To be honest, I had considered buying Kristala at release but the early reviews scared me off and at first I wrote off the game as yet another indie game loaded with bugs that would never be worth my time, but I kept seeing posts on Reddit about the devs pushing patches like crazy so I decided to come back and give it a chance, and I am really glad that I did because now I am hooked. While I’ve enjoyed pretty much everything about it so far from combat to jumping around and traversing the world like I would imagine any humanoid feline would, I actually think the part I’ve been most impressed with so far is the level design and interconnection of the world. I saw some people asking for a map but I’ve found the world extremely intuitive and easy to memorize, especially due to the clever shortcuts and interconnectivity of the world. It honestly reminds me in so many ways of Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne and has given me many of the same feelings I had when playing those games for the first time and falling in love with the genre. The cherry on top is the amazing voice acting. If you’re on the fence, give Kristala a chance. It’s in a much better state now after all the patches and I can tell the developers really care about their game.

Sigh. Where do I even start? I just finished the game and honestly, the overall concept is amazing. There’s so much potential here, which is what makes it even more disappointing that it failed to fully deliver on what it was trying to be. I lost count of how many lag spikes and random stutters I experienced throughout my playthrough. Enemies would randomly stand still or run in place, only to suddenly hit you with a red attack the moment you got close enough. Trying out different builds also became frustrating because half the time I was worried I’d fall through the ground mid spell, or have a boss freeze and unfreeze/teleport directly to me and one-shot me. And don’t even get me started on the hitboxes. Being behind or beside a boss while it’s attacking in another direction still somehow gets you killed because the slightest touch registers as a full hit. The frustrating part is that I genuinely wanted to see the good in this game. I wanted to enjoy it because underneath all the issues, there actually is a fun game here. The quests were interesting, the world and storyline kept me engaged, and the weapons and armor were genuinely enjoyable to experiment with. But the technical problems add up over time, and it makes it really hard for me to recommend this game to others in its current state. Honestly, I wish it had stayed in early access longer because right now it feels more like an unfinished project trying to present itself as a finished release. That said, if you’re someone with patience and can look past the issues, there’s definitely fun to be had here. Otherwise, I’d recommend waiting for more updates. I can absolutely see this game becoming something great. it’s just not at its best right now. Still, thank you to the developers for the work and passion put into this project. There’s clearly something special here, and I genuinely hope the team keeps pushing forward because this game has the potential to become something truly great over time.

[Update] Currently going through the full release, review will change. So far, there have been a few things i liked, but others that made the game quite tedious, in comparison to the EA version. My review after beating the game[EA release], while exploring basically everything there is, i mightve missed some things, but most likely nothing major. I did all the quests i encountered. First of all: The game is good, but too short, for almost 30$ especially since its nothing new that games in EA get abandoned left and right and you are just stuck with a shell of a game that couldve been great. Get it on a sale or wait for the full release. Playtime: I beat the game in about 6 hours on medium difficulty.(given its early access and i sure hope there is more to come) Gameplay: The combat is fairly basic, attack, dodge, deflect/block and cast spells. But dont get me wrong, it feels good! You can deflect with any weapon, which is certainly the best way to go about it, since its vital to most boss-fights. I played mainly with the claws, which mightve dragged some fights out, but allowed me to react more quickly. The spells are a bit odd, you basically choose the skills you will be able to learn by choosing your heritage. For me it was Ice spells. Some were pretty useless and others were making the game quite a bit easier. Spawning up to 5 ice spears underneath enemies within your lock-on range felt a bit broken at times, especially when you can just stagger the bosses out of their animations with this. Story: Hm, i have to be honest, i didnt pay too much attention to it, especially since there are about 2 chapters to the story at the moment. Side-quests: You get side-quests from npcs for areas just nearby, the ones you didnt just finish by exploring were solid. Some "side"-quests seemed mandatory to progress the game aswell. There arent that many though. NPCs: There are very few npcs you can interact with, all of them (apart from the merchants) seemed important to the story and showed up multiple times. The Cities are full with random characters, but you cant interact with 95% of them. Leveldesign: Its a Forest, ruins and caves. They dont feel bland, the devs definitely took their time to make them look unique and "alive". The map is also interconnected, which i found very pleasant. Weapons: There are 3 weapons: claws, greatsword and sword & shield. Magic can be used by anyone. Bugs i found: Getting stuck when my character auto.vaulted through a window that was closed, item descriptions of Talismans and key items just being the last item with an actual description and enemies in the last part of the current build spawning in and then just standing around until you attack them. Bosses: No re-used bosses, there are only about 7 of them. But they vary heavily in difficulty. The second-last boss was quite a bit easier than the 2nd and 3rd boss of the game. If you want a challenge, i definitely recommend the highest difficulty, even though some bosses can be hard to deal with on medium, most of the game is fairly easy. Character-design: It's cats, rats (+ their undead corpses), fishmen and mushrooms. Some bugs, slugs and abominations here and there aswell. The design was pretty neat, they didnt try to pander to a certain audience with it, just wish i could customize the character a bit more, would've liked to give my character the annoyed look of my own cat.

The game is admittedly rough but the premise is palettable and the combat reminds me partially of assassins creed with the stealth kills, especially the ones from above/jumps, paired with the fluidity of a souls-like combat the game flows smoothly all in all, haven´t noticed much lag outside of the first town, and also there are fair bit of typos (sorry I forgot to write them down so can´t mention them) in the text though that is a minute thing. voice acting isn´t the shabbiest though was fairly unexpected, pleasant surprise. combat is swift, responsive, fluid getting hit is punished quite hard on a lightly armored caster, especially in groups of enemies blocking drains health unless you parry for which the window is abit on the shorter side though not as short as some other souls likes with some patience and reflex honing it should not be too difficult to master, though be wary as some enemy hits can hit surprisingly hard, unsure if there are instability frames or something but I got one-tapped from 4/5ths of my health by a backhand from one of those bulky twin-knife rats, also beware of poison, its permanent unless you cleanse it using the bog grog so keep a plenty of that by your side whenever you can, don´t waste it. stealth kills are actually quite rewarding, seems like they guarantee one of the hidden favours which are recovery items, not as strong as your "estus" but still neat if you need to clinch a fight or want to remain just abit longer to learn a boss behaviour Visuals are a bit misty and bleak though that is expected from a dark fantasy setting, other than the overall shade of everything and the very slight samey-ness in the starting area, the thematic crystaline decor sparks up not only the surroundings but also questions, mostly about the lore of the world I can not deny I do wish to see more The game is painfully obviously unfinished though, the smith has/had "Test" text when I was scrolling through his options and vendors you talk to by literally telling them "Show me" and nothing else, which is one part funny one part game player moment. Platforming is a liiiittle bit clunky and buggy with fairly often clipping into the surroundings, mostly with the houses when you jump onto wooden beams and go inwards towards the house you can clip into the roof so some finesse is required, luckily you can usually walk out of the clip by simply walking along the beam away from the house. The game has quite a bit of potential overall, the characters are alright, games alright, platforming and combat is alright too, but it´s a rough ore yet to be smelted and refined, I´d score it at 6.5/10 as it is now, not bad, not yet great either, but has love and time put into it, keep up the good work, take your time to refine and polish and mainly, try to add what would feel the most fun to you dev/devs if you´re reading this, I´ll patiently wait for this to hopefully flourish into a sweet and intreaguing game.
