definition of a hidden gem! at first i thought: stiff movement, few options, no real inventory, but its so great.. the dark dungeons are rly "meaningful", u learn fast to proceed very careful bc of traps, enemys and labyrintish design.. great combat and metaprogression, not too easy; in the beginning u will die a lot.. take ur time and enjoy EDIT: its insane, how good the game gets after a few hours , trust me.. the upcoming progress, loot and biomes r just awesome! at the same time, the new encounters always stay deadly, its a nearly perfect balance (plus it keeps the feeling of a real adventure, bc no tutorial messages; u find out new stuff all by ur own) .. maybe one of the best of this type i have ever played (while at first i thought its simple/cheap)

I will give it a positive... but only just, and with major caveats. First, if on sale. Sadly it's not good enough for it's full price I feel. I recommend it mostly because of the atmosphere, somewhat the story and setting, and the idea of it is good, if not fully the execution. At the least, even though it was frusterating while playing it a lot of the time, it does leave a strong impression, and had me more involved and focused on it than many games. So overall I think the experience is posotive... Now, while the world is good, the atmosphere and vibes are nice, and it has some of that old school simple game minimal info feel I can like, and some nice boss designs and ideas, and overall had the potential to be frankly an amazing game... it did fall short in a few key areas. Namely performance, and gameplay. For performance, it doesn't even use a quarter of my CPU or GPU at any time, barely an RAM, however there are some hitches every so often, rare enough in general, but with the key issue of either save file updates, or UI notifications. Whenever I kill an enemy and pickup their souls/devotion/purple balls, it updates my total amount in the upper right corner. My game will hitch/freeze from a tenth of a second to a half a second from this happening, when fighting five enemies and having mini freezes (once they are over, all time insta progresses so you can get hit then, but your inputs during that time are ignored, or at best played at the very end of it). Not good... not a problem for most boss fights at least. Also happens when I unlock new items in the forge, again a UI pop up, again also something it might do a safe file update for being persistent progress, idk... There is by the way no real settings, no changing audio, option for graphics or saving or anything, nothing to tweak to try and fix problems really. Now, onto gameplay. First issue is no quitting mid run, it wont save progress, longer runs can easily be over an hour or more, so that's not fun if your run is going well, not dying, but run out of time and have to just quit and lose all the progress. You'll start back at the entry hub every time with no equipment or stuff beyond perma souls/forge unlocks and maybe shortcuts (but taking those limits your strength on those runs so... not always what you want to do). Next, is the bad collisions, lots of attacks from some big axe wielding guys that throw molotovs on fire at you (tiny bottle sized visual, hit as if they were as big as a car well before they touch you). Some big elites with spiky bony axe/sword things will, carying the weapons over their shoulder, ready for an attack and hurt you in front of them while they are still pulling the weapon back to prepare the attack before the actual swing, like the little pummel/grip slightly pivoting and being pulled away from you is the cuase maybe... lots of small issues like my starting weapons visual overlapping enemies yet not hitting, and later on found many more that do that, and a few that frankly hit well beyond their visual... Enemies are also kinda finicky though most don't have massive collisions several feet extra like those molotovs do at least. Next is design, while most enemies are, if you have the right equipment, well enough designed, bosses too, the AIso do tend to be willing to spam certain moves, or play without their own limits. Shield wielders might be easy to kill one time, or literally always insta block every attack you make for five minutes... only attacking when you start to pray at a nearby point. You can't smash through with heavies, they don't have stamina limits like you, even back attacks or most spells get bocked, it's basically a free invlun state with no real limits beyond not being triggered while in the middle of another move, and the AI sometimes doesn't do those. The final boss also has this issue. He has blade swings, once had him attack 14 times in a row, no break... I ran out of stamina (was max before then) and got hit. No real way to avoid that... Or his area denial orbs, he can cast that twice in a row, and basicaly make it so any dodge or movement gets you hurt since they double up on each side of you. And the first ones last long enough he can still get in attacks during tha ttime (not all shieldable, and dodging will now hurt so... gauranteed damage taken). His summon also doesn't limite its attack times/moves relative to his, so he can summon them and insta do a move you MUST dodge carefully and constantly and the summon just fires a random arrow in the middle to hit you... Most bosses I could and made a point to beat without taking a hit, not reliably possible on the final one sadly. Also had some dodge timing issues. Recorded after awhile to confirm, when three dodges in a row I was sure were good all got me hit. Yep, not sure exactly why, but sometimes attacks just don't match up, while in I frame dodge state at the same point his attack hits as other times it dodged, now I get kicked out of the dodge and take damage. Also at least one time I botched my dodge, and he didn't hit me when he obviously should have. Another issue is extra damage. Sometimes you take a hit, and it's two or three hits instead. Best example was a altar you bleed yourself at, take one damage, open a door.. I used it, had 3 health, insta died... Three other time son later runs using that same altar, only one health like it should be. Some enemy attacks also do that at random, not often, but over 12 plus hours of play, at least a dozen times I for sure noticed it, many other maybes... So ya, I do like the game, and think with polish it could be an amazing top notch game. But right now... It's just got a lot of frusteration and troubling issues in it, plenty of good, but also plenty of bad, and in these high risk time investment types of games, these issues just feel unfair and make you not enjoy them, so for now I have mixed thoughts. Normally, I'd not recommend a game with these issues, but again, for the atmosphere and feeling of the game, and when the gameplay does work (some great bosses here and stuff) I think it's worth it as an experience type of piece, when you don't have anything else you really want to play now, and its on sale.

I bought this game on an 80% sale but it is so good it is worth the full price. Really atmospheric, beautiful, dark fantasy done right. I enjoyed the descent and the increasing complexity of the Temple itself. The cast of characters you meet along the way are all unique and have a few fun dialogues.

If you just look aat the trailers you might think this is a soulslike, but it is a roguelike, and one that (at least for me) never gets tedious, it just has enough of everything and not too much or too little of anything, so you can spend a few hours with it and not end up frustrated or tired, overall a good and engaging experience. I will give you all the only review you will ever need of this game. Now, read carefully. It plays like a 2D souls game, yes. It feels clunky movement wise as opposed to majority of games that fits this genre, yes. Why should you play it? Why should you ever decide to experience this over other games in this genre? Well, the answer is surprisingly simple yet inherently complex. Devotion. Yes, Devotion. That energy, that vigor, stamina, willpower that makes us decide to move rather than to rot in bed. This game aims to touch this genre in a way no other game has done so in the past. It portrays you as a human, in fact a Templar woman, which has no apparent reason to have her quest towards the Temple besides the fact that her whole education and given purpose since her birth is to journey towards the temple. To find something there, or do something, or create something unbeknownst to her. Now, why do I know this if her character never utters a single word throughout the game? Devotion. This game has no mercy. You are in a dungeon/temple, yes, like almost all other 99% games in the genre, but there is something different, unsettling here. You are no one. Your being is nothing, you are fed the idea of your disposability as soon as you start interacting with other Templars. Your whole purpose of being born is to be there for some reason, yet your existence seems almost as a joke to life itself. You fall slightly too high, broken legs. You sit too long in a dark puddle which has apparent no means to harm you, lung infection. You block an attack with your shield you thought you could perfectly block, broken arm, blinded, sick, disease, bleeding, poisoned. Hell, you haven't prayed in a while? Your God does not like that! Get diseased heretic! You are well educated from every interaction and text you find throughout the journey on the Temple, the place in which your adventure resides, that the Temple It's alive. I'ts watching you, your every move step. Not in an exciting or encouraging manner, no, absolutely not. Everything desires to kill you, to get rid of you. You are seen as a parasite. Every boss seems able to get rid of you absurdly easy if you do not get what you are supposed to be doing. But then again, what are you supposed to be doing? You are supposed to have devotion. Faith. Faith towards your God. Your God is nowhere to be seen, and well It is kinda even harder to find if an archer just shot out your eyesight. Yet he is absolutely in every step of your journey. Your most valuable resource in this game, such as in life, is your faith. With faith you open doors (Literally, you open some hidden ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ doors by spending your faith), you open chests, you get rid of disease, you heal yourself, you get relics and such. Every time you put effort and instead of rushing the dungeon, rushing the enemies, getting hit by a trap you definitely already knew that was there yet you kept getting hit by it 3 or 4 times, your God sees it. When you walk the path as God gives you the inner strength to do so, you get rewarded. Didn't get hit a single time in a couple of dungeons in a consecutive manner? You now get a divine shield that makes you immune to the next hit. You killed already a bunch of undead dudes with the same sword? God saw it, now you strike harder with that sword. You died again, yet in that life you did an immense effort and accomplished a lot on the map? God saw it, he rewards you on your next attempt with improved vigor and strength. The mechanics could be improved? Make them more cool or neat? Yeah, absolutely, but isn't that the same situation as in life? Most people do not find the meaning behind works of art and the intention behind their artists, and what I find here is simple. Devotion. Reward for Devotion. Whether it be that your Devotion is inclined to beating the game, to killing any single thing that breaths on your path, to maintain your physical form alive, to get the shiny stuff and unlock even more shiny stuff (Yeah there is a lot of shiny cool stuff as the game goes on), or to do what you were hinted to do from the get go, reach your God, the source of your strength. I am not someone who enjoys spoiling details but, here is my advise. Pay attention to where you go. Pay attention to the noises, to the doors, to the interactions between the people you find, to the notes you find with messages and in between the lines hidden messages. There are many secret areas, secret doors which gives you insanely powerful stuff yet no one would thought at first glance to crouch there, to enter there, or to wait a couple more seconds there. In conclusion, this game has more to it than it seems. It touches many religious aspects of life, of evolving your perspective of what life is, what human society has done as history has evolved, which surprise surprise it's mostly evil. Yet, there is always hope. Hope to find something, something there, something no one told you directly that was your goal yet it has been your goal since the moment you were born. To find him. Even if your live is the price to pay for it. So, go on Templar. Have fun, pray, slay, get murdered, repeat until your Devotion towards your goal pays off. But, just remember. Noli umquam oblivisci quis sis neque unde veneris.
