Definitely a great take on and spiritual successor to Pharaoh and other old city builders. A huge shame it is so underrated and underhyped/undermarketed...

It's a good game, especially if you liked Zeus and Pharaoh. What I like: the cities look good, the ambivalent music is also very decent considering that you'll be listening to it for dozens of hours, that's extremely important and they've done very well. It also improves on aspects of the old city-builders by allowing you set up custom routes for your peddlers to travel, adding or removing additional sellers. You really hate to return to old games and having to set up roadblocks or else your say food seller took the wrong route 2 times in a row and now your fartherest houses are destitute. They also added caravans to move goods between warehouses and you can add multiple drivers which again is extremely important without having to build the same service multiple times. I also really like the loading screen art and generally the aesthetics of the game, including the main menu are very well done. What I didn't like so far: the game is too mechanical. Getting things done is much quicker, which is awesome, but say in Pharaoh, in order to staff a firefighting office, you needed to send a recruiter to the houses and only then would the fire station begin work. It's small things like these that make the city more lively. Also, in older games when you click on citizens they would say funny lines or complain and the voice acting was great to really reflect how the citizens felt. It is small things like these that add flavor and make games way more memorable than just a good technical execution. Here they also say lines but they're just very basic like I'm carrying water or I'm transporting these goods, again, not memorable when I still play in my head the voice acting when someone was made homeless in Pharaoh, it's the intonation of the voice that really sells it. It's the same way that everyone remembers that in Warcraft 3 if you click your units quite a few times you also get funny lines, in some cases even a poem! I also would have appreciated if they added a voice narration to the briefing of the mission and ideally when you successfully complete it! Overall, I'm having a good time. I've only played a little bit and have not tried trading and possibly warring if that exists in the game but it's good. I strongly recommend giving this game the time of day and if there are any issues with the game later on, I'll update my review.

I grew up playing Pharaoh, Zeus, Emperor, and Caesar, so this game is like my childhood in the future. It's a solid game, and I hope it's not the last one from this studio.

So, played the old Impressions citybuilders and wondering if this is for you? You will likely enjoy this game if, in your experience: - As your cities scaled you found the warehouse controls woefully inadequate, wondering why you couldn't set up explicit routing between warehouses and granaries so you could get proper goods distributions - Once you understood the walker mechanic you were frustrated by the need to carefully build everything around it, invalidating what would otherwise be perfectly viable road layouts in real life, or things like large open plazas - In general you just felt the desire to be able to let your city run without the fear of the random number generator dealing you a bad roll - You liked seeing how efficient you could be with your space and your industries You may not however, if: - You felt like the warehouse controls were just fine and tweaking them wasn't one of the things you enjoyed doing - You saw the nondeterminism more as your city behaving organically - You enjoyed actually watching your monuments being constructed - The production chains and exploring them wasn't one of the game's highlights in your opinion In general I would describe this game as the result of someone playing Pharaoh and wondering why it was that they couldn't be more granular with their economy when they ran up against limitations with the goods transfer system between warehouses or the walker system. Granted, the ability to fine-tune these things in Nebuchadnezzar comes with, you know, actually having to specify how everything works, but personally I find it satisfying when you've got your space utilized properly and your houses well-supplied, and it's nice to just watch the city functioning. Being able to customize the monuments is a very nice touch, although I do wish there were a way to see them actually get built. The monument buildings themselves are pretty cool. There is a pretty wide variety of decorative roads, statues, and gardens you can use to enhance the look of your city and build custom plazas. I can see where some people might think the tutorial levels are a bit, uh, steep, although personally I didn't think they were too bad. Something of a fresh direction for the genre. Keep in mind when deciding whether or not to purchase that this steers heavily in the direction of a true logistics-focused game rather than the old model of a citybuilder built on RNG and partially-obscured mechanics. This comes with micromanagement that some may not enjoy, but for those who enjoy building and fine-tuning a production and distribution system against the backdrop of Mesopotamian cities, it's very enjoyable.
