light Attack + Directional attacks that cover a lot of things that you can't get by just spamming the attack button. For example Down+Light is a very fast but short sweep if you need to attack something fast, or Up+Light is a launcher, so instead of just doing a basic committal attack string against someone, you can do the string into the launcher, which you can then jump cancel to get out of danger. Instead of running up to an enemy and pressing attack, you can hold forward and attack to do a gap closing attack to start your combo. That brings me to the other part of what makes the combat fluid and deep: A lot of specific moves and parts of strings are either dash cancelable or jump cancelable. I think a lot of people are ,again, just doing long attack strings and getting hit by other random enemies while they recover. You can do just a few hits into backdash cancel or jump cancel to stay safe, or a few hits into dashing forward through enemies to get behind a mob, etc. The last part of combat that I'd like to highlight is that by the nature of the game, you unlock bigger combo options and combat actions in general as you progress through the game and unlock your skill tree or power up weapons. The first few runs are intentionally kind of brutal, because by design it's a roguelite where you're supposed to die and try again, but there actually becomes a point where I think the game potentially becomes too easy. Luckily you get to choose difficulty per level, every time you enter one. By maybe 5 or 6 hours in, I was just zooming around levels comboing enemies without ever getting hit, and it felt great. Any complaints about weapon damage are just because people haven't leveled them up yet (which happens naturally through the game), I saw someone say pistols do no damage, but I could easily solo the game easily on normal mode with only my pistols right now. Aside from combat, the game is exactly what one would expect from a Swery+Suda51 game (which is awesome) My biggest complaint about the game, is that it's decently short for a $30 price tag. I finished all the extra content (as far as I know) in about 11 hours. There are still a bunch of challenges, a few unlocks, and some tough achievements that I can do, but I think the game could benefit from a few more levels. Maybe there are more secrets though, I can't be sure. Still overall, highly recommend the game!
